Style: Oatmeal Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.70%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Coffee Stout is a classic combination of a traditional stout and premium French roast coffee from St. Louis roaster, Kaldi’s Coffee. Roasted barley and coffee dominate the aroma, with the sweetness from the stout balancing the acidity of the coffee. We use a unique cold toddy extraction process to brew a less acidic coffee for the beer.

In the 1990’s, Kaldi’s staff started visiting the Schlafly Tap Room, asking for a pint of stout and a shot of espresso. Both Schlafly and Kaldi’s realized this was a match made in beer heaven, and soon started working together to find the perfect coffee blend to mix with our Oatmeal Stout. This collaboration continues today, with regular tastings to perfect the Coffee Stout.

I love coffee stouts, and I think this is my favorite I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. Way to go, Schlafly.

L (3.5) - Pours a nice dark, stout color. Little to no head. And whats there is kinda dark and sad.

S (4) - Smells good. Get a nice coffee note.

T (3) - Coffee. I get it should taste like coffee, but this was too overbearing. I thought I was drinking cold, slightly carbonated coffee.

F (4) - Decent feel. Not overly carbed, and drinks well. Maybe a little thin for an oatmeal stout?

O (3.5) - I bought this one on a lark, and probably won't again. Maybe it's just me, but I thought the coffee taste was too over-the-top.

Poured a dark brown with a light-tan head. A little thin; does not grab the glass.

Had a strong coffee scent along with some nice chocolaty notes mixed in along with.

Taste was a very smooth blend of roasted coffee, chocolate and a touch of caramel.

Very light on the bitterness; nice balance of a sweet stout versus the bitterness/acidity of the coffee.

A little on the thin-side as far as feel goes. Not necessarily a bad thing but I typically prefer more of a medium-bodied coffee stout.

Overall I really liked the balance and drinkability of this coffee stout. I’m generally pretty impressed with Schlafly’s. I wish this was a bit thicker and had a higher ABV; but I get what they were going for.

Very drinkable - not heavy at all. Just wish there was a brighter coffee flavor here.
