Located in a very cool, hip, happening street in downtown Keene, Modestman is worth checking out. While the vibe is more modern - techno / club music playing in the background - it was very clean & hip. Smallish beer selection; seemed mostly sours... but, again, a great location.

Vibe is brewery handbook-standard post-industrial-space faux-hip however, since the brewery is located in a former storefront bank, there doesn’t seem to have been any reason to have torn out the perfectly serviceable ceiling and walls and painted everything black other than a callous disregard for acoustics. There is outdoor seating available during this time of plague, plain wooden picnic tables out back which blessedly haven’t been painted black or embossed with skulls and snakes, or whatever the-fuck-all-else, but which were largely occupied by the sort of skinny jeans-wearing pretentious hipster-wannabes and refugees from soviet-era Berlin discotheques that one would never have guessed there were so many of in little semi-rural Keene, NH.

Quality is a mixed bag. I sampled a sour which was very tasty, a legitimately good APA, and possibly the least authentic supposed-saison I’ve ever tasted but, again, it was tasty so what’s to complain about? There were two NEDIPA’s canned but not available on tap which, despite being priced @$22, I bought a four-pack of each (no singles). The NEDIPA’s were quintessentially Trillium-like in both price and character (i.e., less reminiscent of fermented malted barley than of composted melon rinds). Anyway, if you like Trillium, you’ll probably like Modestman.

Service was adequate if at times eye-rollingly douchey. I would observe that, when selecting a target demographic, you might want to consider whether you would be better off, economically speaking, pandering to pretentious emaciated faux-hipster douchewaffles who could maybe consume a single 4.2% sour every other day or so, or a hearty, robust, honest yeoman who clearly can, and has, put down a four-pack of double IPA’s before supper. Just saying.

Selection was limited. Some sours, an alleged saison, an APA... I think that was it. Two NEDIPA’s in cans, as mentioned, at the unconscionable price point of $4.50 per can.

Can't say enough good things about these guys. I'm from Brooklyn so am pretty accustomed to good brew, but I moved to NH a couple years ago before Modestman opened. When I saw they were opening I thought, "How cute, another shitty local brewery." But after my first beer, wow! I realized they got it nailed. Not a huge selection here, but I don't see that as a minus but a plus. Their DIPAs are world class, seriously. I'd put them up against anyone, even my Bklyn go-to: Other Half. Probably even better then OH, in fact. Only small pick is their DIPAs all kind of blur together, but since they're so damn good I'm not complaining to loudly. Their lighter stuff is all very fine, and they makes some sours that are terrific tho I'm a huge fan of the style. Their saison, which I just tried, was very near a Dupont. Hope these guys make it through the 'rona. They seem to be doing a nice business, and their food truck offerings are quite good. Good work, guys.

I've been getting mixed four pack cans from the owners restaurant during the covid-19 shutdown. Unbelievable quality New England IPA's. NH finally relaxed the regulations to allow for outdoor patio style seating which I was able to take advantage of on Memorial day this year, 5/25/20. Rad vibe, took over an old bank location on Main st. In my hometown of Keene NH. Looking forward to more good times to come at this location.
