Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Pumpkin Ale blends the spices of the harvest with full-bodied sweetness for a beer that tastes like pumpkin pie. Pounds of pumpkin form a malty foundation that supports the fall flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.

While pumpkin beers were produced in the early days of the American colonies, they were different from the pumpkin beers we know today. Colonists used pumpkin and squash as the fermenting medium, since malted barley was scarce. Once malt became more readily available, it replaced these alternatives to grain. In the 1990’s, American craft brewers reintroduced the style to the delight of pumpkin beer drinkers.

Not a big fan of the pumpkin style, but if you have to have one, this may be it. Pours red Amber with minimal off-white head that rings out pretty quickly. Smells of nutmeg, pumpkin, and malts. Tastes like pumpkin pie beer. A little too sweet for my liking, but this is the perfect thanksgiving brew to share with friends and family. Serves as a good a conversation piece. Finishes medium, sweet and syrupy. Not bad if you are looking for a pumpkin brew.

12 oz. bottle, bottled with love on 07/21/2016. A new one to me from Schlafly - "Ale brewed with pumpkin and with spices added". Acquired a single bottle of this stuff from the local bottle shop.

Poured into a Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a portly tawny reddish-brown body, a bit darker than might be expected (but that's a good thing), with a small finger's worth of frothy khaki tan foam that settles down to a nice surface skimming, and leaves some good fluffy scattered lacing. Appears aptly carbonated. Looks very very nice per the style.

S - Huge authentic pumpkin pie aromatics on this one: strong notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, honey, & cola-esque spicing pervades a sweetened, gourdy pumpkin puree presence. Subtle sticky sweetness / hints of demerara sugars.

T - Taste follows the nose: huge authentic pumpkin pie flavor in every sip - gourdy pumpkin puree, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove / cola-esque spiciness. Notes of sticky brown sugary sweetness pervades on the finish.

M - Feel is exceptionally smooth, crisp, creamy, & easy-drinking, especially for the modest 8.00% abv. Goes down nice and easy; a good autumnal warmer.

Overall, a nice pumpkin ale from Schlafly; one of the more memorable in the style that i can recall having in recent years. Very recommended.

A: medium brown with an orange hue.
S: Whoa! Big spiced cider smell dominates all.
F: average carbonation, heavy alcohol gives warmth.
T: This is for the pumpkin latte fans. If want a pumpkin pie flavored beer go for it. Spices dominate all with a sturdy base of fresh pumpkin underneath ending with a tart twang from the pumpkin with lingering spice and alcohol notes. A very heavy handed offering with big flavors that compete against each other and never really integrate well. I prefer a beer with malt, roasted pumpkin and very light spice complimenting each other to create a cohesive whole. If you want a more laid back cohesive approach check out SA 20 pounds pumpkin. To each their own.

Poured a hazy, deep copper color with a quickly dissipating head. Maintained quite a bit of carbonation. Smell is like the bottle label says: pumpkin pie. Taste follows the nose quite closely but with maltiness and alcohol on the finish. Feel is very drinkable but the consistency almost feels like pure maple syrup. A very good pumpkin beer that i won't turn down in the future - but one is about all i can handle at a time with the 8% ABV.
