Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Coffee Stout is a classic combination of a traditional stout and premium French roast coffee from St. Louis roaster, Kaldi’s Coffee. Roasted barley and coffee dominate the aroma, with the sweetness from the stout balancing the acidity of the coffee. We use a unique cold toddy extraction process to brew a less acidic coffee for the beer.

In the 1990’s, Kaldi’s staff started visiting the Schlafly Tap Room, asking for a pint of stout and a shot of espresso. Both Schlafly and Kaldi’s realized this was a match made in beer heaven, and soon started working together to find the perfect coffee blend to mix with our Oatmeal Stout. This collaboration continues today, with regular tastings to perfect the Coffee Stout.

A: This poured an opaque cola with moderate tan head.
S: It smelled like fresh coffee and cream, with a bit of dark chocolate.
T: It tasted like coffee grounds, with some earthy dark chocolate. It had a somewhat dirty bitter aftertaste.
M: It was watery with a little carbonation. Thin body.
D: This had great scent, ok taste, and weak body. The finish was a little rough, so it wasn't super easy to drink. Not bad, but not great quality.

Opaque black.
Head settles quickly.
Smells great with lots of coffee.
Taste follows aroma with prominent coffee. No chocolate or dark fruit to speak of.
Mouth feel is thin, and lets down the experience.
Tastes good and smells nice, just no richness to the feel.
Good dessert beer.

The first coffee stout I've tried, and a welcome addition to the expanding set of Schlafly beers I very much enjoy. I don't always like oatmeal stouts, but this combination hits me just right. The coffee smell and taste is strong, but adds a welcome bite and counterbalance to the sweet smoothness of the stout.

My chalice, Thulsa Doom, is being used for this review.

Pours a coffee brown-black with 100% opacity and enough space to let light in to highlight the edges in cranberry. Head is khaki colored and 1 finger, leaves moss on top.

Smells like opening a canister of Foldgers' Mild Roast coffee. That's about it.

Some sour funk out front followed by whole coffee bean, ending again with more funk. A bit of burnt charcoal on the finish. I don't know where it's coming from, but my guess is stale malt/hop mixture. The more I sip it the more it goes away but it's still there.

Feel is smooth, moderately carbonated, and a dry roasty finish.

Overall, eh...this may be a drain pour. It's not totally undrinkable but it's just not really enjoyable with all the off-flavors floating around.

Not roasty enough, but the coffee presence is there, replete with good depth of flavour. I'm no coffee expert, but it's redolent of Hawaiian coffee to my tastes. Oddly smooth and wet on the mouthfeel (on account of oats, methinks) which helps hide any coffee harshness or acidity at the expense of the duration of flavour.

A solid choice as a go-to coffee stout for those outside Founders' distribution area. That said, it's a no frills coffee stout and while it will scratch your coffee stout itch, discerning drinkers will fail to be impressed.

Well balanced, not too thick and quite drinkable, I just don't like the bitter French roast coffee beans that roll over the milder cocoa malts.
