The deep red, clear pour had a semi-respectable foam head that lasted for a few minutes. Subtle malt aroma / taste with very little hop kick. Pretty good amber ale with mass appeal – restaurant type offering. Still, it has enough flavors to invite one to partake all evening.

On tap at the brewery in St Chuck.

A- A smoky reddish amber. Poured with almost no head. No lacing.

S- Very smoky malt smell. Indistinct otherwise.

T- Again very smoky malt, and a veggie like hop palate clash. Hops are quite bitter. Not balanced. Finish is too dry, enhances the somewhat crude bitterness.

M- Quite watery, little carbonation bite.

O- The brewery seemed to specialize in lighter brews, i went for the most complex. Maybe the milder stuff is better executed.

A - Purplish red with a khaki head that looks small, but remains intact for some time.

S - Carmel malt and leafy hop aromas. Smells very much "to style."

T - Hearty and thick malt flavors are nicely balanced with some crackly autumn leaf hops. Tasty, but a bit underpowered.

M - Medium bodied and moderately carbonated with a slightly dry finish.

D - A great session brew. Could use a boost in the flavor department, but the flavors are good...just not quite powerful enough.

Poured a small sized tan head that consisted of fine-medium bubbles that fully diminished. The body had some carbonation and was cloudy with an amber hue.The nose was moderatley malty and a bit of hops. The flavor was hoppy tasting with a tingly, smooth and medium bodied. The lacing was fair with this beer.

Started out nice save for one complaint, no head. I think they don't know how to pour a beer, this is the second beer that had no head or any kind of disturbance up top. This was a nice amber color that shone good red through the glass as it hit the light.
I put below average on the smell because I didn't smell anything.
Taste was bland, dead, and stale. Small hops barely any malt for an amber - actually for any beer. The only difference it had from the blond was a small amount of bitterness from a touch of hops. It felt like water and finished stale. Dissappointed.

Tasted at the Trailhead Brewpub on 02/23/06.

Solid amber color with a very small off-white head. A very average amber with the standard malt aroma (a touch of roastiness) and flavor with hops only there to balance. Nothing wrong with this one really but nothing very memorable and certainly not one I'd go back to again.

Yet another unremarkable brewpub American Amber Ale ... I wonder why they bother.

Im sampling a room temp bottle poured into a pint glass. Ive been worried about this one as it appears to be a short fill with the liquid inside only reaching the shoulders of the bottle (barely).
The cap pops with a parge hiss and I worry about a gusher quickly tilting into my glass. Not needed, as the beer pours slowly down the sides of the glass building a creamy beige head of 2 cm that fades to a .5 cm surface layer.
The aroma is sweet caramel and toffee with a bit of grassy hop and some plasticy notes that dont bode well for the beer. The plastic is very faint and buried and fades almost completely after letting the glass breathe a bit.
First sip average body and fine tingly carbonation. The flavor is generally sweet malt with caramel and toffee dominant, followed by some grassy hop notes and the plastic has made it into the flavor. It is more prominent here and detracts from the finish of the beer. I think this could have been decent, but it appears to have picked up something as it looks great and is solid until the plastic along the way from brewery to my house.

Trailhead's Red displayed a dark redish tea color. Aroma was weak sweet malt, no hops, and a strong diacetyl butter odor. Initial taste sweet malt, with some possible flavor from oak chips. Lacking hop character it seemed out of balance. Body was appropriate for the style. A poor tasting beer.

On tap at the brewery.

A: Served an amber color with a decent head that fades to some lacing.

S: Aroma of roasted malt with just a hint of hops, not much else.

T: Taste is a muted roasted malt flavor with a mold bitterness and a clean finish.

F: Fairly light body, smooth with mild carbonation. Lacks character.

O: Another non-offensive beer from Trailhead.

Pours a dark amber color with 1/4 inch head. Slight retention and poor lacing. Smells of piney hops, spicy hops, and sweet malt. Fits the style of an American Amber/Red Ale. Tastes of sweet malt, spicy hops, and a hint of piney hops. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp, with a low carbonation level. Overall, poor appearance, weak aroma, feel, and body.

Drank this at the brewery on 9/17/06.

This poured a deep amber/red color with a tin head that left a little lacing on top. The aroma was of roasted malt with a bit of a sweet smell. This was a very smooth and sweet ale that didn't have alot of bitterness at all. Went down very easy and went well with the sandwich I had, which was delicious too! The server told me that this was one of their most popular brews and that they run out quite often. You can buy the bottles out by the entrance but they are a little pricey. Good brew!

Served this Red Ale on tap at the brewery in a pint glass. Poured an amber red color produced an average head, retention was barely average, it did leave some lacing on the glass. The aroma of this ale comprised of toasted malt and a slight suggestion that hops were used. Medium in body, however on the thin side of medium, some base toasted malt, semi sweet. Like all other Trailhead beers- the base malts are very weak. The caramel flavor that you would expect in a red was no where present. From what I have read, this is Trailhead's flagship beer- Needless to say this brewery has some work to do. Prost!

Enjoyed on-tap @ Trailhead Brewing Company in St. Charles, MO for $3.50. Tapped from the Dark Red Tap Handle w/ Trailhead Red on it into a 16oz Pint Glass.

Aroma- Has a prominent hop aroma that seems like it was dry hopped and has tons of citrus behind it. A bit of malt and sweetness is behind this also. Hop dominates the nose overall.

Appearance- Received with a 1 finger head that has great retention. Has a deep amber colored body that doesn't have much of any haziness behind it. Leaves suds behind.

Flavor- Hop flavor is very strong in this one as it hits the palate and mouth with full force. Besides this, the malts are pretty much hidden as well as any caramel notes. Finishes with a medium-high hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel- Medium- Full Bodied, Medium Carbonation, and then leaves nice hops on palate with a strong Cherry Taste?!?! Where did this come from?

Overall Impression- A very interesting Red ale! Strongly hopped and then has a crazy cherry finish on the palate. Really enjoyed getting to know this brew. Would recommend this one from the 3 I've had from Trailhead Brewing Co. Will be back for more! Cheers!

Probably the best of the beers that I tried at the taproom on this visit.
