Castaway IPA | Kona Brewing Co. Poured from the bottle into a glass, this brew's head is two fingers thick, with laterl lacing, and a hazy golden body.

Smells like fairly light hop notes and and "biscuit" malts.

I taste a well-established biscuit/cracker malt backbone among tamer citrus and "tropical" hop notes. I'll have to agree with @Kendo that this is coming off as more as a session IPA or just an APA, rather.

The mouthfeel here is medium-light with mild carbonation.

I'll give Castaway IPA | Kona Brewing Co. an overall rating of a 4.25. Again, nothing that will wow, but it goes down perfect;y on a stifling day.

A: Poured from the bottle into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. Body is clear golden- orangey with a half-finger of whitish head on top, which settles to leave a little bit of lace.

S: Some honey-sweet malt, florally hops and citrus peel bitterness, with a touch of cat pee.

T: Overall impression: light. Wee bit of crackery malt foundation is followed by citrus - some grapefruit, lime zest and lemon. Finishes fairly clean, with a lingering hint of lemony bitterness.

M: Light-to-medium in heft with pretty active carbonation which is not at all sharp or offensive, but rather ticklish on the palate - in a good way.

O: OK. Drinks more like a Session IPA than a straight IPA, and in some ways more like an APA than any sort of IPA.

Golden, slightly hazy color
Medium-light mouth feel

Slightly sweet taste, slightly bitter from hops, floral presence
Overall a great beer to drink a lot of on a hot day.

On tap at Marriott Ko Olina in a plastic 20oz snifter. I'm diggin this more than the pale ale I had earlier. It goes down just fine with the bad ass view of the lagoons and the sound of waves hitting the rocks. I'll have a few more of these before I leave, even if they are super taxed at $9 each

look: 3 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 3 | overall: 4

Appearance: Dark golden, not much head, some lacing.

Aroma: Herbal and floral hop with a subtle malt base.

Taste: Grassy, flowery hops that don't tip into overly bitter. Maybe a slight hint of citrus (lemon). There's subtle malt, but it takes a back seat.

Feel: Medium-bodied, moderate carbonation. Sticks around in the mouth a bit, but not like syrup.

Overall: This is one of my go-to IPAs (my preferred style). It's not overbearing, goes well with a lot of foods and the ABV isn't so high that I can't have more than one.

From a. 12 oz bottle.
Good, typical appearance. Low hop and high malt/hop balance in the aroma but the flavor is hop dominated. Nonetheless, bready malts come out again I the aftertaste.
Moderately bitter.

One of my favorites from Kona Brewing. This is a tasty IPA that doesn't overdo the hops or alcohol. Worth seeking out and grabbing a few. Liquid aloha.

look: 3.75 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Nice gold color, decent white cap and lacing.

Aroma: Floral, melon, some earthiness, hint of pineapple, conifer, no apparent malt.

Taste: "Assertive hop flavor and aroma" is how the brewer describes this brew and that's correct. Hops front, middle and finish, a conifer hop bitterness in the aftertaste. It seems to start with floral hops and build to finish with stronger hop tones. Malt is present in the body but contributes little to the taste.

Good body and full feel, nice actually.

Overall: It will run a close race with other IPAs but not outpace the others. Nice enough but really just another hoppy pale malt. Of course, it is an IPA and will put a bitter beer face on a willing accomplice who promptly went back to her Coors Light.

Got this at the AH.

From a bottle into a snifter
Best before 26 January 2017

APPEARANCE: Pours a 1+ finger, medium looking, fluffy, bright white head with great retention. Perfectly clear amber in color with lower levels of carbonation. Maybe a bit too clear for the style. Head slowly fades to a full wispy cap and clings to the glass. Splotchy wisp remains leaving lots of clingy lacing down the glass as it empties. Love the head and lacing, but the body is a bit too clear for my liking.

SMELL: Pale malts, caramel, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and a bit of pineapple. Citrus aromas with lemon as well. Bold and very fruity.

TASTE: Pale malts, caramel, honeydew melon and some floral notes up front. Bitterness at the swallow with caramel, toffee notes, melon and hints of pineapple lingering on the palate. Lots of floral bitterness and grassy flavors linger and linger. Bold and plenty bitter.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Very creamy and crisp on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly dry. Plenty of bitterness lingers.

OVERALL: Good stuff. The look is very, very clear, which is a little weird for the style maybe, but the feel is great and the rest of the package is good as well. The flavor might not meet the citrus and fruity tones that the nose had advertised, but it's still enjoyable.

35cl bottle. Clear pale yellow with a white head. Smells of lime, overripe mango, pineapple and honey. Tastes pretty much the same way, with a generic herbal bitterness thrown into the mix. Soft mouthfeel, yet kind of dry.

Tasted in a Spiegelau IPA glass from a 12 oz bottle on April 1, 2016. Look is bronze with a thin head and little lacing. Smell is citrus, pine, honey and sweet malt aromas. Taste is sweet mango, bitter citrus, pine resin and sticky sweet malt flavors. Feel is medium to full in body with a bitter finish.

Fairly weak for an IPA, but not bad. Pours a slightly hazy gold with a quickly dissipating white foam head. Slight evergreen hops aroma, not sweet citrus or fruit. Some bitter hops aftertaste, but not much. Not a bad beer, but not very distinct as an IPA.

Poured into a nonic pint glass.

Look: Clear golden body with a huge rocky light cream colored head. Great head retention, large bands of foamy lacing.

Aroma: Spicy hops and lots of citrus and faint sweet fruits like mango.

Taste: A good balance of spicy hops, cedar wood, and citrus bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, dry.

Overall: More spicy than fruity, but pretty easy to drink.

Had at Polynesian Resort on draft at WDW. After a long day in the park it hit the spot. Nice Amber appearance. Taste was hoppy (not overly) and bitter which stayed on the tongue. Not the hoppiest, most flavorful or smoothest IPA I've ever had, but I've also had a lot worse.

Bottle dated 11-3-15. Pours a medium amber-gold with a lasting off-white head. Initial impression is ccitrus and pine, nicely balanced by malt biscuit. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation - very refreshing. Slightly bitter, dry finish. Pretty good example of an AIPA - not a hop bomb. Very enjoyable.

Appearance: Hazy golden yellow that pours a quickly dissipating 1 finger head. No lacing.
Smell: Citrus and subtle pine hops. Nice malt foundation. Some nice pineapple notes and grassy/earth notes as well.
Taste: Balanced malt and hop front that cascades nicely to a citrus hop finish. Notes of pineapple citrus and earthy grass notes in the after taste. Very nice finish
Feel: Medium body and carbonation. Crisp finish.
Overall: Solid, flavorful IPA. It brings more earthy notes than the other IPAs, but is very enjoyable.

Bottle from the co-op. Aroma comes off just a little hoppy. Seems kind of pale for an IPA, Medium golden body, small, tight white head. Taste brings in more hops, but not in the NW way, more subdued like an East Coast IPA. Hoppy but flat finish.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

L - Very light copper color, good amount of head, doesn't stick around very long but leaves nice lacing on the glass. Almost no appearance of carbonation.

S - Classic piney IPA with a touch of pineapple to give it the tropical vibe.

T - Kona website claims "bold, citrusy hops with a touch of tropical mango and passion fruit, balanced by the rich caramel malts", and they are mostly correct. Hops are up front, slight bit of citrusy, tropical fruit, decent finish with more hop than malt for my taste.

M - Medium-bodied, light carbonation, not overpowering like some IPAs.

O - A nice west-coast IPA that Hawaii can be proud to serve.

From a bottle marked September 11, 2015. Looks great - orange, slightly cloudy, with a nice head. Smell is a little faint, mainly citrus and hops. Light to medium feel with hop bitterness at the end and on the aftertaste. A good West Coast IPA.
