Very Good
Oak Aged BarleywineOak Aged Barleywine
Notes: Our Oak Aged Barleywine has a deep copper color and an intense malt flavor balanced by assertive hops. Fermentation with American ale yeast allows the caramel malt to shine. We age the beer on new, medium toast Missouri Oak to enhance its complexity and to develop its smooth, luscious character.

Barleywine is a classic English-style hearty ale. The term refers to a beer with the potency of wine and is often vintage-dated.

This beer will continue to age well in a cool dark place for several years, but it is ready to enjoy now.

Poured from a capped 750ml bottle into two St. Bernardus goblets. Thanks to HeatherAnn for the assist! Extra special thanks to HOMEBREWHAWK for the trade and hook up!

2007 version

A: Pours a hazy ruby-brown color. Off-white/eggshell colored head sadly leaves only a tiny amount of lace.

S: Aromas of vanilla, caramel, coconut, toasted nuts, toffee, and caramel apple. Delicious!

T: See everything above and then add the incredible flavor of alcohol soaked over-ripe dark fruit.

M: Sticky, spicy, sweet, with a compelling dryness. Touch of alcohol vapor.

D: Incredible! Covers all ends of the Barleywine spectrum. One of Heathers' favorites!

2013 vintage, cellar-aged. This is much better than I remember from a previous 2013 bottle enjoyed over a year ago. When served cold, I get some really nice, soft floral notes from the hops, along with orange-blossom honey and caramel. The flavors are subdued, subtle but well balanced. I prefer it that way; as it warms, I start to detect more oak from the barrel and some paper pulp from oxidation. Some more spice also comes to fore from the barrel-ageing, which is fine but doesn't make up for the other changes to the now-warmed flavor profile.

This is probably near its peak, based on my experiences and a quick scan of variations in ratings from other reviews noting the vintage.

2011 Vintage

Pours a copper color with a one finger light beige head, with good retention and spotty lacing. The aroma has caramel, citrus, oak, and vanilla. Smells nice.

Tastes sweet with caramel, toffee, citrus, vanilla, and dark cherries. The alcohol is noticeable, but not intrusive. Has a nice warming effect on a cold winter night.

Medium bodied with soft carbonation, with a caramel and toffee aftertaste. Overall a nice beer. Too bad it is listed as retired. I would like to try this again.

2009 bottle.

This has held up surprisingly well; a little thin, but still quite drinkable. Good flavor with a hint of raisins.

Well, since there's another package on its way from beandip right now, I figured we ought to take this one out, immediately, to close out his last box. Nice big 750ML bottle split with my wife, her happy-to-be-home-with-good-beer-beer. 2007 vintage.

Pours an odd color, a muted amber/red mix. Smell is a powerful mix of barrel & sweet malts.

Schlafly Reserve Barleywine is much earthier, much more subdued that I imagined from the smell. The barrel is fairly prominent, but there's a strong Mother Earth component, very fall-rain, fallen-leaves kind of thing. Low levels of vanilla, the creepy beginnings of oxidation, & scatterings of toffee & raisins. Alcohol still prominent after four years in the bottle. Quiet in the glass, a swirl brings no head. Too big & boozy to be terribly drinkable, but I can certainly hack through this half-bomber.

Overall, pretty good beer, but doesn't stand out in the constellation of barrel-aged barleywines. Enjoying it, but I really dig their Reserve Stout, & this one just isn't in the same class.

poured into a fluted tasting glass, Deep reddish amber witha one finger rocky head with good retention.

Smells of rich candy-like malts, a kiss of earthy hops and a hint of oak in the background.

Tastes overpoweringly sweet with a dark vine fruit essence lingering, just enough hops to support the bitterness but this is a showcase of malt variety.

Mouth is slightly viscous and oily, medium to low carbonation. Drinks slow but I wouldn't want to drink a fast barleywine.

2006 Bottling

The drink pours a deep, dark garnet with a mocha cap that retains great and leaves plenty of webby lacing on the glass.

Smell is oaky and malty with with a big bourbon note.

Taste is sweetly mellow with crisp notes of dry sherry accented with a bit of caramel and molasses.

Smooth and wonderful, the drink is definitely a sipper.

2007 bottle.

S: Caramel and toffee maltiness, some herbal with a touch of oxidation.

L: Cloudy brownish orange, white head that dissipates to not much.

T: Rich toffee and breadiness. A pleasant coconut flavor and sweetness. Medium low bitterness leading to more rich toffee and coconut. Finishes fairly clean with some alcohol spiciness and fairly clean dryness with some toffee.

M: Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Alcohol somewhat present.

Loved the coconut, maybe from the oak? A little thin for the style, not bad, but not great.

Pours clear dark copper with ½” fine off-white head and some columns of carbonation. Puts up a lasting film on the glass.

Gives off a light, oaky bourbon with rich aromas of plum pudding and nuts.

Overall, well balanced, but leans toward the sweet on entry. Dark fruits with some bitterness and a hint of bourbon. The alcohol is clear, though far less than 10% would suggest. The finish is lightly acidic with a hint of wheat bread.

A medium to full body with smooth texture and moderate carbonation. Alcohol is drying and this vintage 2007 is quite mellow. There is lots of residual stickiness on the lips.

This sipping beer is easily approachable with a cigar and conversation but would also work with a meal.

Large 2011 bottle.
Pours clear dark copper with a decent head.

A faint tart note along with low sweetness distinguished this from other barleywines in a tasting session.

O: Excellent but not superb in all respects.
