Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Fire Rock Pale Ale is crisp, refreshing “Hawaiian-style” pale ale. Its signature copper color results from the unique blend of specialty roasted malts. The pronounced citrus-floral hop aroma comes from the liberal amounts of Galena, Cascade & Mt.Hood hops added to each brew.

Bleh. Memorial Day random beer. Reached into a cooler and pulled this out. It's lower in flavor. Light, crisp and easy drinking. I'd say a step up over macro and would probably be pretty refreshing in the Hawaiian heat.

Bright orange color. Mostly clear. Slight head and no lacing. Earthy, grainy, malty, woody aroma with minimal pine hops. Hops are slightly more assertive on the tongue but the earthy notes are prominent. Medium body and gritty texture. Far from my favorite pale ale but has a few redeeming qualities.

This beer is refreshing and not the most expensive craft brew out there by far. I have found it hard to come by except in the 12-pack seasonal sampler boxes. I would say with the lacing and the long-lasting head of the pour, it shows there can be some substance with this brew, even though there is somewhat a watery finish. It is very floral in the instant of a sip but in a small gulp there is the carbonation which is going to bring out the hops bitterness. This is a balanced brew with very good hop signature.

From Hawaii!!
No. Not really. Well, maybe if you're in Hawaii. But, I'm in New England, so that means it (probably) came from Redhook, Portsmouth, NH...which is fine, I guess.
From a mix pack bottle, into a flare, on a 90℉ day, at the pool, in the middle of May.
This beer is perfect for a hot, lazy, Summer's day, whether you're at the pool, or the lake, or the ocean. As a matter of fact, Fire Rock is the best of the variety.
Although I prefer to drink from a glass, this is the kind of beer that could easily be enjoyed straight from the bottle. And, it stands on it's own, just fine, but also compliments any meal that could be cooked on the grill. And, we liked being able to switch gears throughout the day, between the four offerings in the box, all of which worked well, together.

This was a pleasant surprise.
Look - Pours a slightly hazy copper color, a short off white head, a few patches of lacing.
Aroma - Subtle citrus, toast, grainy, earl grey tea.
Taste - Starts out with a deep mellow and oily hop flavor, really not as much citrus as in the aroma, hops seem more earthy and resinous to me, there's a faint fruitiness here that is equal parts tangy and sweet, really nice. Malt comes in with a very light toffee, bread crust and subtle sweetness. Aftertaste has that lingering earthy/floral hop note. Bitterness is kept in check. Balanced.
Feel - Medium bodied, creamy but crisp carbonation.

Overall - Didn't know what to expect from this. The aroma screamed basic American pale ale to me but the flavor was much more unique and balanced. Nicely done.

Bottle dated Sept. 14, 2016! DFH Tulip.

A: pours a slightly hazy orange copper with loads of carbonation and 1 finger bright white head.

S: pretty dull, as you'd expect at this age. Some faint malt, but really a whole lot of nothing.

T: mild, slightly citrusy arrival, turning to a lightly bready malt with some grassy bitterness.

M: lighter end of mid-bodied and very well carbonated.

O: a refreshing classic American pale ale, deadened by my ignorance in buying such an old bottle. Should give it a second go round some other time.

A pale ale brewed with roasted malts, what a good concept. Pours a beautiful gold-copper color with a loud healthy off white head that makes a lot of fizz noises. A constant flow of tiny bubbles rise from the bottom of my glass even as the head fades leaving traces of lacing on the glass. Has a fantastic bouquet of hop and malt. Outstanding, refreshing taste of a hoppy pale ale slathered in malt with just enough bitterness. Very good! Overall, Fire Rock is an outstanding beer that goes down easy! I'd say its one of Kona Brewing's best brews. Outstanding work Kona!
