A fair porter. The toasted coconut flavor is quite nice, but the general maltiness I've enjoyed in better brown ales is missing. Also slightly thin, a little dry, leaves an uncomfortable film on the mouth. It's fine, but nothing I would drink repeatedly.

The beer comes in an amber brown to brown color.

The aroma offers freshly toasted coconut, nutty and toasted malts, hints of chocolate.

The flavor follows with a touch of that toasted coconut note, but then transitions to toasted malt flavors, hearty toasted whole grain bread, toasted bread crust, hints of chocolate roast, onto a moderate earthy hop bitterness.

bought this at Krogers - just because I liked the idea of coconut beer

a just a tad lighter than cola - about 1.5 fingers of head clear but dark

s
nondecript really - not much to the nose - just a bit of maltiness

t about the same - sorry but I dont discern and coconut at all. slightly sweet - no hopiness

On tap at Swillburger/The Playhouse in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a light mostly clear brown, with a small off-white head, and a bit of lacing.

Smells like faintly sweet toasted coconut, a bit of sugary caramel, and not much else.

I wish this was more full flavored, not only in the coconut department, but also in the everything else department. It's certainly drinkable and tasty but absolutely not anything to write home about. It's got a vague sweetness, with not enough coconut to carry the weak base beer. I'm left hoping for a bit more malt backbone.

This is light bodied, just a bit watery, with a normal level of carbonation.

This is wanting in many ways. I still enjoyed it, but I'd hardly recommend it to anybody.

The beer pours out into a Duvel glass a nice dark brown color with a 1/2" light tan, almost ivory colored head that soon begins to recede leave some signs of lacing on the sides of the glass. Sipping creates a couple of arches of lacing with a few specks here and there as well as some legs of lacing. By mid way through the beer the ring is quite smal, there is only an island of foam on the liquid and sipping leaves fewer and more scattered small spots of lacing.

The aromas include the toasted malt and some coconut. (No surprise there... :-))

The flavors are dominated by the coconut with some toasted malt sweetness that seems a bit like dark caramel.

The mouth feel is on the light side of medium bodied and smooth with some very light but persistent carbonation. The finish begins as the coconut recedes to leave the toasted malt and dark caramel sweetness forward. They then begin to recede revealing a light touch of bitterness as the whole package disappears into light dryness.

On the whole I thought this was a reasonably good beer that I'd be willing to have again. But it's not something I'll be seeking out on purpose, in part because of the strong role played by the coconut.

thanks to my brother for sharing this, enjoyed in a 1/2 pint from the bottle.

The color is dark brown almost black with thin beige head. The smell is malty with a slight coconut/nutty smell with mild sweet aroma of malt. The smell leads to a sort of roasty yet slightly oily nutty texture with moderate carbonation and semi-dry finish.

The taste is decent with slight malt roastiness and subtle coconut in the back with slight sweetness in the back and low yeast flavor, almost no hop flavor pretty clean in general with sort of a toasted grain quality. The coconut is there but very mild. This is an okay brown ale but the coconut is not forward enough in the taste to make it stand out -good but not really a standout

Koko Brown is one of the first beers I ever tasted.
Time to revisit and review.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a medium mahogany brown. Clear as can be. Head settles and is all but gone.
Smells faintly of coconut, but little else. A little sweet Twinkie cake aroma.
There is a Twinkie cake sweet taste that doesn't last, followed by toasty nuttiness. A toasty taste lingers and some alcohol shows up at the end. A coconut taste comes and goes, but is subtle.
A light, thin body with some carbonation bite.

Overall a fun easy drink, but it lacks the complexity and body to be a stand out.

Pours - Dark mahogany brown not much head very quickly dissipates decent lacing heads goes away nothing left.

Smell - Light coconut and chocolate smell along with some roasted malts.

Taste - I am not really getting any coconut, reading other reviews most are. i am wondering if it is due to the fact that my bottle is 4 months old? Not sure but I do get some chocolate little bit of spice and roasted malts.

Feel - well carbonated light feel kind of thin.

Overall - I was expecting more coconut but again I may have to find a fresher bottle and try this again.

A: Pours a dark ruby/mahogany color with a fingers worth of head that fades down to a tiny cap

S: Lots of sweet coconut up front along with a light toasted malt note and some very light fruitiness

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the sweet coconut and light toasted malts and then goes into some light fruit notes that accompany the coconut. Finishes with lingering coconut and light sweetness

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: A solid brown ale with a huge focus on the toasted coconut. Very easy to drink. One to try out if you're a fan of coconut

Kona Brewing Co. "Koko Brown"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, coded "15:16 3 DEC 14 15" - I'll assume that's a packaging date

Notes: I had to check the label to see if this was brewed with coconut because it has such a nice coconut aroma and flavor, and it does! Toasted coconut. Nice! (Please read as: I'm an idiot). Beyond that it's mildly chocolatey, like milk chocolate, toasty, nutty, and nicely balanced towards sweetness. There are some grassy and herbal hop flavors in the background, but they don't really compete with the malt and coconut that sit upfront. I was expecting more of a straightforward brown ale, not so much of a dessert beer, but it's pleasant and I could certainly see keeping this on-hand for a variety of situations although I'd imagine I'd tire of it as a regular pint. I haven't tried it yet, but I imagine it'd go really well with some smoky and spicy grilled shrimp.

Bought a single bottle to try. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a pint glass on 3/3/16.

Brew pours a clear mahogany in color with close to a 2-finger beige head that didn't last long. Some lacing was seen when sipped. Aroma is what would be expect with roasted malts, cocoa powder with a hint of coconut. Taste pretty much follows the nose. Very pleasant to drink. Lighter-side of medium-bodied with decent carbonation. Overall really enjoyed this one.

Poured hard at 45°F from a 12oz bottle (bottled on 12Dec15) into a Mikasa Ale glass. Consumed on 09Mar16.
LOOK: Pours with three fingers worth of dense, khaki foam. At 1 minute and 15 seconds, the foam head becomes porous and rocky. At 3 minutes and 30 seconds, the head has finally faded into a quarter fingers worth of off-white foam. Brown in color with a copper tint. Rising bubbles are both small and medium in size and very subtle in quantity. Lacing is thick and moderate.
SMELL: Mild aromas of sweet chocolate, tree nuts, grass, toasted coconut, toffee, and toast are backed by subtle spicy and floral hop aromas.
TASTE: Strong flavors of toasted coconut and mild grass flavors first strike the palate. Mild toffee and subtle sweet chocolate and tree but flavors immediately follow as coconut flavors fade to mild. Mild flavors of toast, floral hops, and spicy hops enter lastly as all previous flavors persist.
FEEL: Light-bodied with hints of carbonation. Goes down smooth. Ends with a thirst-quenching finish.

This brew is a clear, dark brown color with a think white head. The aroma is richly malty, with sweet undertone. The taste is balanced, with some chocolate notes, almond, walnut, and biscuit. The finish retains malt, but isn't overly sweet. Full in body, and nicely drinkable

Bottled December 22, 2015 and enjoyed in a stemless win glass February 19, 2016.

Look - Reddish light brown. Thin medium bubbled white head. Blotchy lacing.

Smelll - Traditional ale. Vanilla. Coconut. Malt. Chocolate.

Taste - First sip was very old fashioned ale. Continued sips were vanilla, chocolate, nut, spice, and chocolate. Don't forget coconut.

Feel - Watery. Not overly carbonated.

Overall - Good flavor for what it is. I could even go as far as saying complex. Coconut and chocolate.

I have to admit, the Coconut on the label got me.

Koko pours a light walnut brown, forming into a chestnut color in the glass. Head is short but sticks around. Hilly lace which I like.

Aroma is typical of nut browns...roast malt, nuts, with a touch of plant and sod. No coconut so far.

Flavor is pretty good, with notes of coffee, chocolate milk, and coconut. This is mixed in with sod, citrus peels and cacao nibs. There's a dirty bitterness behind it though, which I'm not too fond of. It's okay.

Feel is starchy and carbonated, leaving a semi-dry feel on the end.

Overall Koko is one of the better Brown ales I've had, but it still has that metallic diarrhea smell and the dirty bitterness that browns are known for. Regardless, I had to try it. The coconut is in there, but it's washed away quickly.

For what it is, this is a tastey ale. Dark caramel with hints of coconut. A real winter warmer with liquid aloha island freshness. Bottled on DEC 23 2015 from Naples bottle shop.

12 oz. bottle - Bottled on Dec 30 15:

Pours brown with a thin tan lasting head. Spotted trailing lace sticks.

The smell is of coconut oil, toast (slightly burnt), hint of toffee/chocolate.

The taste is of sweet coconut. A mild brown ale mixes in - toffee, nuts, hint of chocolate. Faint touch of earthy hops keep sweetness restrained. Soft, sweet finish.

A thin brown ale. Not much to the body. It is fairly smooth though.

Aftertaste comes close to reminding me of suntan lotion. Anyway, it's an interesting, unique brew. Coconut certainly noticeable, but not overwhelming. The brown ale itself is decent, at best. One and move on, for me...

Poured into a Lagunitas largemouth glass.

The first thing I noticed when I poured the beer into the glass was the extremely loud noise coming from the fizzy head. It sounded exactly like a soda pop fizz, and sure enough the head receded as quickly as a soda pop's fizz. The beer is a ruby dark brown in the glass and it does look like a soda. The aroma smelled better out of the bottle before I poured it than it does in the glass. Toasted coconut notes, yes. But it also smells like a cheap coconut cookie you'd find in one of those cookie tins around Christmas time. Cheap. The beer tastes sweet and nutty up front, not without a noticeable coconut flavor. There is a bitter tanginess in the finish. The mouthfeel is thin, watery, and carbonated.

Overall, disappointing and cheap tasting.

I believe this beer is a touch under rated compared to the BA score..it's on point not perfect but very good..smells like coconut and other typical stout aromas ,touch of coffee touch of chocolate..and the taste is right there along with its specially as it warms up the coconut shines more which is a good thing cuz if you don't Ike coconut you shouldn't buy this beer...a better mouthfeel would take this beer to next level..as it is a B+ in my book

Sweet brown ale with hints of chocolate. Clear dark brown body with small beige head, aroma of chocolate, molasses and a hint of coffee. Taste is sweet, more chocolaty as it warms up. A little on the sweet side, but not too bad.

Hearty look for a brown ale, ventures into porter territory. Almost an inch of head, tan in color. Aroma was brown malt, coconut stayed obscure. A little bit of chocolate.

Taste, mild sweetness, smooth, lacks bitterness. Still wanting in the coconut department. Could use more adjuncts. How about that?
