Surprisingly malty for a South American beer, Cusquena is also dark golden in color. The creamy white head holds fairly well, and it leaves some remarkably nice rings of thin lace about the glass. Looking at the bottle I notice it states "100% Malt Lager", and that's evident in the nose along with some floral, grassy, and spicy hops. (Hmmm... it's a bit perfumey as well). The same malt and hop character follows in the flavor, and it's nicely bready and well-balanced. I find this to be much more of a Munich helles than an "American Macro Lager" as we have it listed here. It's quite nice, actually, and I'd welcome the opportunity to enjoy this any day over mass produced adjunct lager. There is a bit of a fermentation issue, however, which brings it down a bit, but other than that it's quite a pleasant surprise!

Appearance – Light yellow in color with a very nice, white, foaming head that laced the glass.

Aroma – Skunked with a light hoppy undertone.

Taste – Not as bad as I thought. The typical cheap Gummi-Bear sweetness is there along with some Jolly Green Giant corn, but there’s just enough touch of hops to make this one palatable.

Mouthfeel – Somewhat refreshing and, of course, very light in the body.

Drinkability – My first Peruvian cervesa, and it didn’t end up in the sink. I’m impressed.

Presentation: 12 oz gold foiled brown bottle with no freshness date.

Appearance: Very pale straw in color with a sprizty carbonation that leaves a faint wispy white lace.

Smell: Mellow grain a little sweet and bready.

Taste: Crisp with a pinch of sweet malt which quickly goes grainy and a bit dry. Translucent hop merely leaves a dim bitterness and an almost veggie aftertaste follows.

Notes: Not a bad imported lager ... no undesirable skunkiness. Easy to drink and refreshes the palate though no real redeeming qualities, just a ho-hum lager.

My first Peruvian beer, this pours a clear, pale, golden body that is full of carbonation. One centimeter white head of large bubbles quickly collapses and leaves no lace. Aroma has some grainy malt and spicy, sulfuric hops. Mouthfeel is light bodied, and awash with high carbonation. Taste is OK, with some sweetish grainy malt and restrained spicy hop bitterness. Very ho-hum flavor, with an acridly bitter finish.
Better than most American macros, this is one I could enjoy while traipsing around Inca country. Otherwise, unremarkable and boring.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of Aug 2012. The bottle features a sort of Inca design moulded into it, and the label mentions that this beer is made with 100% malt.

Poured into a straight pint glass. A clear golden colour medium carbonation and some random floating particles. Forms a decent head of white foam that lasts for a minute or two before dissipating. Aroma of light malt with faint hints of corn and stewed leaves. Not much going on.

Tastes of light malt with a dry finish. Slightly sweet, with hints of corn, stewed veg/leaves and a whiff of solvent. Not much bitterness to speak of. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, but rather watery. Mild aftertaste of stewed veg and corn.

Meh - a fairly typical macro lager. Relatively clean tasting but not terribly interesting. Probably OK to quench your thirst if you find yourself in Peru; just keep it cold. No need to hunt it down.

11.2oz bottle.

This beer pours a clear medium golden hue, with a skinny finger of soapy off-white head, which settles quickly, leaving but a few specks of lace around the glass in the process. It smells of sweet grainy corn and some mild alcohol. The taste is still quite sweet - creamed corn, a bit of barley malt, and soft earthy, resource-starved floral hops. The carbonation is quite tame, the body on the low side of medium weight, a bit cloying, yet adequately smooth. It finishes still sweetly grainy, with a veritable cheap breakfast cereal melange sensibility.

While not good in the greater sense, the flavour is at least there, corn and grain cousins alike. No skunk (thanks maybe to the brown bottle) and no real complaints. Easy to drink, methinks, if you had a whole plate of something corn-based sitting in front of you.

Pale gold-straw in color with a white head that quickly reduces down to a thin film atop the beer. Aroma is very similar to the generic domestic brew, a la Budweiser, with maybe a touch more bite to it.

Flavor is similar to the aroma, with perhaps a touch more depth and character (which also might be because this particular serving spent a good while in my cellar/closet before consumption).

It tastes somewhere between a "good ole American brew" (a derogatory term in my vocabulary) and a "euro-skunked" generic import. I think I'd rather have this than either extreme, but there's honestly no reason to go back to this beer.

On the positive side, though, I added a new country to my beer reviews, and tasted what my brother and his cohorts drank while sneaking out on a high school trip to Peru a few years back.

Tasted in a restaurant in Lima, Peru.

Appealing golden colour, no head to speak of.

No strong smell but a faint aroma of chemicals and malt.

Tastes strongly of corn with hints of honey with a long aftertaste where the the honey battles with an unpleasant metallic bit. Ultimately it´s the metallic taste you are left with.
My companion described it as off tasting.

I left the bottle unfinished

Pours a light yellow with a light white head.

Light yeast nose with a little fresh white bread character.

Medium bodied with nice pleasant simple flavors of light yeast and with a nice malt balance.

Short finish but a pleasant session beer. Has some character and some flavor.

Let me just say right off that I did not enjoy this beer at all. A one mm head and orange amber color. Smells a little malty and not much else. No mouthfeel at all. Tastes like water with a little carbonation. No body, substance or mouthfeel at all. The only thing I like was the bottle which has the Machu Picchu granite blocks on the bottle.

Cusquena pours into the pint glass from the unique brown bottle and displays a frothy two-finger head and a transparent golden straw color. Aroma of malt, caramel, and a slight Saaz floral hop character. The taste parallels the aroma and is very balanced and carbonated with a light body. This is a surprising beer and is a great transition from the true mass-marketed American Macro lagers. Cusquena is very refreshing and is a fantastic buy for these hot Texas summers.

pale, yellow clear beer that is refreshing if cold, but there's just not much there. Ok, sure it's beer, but not great beer and life's too short for that. Don't bother. Get something better if you need a light beer such as Sam's summer ale, Pyramid's summer, a shiner blonde or a hoegaarden

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mostly of malts, some notes of corn. Taste is like the smell, malts and corn, not bad but not very complex. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and has good drinkability. Overall this is a decent brew.

Pours a clear straw color with a fizzy white head that leaves no lacing.

Smells of grainy sweetness and a little grass.

Tastes of the grainy malts with a touch of hops. Malts have a sweet grainy character with a little bread. Some grass and lemon notes come on the end.

Mouthfeel is light with a crisp amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is what you'd expect with nothing offensive about it.
