Style: Kölsch

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Kölsch is a classic golden ale that uses a centuries old yeast strain sourced from a famous Kölsch brewer in Köln, Germany. Fermented at 62 degrees, then cold conditioned, it has the delicate fruity aroma of an ale with the crisp, clean finish of a lager. It is brewed with lightly roasted malt and 100% German Noble Hops: Perle for bitterness and Hallertau Traditional for flavor and aroma.

In 1918, the term Kölsch was used to describe the ale brewed in Köln, a city on the Rhine River in western Germany. The style began to rise in popularity in the 1960s and now, many American craft brewers brew variations of the style, labeling it a golden ale. Our Kölsch is unique to the Schlafly brewery because Ulrike, a native of Köln and wife of brewery co-founder Tom Schlafly, connected Schlafly Beer with the Gaffel Brewery of Köln. Schlafly Beer won the Gold Medal for Best German-style Kölsch in the World Beer Cup in 2010.

Pours a cloudy golden straw color. A soft bed of frothy head, that is an off white, yellowish, color, dissipates and leaves a bubbly film.
First impressions in the nose are of a silky pilsner malt aroma. This is followed by a touch of green grapes and a sweet honey and cereal aroma that is prevalent throughout.
In the mouth, first impressions are that it is clean, dry in the palate and that it is highly quaffable. There is a modest grassy hops presence that adds balance and the lightest touch of bitterness. As the drink warms, there is a light fruity, grape like malt sweetness that opens up the flavor.
Medium bodied, dry and balanced.
I thought this was highly enjoyable and think it should have a higher rating.

Pours a clear golden color with an incredibly well retained two inch white head that left lots of lacing. Smell is pretty mild with notes of hops and grains. Tastes of slightly sweet bready malts, corn, grass, mildly bitter hop presence and some floral notes. Light bodied, well carbonated, smooth, clean, crisp and refreshing.

Look: amazing, golden straw color, big white head that lasts, good lacing

Smell: slight grain, earthiness, and a touch of dankness

Taste: light yeast, just a touch of hops and breadiness

Feel: smooth and sessionable

Overall: quality beer, won't blow you away but that's not the purpose of a kolsch. Very good value as well, would consider buying again at the price if I'm in the mood for a bit lighter of a beer.

Pours a deep hazy golden with lots of thick creamy foam. Lots of lacing present. Smells somewhat nondescript, maybe a little hoppy, but mostly just a solid corny and grainy smell. The head goes on for a very long time - came back to the beer after running an errand and after almost 30 minutes, it was still there. Tastes of a mild bitter hop - mostly just for flavoring. No lingering aftertaste, not incredibly distinguishing features here, mainly a solid Kolsch. Would recommend in the future for a nicely priced ale.

Poured into a stange, the appearance was a soft golden yellow color with a firm finger's worth of white foamy head that died off at a decent pace. Moderate sliding lace.
The aroma had some sweet grassy to earthy hops up front, somewhat settling on some corn sweetness and a light bready to yeasty sort of arrangement.
The flavor was moderately sweet between the hops and the corn and breadiness. Slick sweet bready to corn-like aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was between light and medium bodied with a good sessionability about it. Carbonation felt good. ABV felt good as well.
Overall, pretty nice easy drinking beer worthy of having more of this time of the year and pretty good interpretation by an American brewer.

Relatively clear gold with a white cap that leaves strong lacing.

Sweet, bready aroma. Carries to the taste. Has a fruity note with a little plum and apple. Lightly grassy, herbal hop bitterness on the back end.

Medium bodied with modest carbonation. It's okay.
