Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Pumpkin Ale blends the spices of the harvest with full-bodied sweetness for a beer that tastes like pumpkin pie. Pounds of pumpkin form a malty foundation that supports the fall flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.

While pumpkin beers were produced in the early days of the American colonies, they were different from the pumpkin beers we know today. Colonists used pumpkin and squash as the fermenting medium, since malted barley was scarce. Once malt became more readily available, it replaced these alternatives to grain. In the 1990’s, American craft brewers reintroduced the style to the delight of pumpkin beer drinkers.

Pours orange with decent head from bottle into glass. Smell is of pumpkin fruit, pumpkin pie, and requisite spices. Taste is similar but more emphasis on spices, maybe clove, ginger, and nutmeg? Balanced and tastes like a balance of pumpkin pie and pumpkin.

Orange color with a fair amount of carbonation. Aromas and notes of pumpkin and spice. Velvety mouthfeel. Lingering finish of cinnamon and caramel, with some boozy, Bourbon qualities that aren’t too overpowering. When the time of year comes around for pumpkin ales that are 99% all the boring same, this is among the 1% that elevates itself.

I'll preface by saying I generally HATE pumpkin beers. Really pumpkin everything. Just because it's October, I don't know why we have to have pumpkin Coffee, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin ice cream and a host of other items that taste like the same fake flavor additive. Every pumpkin beer had that save forced, fake taste, and I stopped trying them.

Then I was at a friend's and offered the only thing he had. Somehow that Cold, Outdated Bottle tasted like hot, fresh baked pumpkin pie. It's everything everyone else has said here. Perfect spice, perfect feel.

It's still not a style I would pick, but compared to everything else out there, this pumpkin beer is head and shoulders above the rest.

This is the best pumpkin beer that I've ever tried, it's basically pumpkin pie in a bottle! The spices are balanced perfectly and the body of this beer Is perfect as well and not too heavy, unlike many pumpkin beers that i've had in the past.

Not a big fan of the pumpkin style, but if you have to have one, this may be it. Pours red Amber with minimal off-white head that rings out pretty quickly. Smells of nutmeg, pumpkin, and malts. Tastes like pumpkin pie beer. A little too sweet for my liking, but this is the perfect thanksgiving brew to share with friends and family. Serves as a good a conversation piece. Finishes medium, sweet and syrupy. Not bad if you are looking for a pumpkin brew.

12 oz. bottle, bottled with love on 07/21/2016. A new one to me from Schlafly - "Ale brewed with pumpkin and with spices added". Acquired a single bottle of this stuff from the local bottle shop.

Poured into a Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a portly tawny reddish-brown body, a bit darker than might be expected (but that's a good thing), with a small finger's worth of frothy khaki tan foam that settles down to a nice surface skimming, and leaves some good fluffy scattered lacing. Appears aptly carbonated. Looks very very nice per the style.

S - Huge authentic pumpkin pie aromatics on this one: strong notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, honey, & cola-esque spicing pervades a sweetened, gourdy pumpkin puree presence. Subtle sticky sweetness / hints of demerara sugars.

T - Taste follows the nose: huge authentic pumpkin pie flavor in every sip - gourdy pumpkin puree, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove / cola-esque spiciness. Notes of sticky brown sugary sweetness pervades on the finish.

M - Feel is exceptionally smooth, crisp, creamy, & easy-drinking, especially for the modest 8.00% abv. Goes down nice and easy; a good autumnal warmer.

Overall, a nice pumpkin ale from Schlafly; one of the more memorable in the style that i can recall having in recent years. Very recommended.
