Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Pumpkin Ale blends the spices of the harvest with full-bodied sweetness for a beer that tastes like pumpkin pie. Pounds of pumpkin form a malty foundation that supports the fall flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.

While pumpkin beers were produced in the early days of the American colonies, they were different from the pumpkin beers we know today. Colonists used pumpkin and squash as the fermenting medium, since malted barley was scarce. Once malt became more readily available, it replaced these alternatives to grain. In the 1990’s, American craft brewers reintroduced the style to the delight of pumpkin beer drinkers.

By far one of my favorite pumpkin beers of the season. Put a cinnamon/nutmeg rim on the glass and you've got a glass of pumpkin pie.

Intense aroma of pumpkin pie with a luscious deep orange-red color. Taste is strong pumpkin pie, very sweet, with a malty finish that is as close to pumpkin pie as you get. There is an alcohol presence which detracts but overall a great pumpkin.

I remember this being good but nowhere near as robust as Cigar City's and Alewerk's offerings. Here goes:

A: Excellent. A clear but dark brown with a large head and very substantial lacing. This beer looks better than I remember it.

S: Sure, has a smattering of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar, but these scents are far, far less robust than in Good Gourd and Alewerks. Some caramel malt to back up the added spices, but nothing special.

T: Again, less robust than in other offerings of the style. Good but somewhat disappointing. While the pumpkin spices are apparent, they're ultimately eclipsed by a grainy malt background. Noting special. I actually think Southern Tier's offering beats this one, too.

M: Good, but somewhat light.

O: A good beer. Maybe I judged it too harshly. I just compare this one to Good Gourd and Alewerks and find those two far better.

As for Pumpkin beers, this one is my favorite hands down. Smooth with just the right level of pumpkin flavor, not pumpkin-pie mind you, while retaining it's characteristics as a beer.
