Very Good
Castaway IPACastaway IPA
Notes: A full-bodied, American-Style I.P.A. that is bronze in color, Castaway IPA is "dry hopped" (aged with liberal amounts of whole hop flowers after fermentation) for assertive hop flavor and aroma. The bitterness is balanced by the malty body of the beer.

Looks, pours, feels good. My problem with this is that it doesn't have much of a taste, certainly not what I would expect of an IPA. For what it's worth, I drank it in mid-February 2019; the date on the bottle is early December 2018.

On tap in the Honolulu Airport. Looks like ipa , smells and tastes like a middle of the road ipa. Will do if you are not too particular and there aren’t any other choices.

On tap at Moose McGillycuddy's

A: Pours golden amber with a frothy off white head that settles to a thin layer and laces nicely.

S: Spicy pine, citrus, fruity notes, bready malt, and caramel sweetness.

T: Resinous pine, fruity, tropical, peach, mango, citrus, grapefruit, lemon, light spicy herbal notes, bready malt, and almost toffee sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: Serviceable IPA, but there are better available on the islands.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a clear mug.

Appearance: light golden hue with a touch of haze and a light effervescence. Head is two fingers of creamy eggshell foam. Quite nice, in my book.

Smell: a little bit of sweet malt with a fruity, tropical hop character. This is among my favorite hop aromas, so I'm rather smitten with this beer.

Taste: sweet malt with those same tropical hops from the aroma. I really dig this beer.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a decent carbonation and an OK creaminess for the style. Not bad, but not the best thing in the world.

Overall: OK, so the texture's nothing to write home about, but the flavors are right in my butter zone. Great stuff.

An incredibly solid IPA, with strong and pure hops flavors. This is one of those west-coast style IPAs (Hawaii is about as west-coast as it gets), which ignores any touches of citrus and pine, and gets right to the point. Fantastic.

I picked up this brew as part of a mix-pack from a local store, mainly because of an upcoming trip to Hawaii. The beer is an exceedingly pale, straw color. The head is slim, and quickly fades. The smell is a pleasant mix of resiny hops and soft malt, with some flowery sweetness as well. The taste is fairly balanced, if not slightly dry, and the bitterness is lighter than expected for an IPA. Nice, but not exceptional, brew.

I was over at The Fridge earlier today and I acquired a few more bottles, this being among them. I was going to hold this in abeyance until a little while ago, when I got word that a dear friend, former shipmate and fellow member of the USS Normandy's SDBG passed away. Ken Longshore and I had just met up at a 25-year reunion a couple of weekends ago and like me, he was a hophead. I raise this AIPA (and all subsequent ones) in his memory!

From the bottle: "Since 1994, Kona Brewing Co. has been committed to making handcrafted ales and lagers of uncompromised quality."; "We invite you to visit our brewery and pubs whenever you visit Hawaii. Mahalo!"; "Fresh, Responsible, Always Aloha"; "Set Sail for Adventure! Hawaiians crossing the channel between Oahu and Molokai face a perilous journey. Our Castaway IPA is inspired by these brave island explorers. A smooth yet spirited brew, it's as refreshing as the wind in your face when you set sail for adventure."

I was pressed for time and so I used a heavy-handed pour to get things started. Following a quick mini pseudo-cascade, I was left with two dense fingers of bone-white head with excellent retention. Color was Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a tropical fruit hoppiness, fitting for this company and including notes of pineapple, mango and guava. As the head finally fell, I was left with lots of nice, sticky lacing. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was fruity, but kind of bland at the same time. I do not know how to precisely quantify it, but it just seemed to be lacking any Ooomph! It was passable as far as the style is concerned, but there are so many better examples that this one pales in comparison. Finish was slightly bitter, kind of fruity, but just lacking in depth and cohesiveness.

Tasted in a Spiegelau IPA glass from a 12 oz bottle on April 1, 2016. Look is bronze with a thin head and little lacing. Smell is citrus, pine, honey and sweet malt aromas. Taste is sweet mango, bitter citrus, pine resin and sticky sweet malt flavors. Feel is medium to full in body with a bitter finish.

Castaway IPA | Kona Brewing Co. Poured from the bottle into a glass, this brew's head is two fingers thick, with laterl lacing, and a hazy golden body.

Smells like fairly light hop notes and and "biscuit" malts.

I taste a well-established biscuit/cracker malt backbone among tamer citrus and "tropical" hop notes. I'll have to agree with @Kendo that this is coming off as more as a session IPA or just an APA, rather.

The mouthfeel here is medium-light with mild carbonation.

I'll give Castaway IPA | Kona Brewing Co. an overall rating of a 4.25. Again, nothing that will wow, but it goes down perfect;y on a stifling day.

I'll preface this review by saying that I am not a huge IPA fan [yet...but I'm working on it!]. But, I'll try and judge this in the style.

I had this at Kona's Hawaii Kai restaurant.

The appearance is golden with slight a slightly reddish hue. Decent head.

The smell is hops, which you would expect from an IPA. Taste of malt with some spiciness. Of course, the hops then take over and hit pretty strong.
Quite cleansing on the palate. Fit very nice with the spicy food I was eating.
Overall, a decent IPA, but not something I would stick with [see preface]. But, for hopheads, this might seem better than it did for me.

9/06 Just got back from another visit to the brewpub. Tried this again and liked it much better than my previous visit. Thought it was very drinkable. Perfect for the food they were serving [pizza, sandwhiches]. Didn't seem as hoppy as my first review. Strange, but seems like a completely different beer. Anyway, the ratings have gone up across the board.
