Our Coffee Stout is a classic combination of a traditional stout and premium French roast coffee from St. Louis roaster, Kaldi’s Coffee. Roasted barley and coffee dominate the aroma, with the sweetness from the stout balancing the acidity of the coffee. We use a unique cold toddy extraction process to brew a less acidic coffee for the beer.

In the 1990’s, Kaldi’s staff started visiting the Schlafly Tap Room, asking for a pint of stout and a shot of espresso. Both Schlafly and Kaldi’s realized this was a match made in beer heaven, and soon started working together to find the perfect coffee blend to mix with our Oatmeal Stout. This collaboration continues today, with regular tastings to perfect the Coffee Stout.

Pours a failry clear dark dark brown color with a small creamy tan head that recedes quite rapidly to leave some minimal lacing.

Aromas begin all java forward for sure with a great deal of mocha and espresso. Roasted coffee through and through with little else coming through.

The tastes begin with a lot of black, slightly stale coffee with some oats and mocha in the background. Did I mention this tasted like coffee, really just overwhelmingly, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if that's what your in the mood for but I feel this lacks the nice toasted bready base malt or something to counterbalance the roasted coffee flavors.

The mouthfeel is medium to light bodied with a lower amount of carbonation. Finish is slightly bitter and creamy but comes across more watery than I expected.

Overall if you want some coffee with a tad bit of alcohol, go for this. It was very drinkable but forgetable as a beer because of the coffee-esque thin mouthfeel and one dimentional flavor profile. I've had worse coffee beers for sure but definitely better ones as well.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1 1/4" tan head above the burgundy brown brew. Pillowy head fades very slowly, with heavy lacing. Aroma is of dark malts and coffee. Taste seems a bit light on the dark malts and coffee, and a bit of fruity shines through. Mouthfeel isn't quite as hearty as I'd look for in a stout, but drinkability is still quite nice. Not a bad product, this one right here...

Black with mahogany highlights. Very fine tan head settles to an incomplete cap.

Nose is really good dark coffee. Roasty, rich, with some chocolate and earthy notes. Total domination by the coffee, and no hint that this is a beer, rather than a cool cup of high quality Joe.

Medium in the mouth. Much better balance between the malt and coffee, with the former actually making an appearance here. Quite long and lingering on the finish. Nice stuff.

Soft, low carbonation gives a richer feel to the mouth than is really there. A bit too much coffee to have more than one or two at a sitting, but I still like this quite a bit.

A - One inch of light tan, creamy head with good retention; Very dark brown appearance; Moderate lacing mostly towards the bottom of the glass

S - Nice roasted coffee bean smell with just a bit of chocolate and sweetness; Very subtle grassy and floral hops

T - Pretty close to the smell; Good dose of roasted coffee bean flavor, though it isn't in-your-face robust; A little bit of bitterness in the taste; Tiny bit of chocolate and sweetness with a touch of citrusy and floral hops as well

M - Above moderate amount of carbonation; Medium bodied, though the beer feels a bit thin in the mouth

O - I thought this was a solid brew overall with a pretty tasty flavor profile. There's a good amount of coffee flavor without being too unbalanced. This wasn't quite as smooth as some other oatmeal stouts, but the lighter feel of this beer, coupled with the lighter ABV, makes it session worthy. I wouldn't mind trying this beer again, especially when I'm in the mood for a lighter bodied stout.

Pours dark brown to black...looks like coffee with small amount of tan head. Smell is of iced coffee, maybe mocha, something I really enjoy! Taste is good, iced coffee, chocolate, and a small amount of hops. Mouthfeel is good although I prefer a little thicker for this type of brew. Really only a one timer per night kinda beer but I do like this for a change of pace.

Pours a very dark brown, almost black color with a mocha colored head that fades pretty fast to a nice sheen and collar. Nice lacing.

Big coffee smell, naturally, but not a bitter roast, closer to sourish milk chocolate. The taste makes good on this promise, with a strong coffee flavor, finishing with a brisk hop snap.

Chocolate sweetness upfront is almost bitter. Roasted coffee flavors with a nice vanilla oatmeal undertone. Slight bitterness in the finish.

High carbonation, but a little watery.

Overall this is a pretty good coffee stout. It has a very nice flavor, rich in body, and some flavors linger in the end.

Aroma is roasty malt, coffee grounds, a touch of chocolate, licorice, and rounded out by nutty malt sweetness. Flavor reveals strong coffee dominance throughout, accented by dark chocolate. There's a touch of an acrid character initially, which fades in the lightly bitter, roasty finish. Toasted nuts emerge in the aftertaste. Coffee isn't my favorite, but this is a well constructed beer.

I have to say that, normally, Schlafly doesn't tend to impress me. This fairly sessionable coffee/oatmeal (maybe breakfast) stout is solid though.

Pours with the color and basic consistency of coffee. A nice deep coffee brown that's nearly opaque. Lacing is always present and a bit viscous even though the body of this beer wouldn't suggest any such thing. Medium body... Maybe even light for a stout... This actually makes this brew quite drinkable. Aroma and flavor are simple and not overpowering. I love this quality in a breakfast stout. Coffee grounds, a touch of chocolate malt, roast... Meh... That's about it.

If you go into drinking this as it should be a damn fine nightcap, think again. If you'd like a light coffee stout to start your day or to end your work day with a cup of a Joe meets beer, here you go. Very drinkable and satisfying.

poured cold from the bottle a deep dark chocolate brown to a founders brewing goblet with a full finger, big bubbled, tan head with nice retention and a bit of lace.

big aroma of espresso roast and sweet dark malts.

coffee forward, woody, dark sugars, and unless I'm imaging it, a bit of dark fruits (?)

thin bodied for the style, creamy, no
real bitter, sweet to the back of the tongue.

drinkable - yep.

My last beer before i drive out to Dark Lord Day!

A: Deep brown with ruby-brown highlights. Thin head

S: Coffee, brown caramel malts, chocolate, a slight nuttiness

T: Espresso up front with a hint of chocolate and nuts coming through later. Some figs? The finish is bitter coffee and dry. Nice!

M: Mildly over carbonated but the finish is great

D: Sure. I'll have another

The coffee nose is pretty excellent. Fresh, clean, cold-brewed coffee with minimal astringency, plenty of smooth coffee aromatics. The coffee character is just exceptional here. The palate opens with plenty of coffee, smooth, with low bitterness and acidity and mild roast. I wish they'd brew a more aggressive base beer for this, as after the wonder that the nose is, the palate doesn't quite live up to it. Thin, a little over carbonated, the mid-palate is rather weak with a mild grainy bitterness, coffee and a little cocoa. No fucking figs here. Drying on the finish, the carbonation takes away from the oatmeal here. Solid stuff.

A: Pours a deep dark brown with about a fingers worth of tan head that leaves minimal lacing.

S: A huge roasted coffee aroma from this beer, so much so that I can't smell anything else.

T: Roasted coffee with a bit of a sweet caramel hint. The carbonation really seems to bring out the coffee flavor in this beer. The drink finishes with a bitter coffee ground taste to it. If you don't like coffee definitely don't drink this beer!

M: Feels a bit thin or watery, has a bit too much carbonation and not creamy like I would expect from a stout.

D: Drinkability is decent, it would be much better if it were a bit creamier without so much harsh carbonation.

Opaque black.
Head settles quickly.
Smells great with lots of coffee.
Taste follows aroma with prominent coffee. No chocolate or dark fruit to speak of.
Mouth feel is thin, and lets down the experience.
Tastes good and smells nice, just no richness to the feel.
Good dessert beer.

A-Black in the glass, one finger head that last long and not much carbonation.

S-Coffee but it is extremely burnt and roasted. Malt and some chocolate but not much.

T-Very roasty coffee. Almost burnt. Some smoke/beef jerky like notes, similar to a smoked beer. Tad bit of caramel and chocolate.

M-Lighter, watery and not much carbonation.

O-One of the few times Schlafly has disappointed me. I was expecting better on this one.

Average lookign black stout with small head

Smells with faint hints of chocolate, coffee and roasted and burnt malts

Tastes like it smells with chocolate, coffee and burnt notes. Pleasant tasting and slight crisp finish. Smooth and easy to drink.

Mouthfeel - a tad watery

Overally - not too bad, but I've had much better crafted and flavored coffee/oatmeal stouts.

Very dark brown body, with a tan head that's modest in size. Settles down to a thin cover, leaving moderate lacing.

Aromas of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, with a cup of coffee thrown in as well. Americano with cream in it.

Starts off with nice, medium roast coffee. Smooth, with only a touch of bitterness. Silky texture from the oatmeal. Rich, bittersweet chocolate flavors with light hop bitterness on the finish. Cola flavors begin to develop as the beer warms.

Great balance between bitter and sweet. A very nice oatmeal stout.

This beer pours a very dark near black brown. It is supposedly made by mixing coffee with the schlafly oatmeal stout. Taking a big smell of this and you instantly get some roasted coffee and dark malts. A very nice smell. The taste is exquisite, taste just like it smells. A fairly decent mouthfeel, not super thick, but not thin. This is a superb coffee stout, but more than 2-3 would be overboard for me.

Picked this up in Totowa earlier this week. I had no idea that this was a Oatmeal Stout until I looked up this beer on here, since it wasn't as full as others that I've had in the past. As others have commented on here, this was quite thin and more like carbonated coffee rather than actual beer. On its own, it was fine but I expect an Oatmeal Stout to have the taste and body of actual oats and I think that this beer spread itself thin just a bit here.

The pour was as to be expected - cola brown with just a hint of garnet around the edges, with a fluffy tan head that quickly settled and a fair amount of lacing on the side of my pint glass that I drank down the side of. Lots of coffee and espresso in the nose but not a lot of oats. The look and mouthfeel of this beer was of the aforementioned cola without the sugary stickiness as the burnt notes of the coffee ended up taking over to a large degree here. If Starbucks brewed a beer, this would be it (although this would be a better buy for the buck!) and the hop bitterness really couldn't be found here. There was a faint bitter chocolate undertone to this as well with just a bit of vanilla extract and molasses to give this some bite. A fair presence of carbonation was here as well but not enough to scrub my palate clean after each sip.

At the alcohol was light here, as there was hardly any booze to be detected as I did "shots" of this coffee, er...beer. While I like something that pushes the edge a bit, something was missing here. Maybe it was the oats, some more powder to the chocolate, or some more bubbles to give this some life. Espresso tends to be watery, flat, and bitter and that's what this was too. If that's your thing, drink away! It will save you a trip to the place with the long lines, green aprons, and hum of the coffee machines.

Very dark brown. 2 finger light brown head that leaves thick lacing.

Aroma is, not surprisingly, heavy on the coffee, but a little sweet malt shows through as well.

Light sweet malt upfront, followed immediately by loads of coffee merging with the flavor of roasted malt. A bit of acidity from the coffee.

Fairly light for an oatmeal stout, kind of watery for the style. Moderate. Prickle of carbonation. Drying on the tongue, almost astringent. Heartburn-like feel in the throat mimics coffee.

Probably a good session brew. The rather light mouthfeel, while perhaps atypical for the style, actually adds to the drinkability. An easy drinking beer.

Pours a dark ruby-tinted chestnut brown, deep mahogany when held up to the light, topped by a dense and foamy light tan head.

Medium roast coffee on the nose with a moderate flinty, minerally roasted barley base. A little bit of earthy cocoa underneath, but subtle. Not as big on the coffee--or the stout--as the better examples of the style, but it's hard to complain with an $8 sixer.

Coffee picks up on the palate, as well as the minerally roasted barley. Sweet caramel mid-palate is quickly fleeting, fading into a mildly earthy and dry cocoa powder note. Finishes dry but faintly fruity. Medium bodied and moderately firm, but with a decided smoothness from the oats.

Not the most complex coffee stout, and far from the most flavorful, but a nice drinkable, sessionable entry.

Poured this 12 oz. brown bottle dated 10/6/06, into a Samuel Smith tulip glass. Created three fingers of pillowy tan head. The lumpy head rested on a clear but very dark ebony/ruby body. No lacing remained.

Smell was strong. I poured this beer at arms length and I could smell coffee immediately. Metallic malts and coffee bean oils. A slight molasses, dusty, earthy aroma appeared. Later walnut skins.

Taste was coffee bitterness. Bright. Not too sweet. Drying. Not cloying but one must like coffee in order to appreciate this beer.

Mouthfeel was lacking stout creaminess. Zesty medium to high carbonation was uncharacteristic. This one was more scrubby than expected. Moderated body.

Not sure how the Cards/Pads game turned out, but it was shaping up to be entertaining. Now to this brew here. It pours a murky dark burnt sienna topped by a finger of lightly dusty dirty white foam. The nose is dominated by a rich coffee aroma, with some mild molasses, dusty dark chocolate, and lightly chlorinated wheat rollicking behind. The taste embitters the coffee, while simultaneously complimenting it with some rye notes. The chocolate also gets some bitterness (we're nearing cookin' choc here), and the roasted malts seem rather burnt. A hint of light leather hides in the back. The body is a lightly hefty medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a pretty smooth feel. Overall, a nice coffee stout, though the bitterness borders on harshness. I could see drinking more of them, though.

Puffy cap of long lasting tan foam that leaves some sticky lacing... metallic aroma that is a bit of a downer. Dark roasty mahogany color, some broken skim, though it maintains some foam on top.

Mellow and rich coffee flavor, roasty and woody. Body is a bit thin, but mimics coffee to an extent. Somewhat bitter and roasty, dry aftertaste. Dry cocoa and bakers chocolate linger. Coffee flavor is clean and isolated, lending a succinct character to define this coffee stout. Maybe not groundbreaking compared to Bells or Founders iterations, but it has a perceptible local following in southern Illinois and St. Louis for sure.

This beer was poured into an Imperial pint glass at 50° from a 12 ounce bottle. A 'Bottled With Love on' date was on the bottom of the label. Two fingers of light brown or dirty white head were created with the pour and some lacing resulted as the head dissipated. The beer was dark brown in color.

There was a hint of malt as I moved the glass around to see clarity and color. The malt was more evident with the first inhalation which revealed a dark roasted malt aroma. Coffee and hop bitterness were secondary aromas lifting from the glass.

Dark roasted malt was the initial flavor I sensed. Hops were well coordinated as the coffee and malt provided decent flavors.

There was a slight prickly or tickling taste on the tongue to start. The sense was then smooth and nicely put together.

It is difficult for me to say if this beer would be any better had it been continuously refrigerated as recommended by the brewer. I thought the appearance and aroma slightly better but with taste and feel well integrated for a nicely brewed beer.

A - Into a snifter. Inch of light tan head. Dark brown, can still see light coming through when held up.

S - Stick your nose into a bag of freshly roasted coffee. That's what we have here. Also some burnt malt and a hint of vanilla and dark chocolate.

T - Roasted malt, coffee, bitter ending.

M - Crisp and light bodied for an oatmeal stout. Moderate carbonation, less would be better.

D - Good to drink. I like that there is no doubt that it is a coffee stout. Great looking and aroma. The taste and mouthfeel were fine but not standout.
