Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine June 2007.

This beer is a salute to their 15th anniversary, hence the name. Not many brewers go down the road of the American Dark Wheat Ale. It's one of the most underrated beer styles out there, so it's good to see another brewery going for it.

Hazed, reddish apple cider color, with a dense and healthy off-white froth that holds its own as it clings to the mug. Sweet floral and wheat aroma with a spicy backing. Hefty medium body with a creamy smooth mouthfeel. Heavy hand of malt up front with layers of spicy wheat, herbal hop and a fruity twang from middle to end. Long-lingering finale of spicy wheat and a touch of herbal hop resin.

Quite impressive, to say the least: a clear example that American brewers can be creative without going overboard. Grilled lemon-pepper pork loin and Asiago polenta would be an awesome pairing to toss that this beer.

First beer review! Hooray me!

Picked this up on a whim at the local wine & liquor store. Knew nothing about this until I got home & hit the site. Nice green labeled long-neck, with some hops & wheat stalks. "Bottle with love on Nov 13 2006." This beer, according to the Schlafly website, is commemorating their 15th anniversary.

A - Nice hazy, honey brown pour. Had a nice bit of fluffy white head. A little bit of lacing here and there.

S - Nice hefty wheat ale smell: lots of sweet banana & cloves aromas, some yeastiness, maybe a little bit of phenols, overall really nice and sweet and pleasant.

T - Big ol' shot of bananas, cloves, and wheat malt right off the bat. Yum. Lots of wheaty & yeasty flavors in the middle. Nice sweet, a little slick aftertaste. There's a bit of carbonation, but its a little thick, not effervescent. Very good for the style. The hops kind of ride along with the carbonation, but are out of the way otherwise.

D - Man, this is easy to drink, but there is enough sweetness & heft that I probably wouldn't want more than a couple at a time. Hard to imagine anyone wouldn't like this, at least in passing. This would be a nice late fall/winter release for non-hardcore beer drinkers to enjoy on a winter night. Not that the rest of us can't enjoy it right along with them... sure hope I can get more of this before it is gone forever...

Hazy orange amber body is topped by a small beige head. Patchy lacing is left on the glass. Aroma is spicy clove and pepper with fruity banana notes. Medium body with a zesty carbonation. Taste is very spicy, suggestive of a pumpkin ale. Notes of ginger, cinnamon, clove, pepper, and allspice float on the palate. Ripe banana fruitiness and wheat cracker make a nice base. Very tasty stuff here. Another winner from Schlafly.

On-tap at the Tap Room.

Pours a surprisingly light brown color, almost amber, with a one-finger slightly off-white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of large amounts of bananas with very light hints of darker fruits.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Banana flavors are joined by solid malt flavors up front that carry through until the sweet ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a very nice thickness with solid carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I could definitely have a few of these.

Overall the color was off on this beer but that was about it - definitely worth a shot.

Thanks to emerge077 for this brew
A- This beer has a dark copper brown body with a slight haze and a light tan head that fades quickly. There are a few strands of tiny carbonation trailing through the beer.

S- The tart cider note give way to a soft bubble gum and clove aroma that becomes more yeasty as the beer warms. As it warms the cider aroma becomes more of a toasted note.

T- The soft apple juice tartness with a faint dry biscuit quality give way to a faint clove and yeasty note. The finish is a soft green bitterness that has a club soda flavor and a slight fruity quality.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a tight fizz finish.

D- The mild wheat flavors and hefe yeast notes are intersting paired with the apple flavors.

Thanks to xmarcnolanx for this extra.

Pours a murky brown/amber. Decent fluffy head dissipates fast. Nose is of dark wheats and spice. At first taste the wheats come out but through the middle is banana with citrus spice. clove is present here. lingering aftertaste of slight banana taffy. Good crisp clean mouthfeel but nothing to write home about. Drinkability is very good. A great wheat offering from schlafly.

A - Murky turbid orange with a dark cast ...almost like a shadow in the beer. Some purple highlights are there too. A thin khaki head reduces to a collar.

S - German lager notes along with some wheat and spicy oktoberfest like notes.

T - Malty and sweet with a nice wheat twang. Reminds me of a light oktoberfest bier. Lots of yeast and fruit flavors with a good deal of tangy hops too. Banana.

M - Creamy and medium bodied with a crisp neutral finish.

D - A really nice session brew! Went great with my burger.

This nice amber wheat ale brings a frothy appearance (deep head) and no lace.

Superb and fragrant aroma - cinnamon, banana, and clove. Delectable!

The first taste impression is a well-balanced maltiness, with hints of banana and spicy clove.

Medium-bodied, this wonderful beer isn't flashy or showy, but it is a flavorful wheat beer, and one of Schlafly's finest. Eminently enjoyable and steady.

I enjoyed the Schlafly Oktoberfest, so I was eager to try this, as it was suggested by the manager of the liquor store.

Medium tan head. Cloudy, toffee in color.

Wheat, spices and fruit in the nose. Very neutral mouthfeel. Not much going on for all the things you smell, and it's over quickly.

For such little going on in the mouth, the finish is complex, with the bitter hops balanced nicely by the wheat and spices (cloves or all spice?).

Very drinkable. I'm sure I'll purchase a case of this when I visit the liquor store next.

Had this on tap at the Schlafley brewery/tap room. Served in a pilsner glass, it poured a deep reddish-golden-brown color with a thick bubbly white head. The aroma was surprising and very strong of bananas. The taste was even more so of bananas and a hint of other flavors, mainly cloves, but also of alcohol, lowering it's drinkability. It was quite strong, though I am unsure of the % ABV.

Goes from dark orange to mahogany thanks to the yeast. The nice off-white head leaves a good amount of lacing.

The aroma is... um, spicy? I can't rightly say what kind of spices we're looking at, but rest assured that it's spicy.

The flavor is -- again -- indescript spices with a dose of fruity sweetness.

Mouthfeel is a little too thin for me, but at least has a dry finish.

Drinkability is decent, but the sweetness would be too much after a couple pints.

This bottle is courtesy of BARLEYWINO, cheers! Bottled 17 Feb 07

Pours Amber/orangey copper with 3 fingers of sand colored head. Very good head retention & above average lacing

S: Cloves, pepper & phenolic notes

T: Slight pepperyness, grainyness & little fruittyness up front. Dryness, granyness, iron notes & crackery notes as this warms. Finishes with a hint of caramel, fruittyness (dates & apricots), hints of yeast, peppery rye& slight dryness

MF: Medium-bodied with low carbonation

Drinks easy, a good example of this style

120z bottle in Sam Adams glass
bottled on 2/20/09

A: Pours with a big fluffy off-white head that drops pretty quickly leaving a little bit of lace. Color is dark copper/light reddish, crystal clear.
S: Smells like a belgian, lots of spice, no banana at all. No hops.
T: Wheat yeast characteristics mixed with belgian-ness, on the spicy side, matches the nose, lots of clove. No malt presence, I expected a little caramel given the color. No hops either.
M: Crisp, well attenuated, highly carbed, tongue coating, seems to leave something behind in my mouth
D: This goes down very easy, a great summer beer. Could possibly be used to convert a BMC drinker in that it is not "heavy" or "bitter". One of the best american wheats I have had, I will be buying this again. Highly recommended.

Bottled with love on Nov 13, 2006. Tasted and reviewed on Nov 18, 2006—how’s that for fresh? No. 15 is a murky light orange in color with a ½ inch thick head that settles into a nicely formed white pasty ring around the pint glass—sticky patches noted throughout the course. On the nose are fresh banana custard pie offerings, and soft wheat tones; very aromatic. Some cloves are detectable as this beer warms. Up front, a definitive dark-hefe feel, with some banana peel and wheat-like offerings, creamy and sweet. Kisses of coriander and orange peel; although both are hidden, they are blended nicely. Medium bodied across the board—very little carbonation. The palate is cleansed, with both bananas, cloves and wheaty-ish malts. This is something that I could get used to. Unique style for this brewery, and incredibly enjoyable for the style; mighty tasty—a request for a year-round-offering of No. 15?

Poured from a 12 oz bottle to a pint glass, the liquid is a nice light copper with ok carbonation. The head is small white and leaves a bit of lace.

The smell is light and fruity, apricot & peach Notes.

The taste is good. mostly fruity apricot, peach & a touch of a banana with a hint of citrus, on light wheat bread. I did not get much spice at all, maybe a shake of pepper and a flake of cloves.

The mouthfeel is good, lighter body and great carbonation, It works well.

The drinkability is very good, I like this as a summer yard brew. Dang it's gone already!
Thanks Vancer, Prosit MK
