Our Irish-Style Extra Stout amplifies the traditional drier versions from Ireland for a bolder, black brew. The addition of both roasted barley and Dark Crystal malted barley give Extra Stout undertones of chocolate, molasses and dried fruit. The beer is generously hopped with East Kent Goldings to balance the sweetness from the malted barley.
Extra Stout is a descendent of the British and Irish porters of the 18th Century. These strong porters eventually became known as strong stout, then Foreign Stout or Extra Stout, depending on origin. Extra Stouts were exported world-wide, gaining popularity in the West Indies, Africa and parts of Asia.

Appearance: Dark brown, chocolate Goan.
Smell: Roasty.
Taste: Toasty malt, chocolate, caramel, molasses. Stays interesting throughout.
Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation.
Overall: Not your typical Irish Stout but I'll take it. Drinks easier than its 8% ABV.

Poured into a Guinness glass. Color is slightly cloudy medium brown. Fluffy tan head. Smells of sugary malt and a little hint of booze, as well as a tiny hint of hop spice. Taste is reminiscent of English porter rather than Irish stout. Not bad, but not really what I expected. The 8% ABV is also apparent with a light acidity. Very mild English hops.

Look: Black, creamy brown head
Smell: Dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt
Taste: Sweet caramel roasted malts, chocolate, some dark fruit and indistinct hop bitterness. Overall fairly sweet. Finish is somewhat bitter, with a little bit of alcohol warmth.
Feel: Medium to heavy bodied, light carbonation, creamy mouthfeel
Overall a decent stout. The sweetness overwhelms the more subtle flavors.

This is quite different than your average stout. Lots of molasses and dark fruit. Some sweetness, which is unusual. Sweet chocolate, light roasted coffee, black currants, anise, an unfortunate bubblegum flavor, sorghum and fudge all come calling. Very unique, enjoyable and sweet.
