Style: Kölsch

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Kölsch is a classic golden ale that uses a centuries old yeast strain sourced from a famous Kölsch brewer in Köln, Germany. Fermented at 62 degrees, then cold conditioned, it has the delicate fruity aroma of an ale with the crisp, clean finish of a lager. It is brewed with lightly roasted malt and 100% German Noble Hops: Perle for bitterness and Hallertau Traditional for flavor and aroma.

In 1918, the term Kölsch was used to describe the ale brewed in Köln, a city on the Rhine River in western Germany. The style began to rise in popularity in the 1960s and now, many American craft brewers brew variations of the style, labeling it a golden ale. Our Kölsch is unique to the Schlafly brewery because Ulrike, a native of Köln and wife of brewery co-founder Tom Schlafly, connected Schlafly Beer with the Gaffel Brewery of Köln. Schlafly Beer won the Gold Medal for Best German-style Kölsch in the World Beer Cup in 2010.

Pours a deep golden/amber with long lasting white head and lacing. The smell is subdued fruity and bready. There are a lot of different flavors including grassy, bread, and a bit of lemon. Light to medium body with significant malty side. The carbonation is pretty light for the style.

Overall I'm enjoying this much more than most Kolsch I've had. A bit less fizzy and light more malty and substantial. Almost drinks more like a Helles lager, which I prefer. I would recommend this. First I've had from this brewery, if this is any indication I will need to find myself in St Louis more often.

On tap at Kramerbooks & Afterwords Café (in DC), pours a dark hazy gold with a thick fluffy white head that dissipated slowly. Aroma is a sweet fruitiness. Taste is more malty, but there are a cacophony of competing flavors: yeast, grain, and lemon. Decent carbonation and mouth-feel is decent.

On draft.

Pours a clear crisp golden color. Appears effervescent with noticeable carbonation. Fluffy white head dissipates leaving tons of sticky lacing and a thin residual head.

Smell is a light aroma of grains and malts. Slight white bread aroma with a hint of sweetness.

Taste follows the nose with a nice grainy flavor up front. Bready malts shine through with a nice balance. Nice slight sweetness without being too sweet. Finish has a slight hoppy bitterness from the Noble hops. Flavor profile of the Noble hops is present - slightly grassy and floral.

Feel is light and crisp with a refreshingness to the beer. Medium heavy carbonation is boted giving the beer a bubbly aspect.

Overall a really nice Kolsch. The Noble hops popped in this in a very nice way. Very good offering from Schlafly.

Pours a deep gold with a two finger fluffy white head that persists throughout the consumption of the beer. Aroma is bready/cracker malt, floral tones, light fruit notes, with grass and slight earth on the finish. Taste follows with bready, cracker malt upfront, followed by floral and fruit, with a grassy, slight earth finish. Mouthfeel is clean and crisp, with enough heft to tell you are drinking a well made beer. Overall, this is quite a nice kolsch, from a brewery that puts out consistently well executed brews.

Nice flaxen color, great effervescence, just the right amount of foam. Really strong, fresh, bright-malty aromas, with delicate interplay of wet, new grass and hay. Very refreshing, buoyant flavor-profile, with good smooth bright-malt—which aren't sweet, but aren't *particularly" dry, either—and more of those nice grassy, hay notes, but with a touch of yeast-fruity elements to give is superb depth and complexity. Very nice, light, mouthfeel that never gets in the way. Excellent morning or early-afternoon ale.

a: clear straw yellow with an amber undertone. head pours 2 finger, round and solid - looks like you could rest a coin on it

s: grassy, grainy, lemongrass, some solid malt sweetness, and a touch of clove

t: taste follows the nose pretty well. there is the sweet grain flavor upfront, with a nice crisp earthy herbal followup that adds a touch of bitterness. lemongrass towards the back end...finishes with the malt. just a faint generic lager presence in here as well on the back sides of the tongue

m: light mouthfeel, with high carbonation. good mouthfeel for the style

o: overall this is a nice beer. its crisp, refreshing, and light. it could use a bit more pop, but i'd drink again for sure

12oz bottle "bottled with love on 06/30/2015.
Body is a hazy yellow color with 1/2in white head.
There is some slight fruit aroma, but led mostly by classic hallertau hop.
Taste is grassy, carbonated, and sweet.
Light feel with an almost tart finish.
All flavors and aromas are subdued, nothing exciting, but easily drinkable. A good nod to the style.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Pale yellow like straw color with a finger and a half of white head that quickly dissipated. Smelled of apple and pear with a little grain to it. Taste is mild, a little grain with some fruit in it, apple primarily. Body is light with a little carbonation. Taste does not linger very long at all. Overall an easy drinking beer that won't stand up to food but would do well for sitting around and having a few with friends.

On tap in DC. Crystal clear pour with a light head. Effervescent body gives way to a light, effervescent taste. Clean, crisp acidic fruit snap of lemon and orange peel precedes the soft crackery malt body. Finishes dry with a barely touch of lingering bitterness. Good beer, so drinkable.
