Style: Bière de Garde

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Bière de Garde invokes the tradition of the farmhouse ales of Northern France, renowned for their subtle aromas of apricot and allspice. Four different types of malt create a toffee sweetness, while French Strisselspalt hops add a subtle spice flavor. The beer is fermented with a distinct French farmhouse ale strain, then bottle conditioned with extra sugar and yeast for at least two weeks.

Bière de Garde translates to “beer which has been kept or stored”. This traditional, artisan farmhouse ale from Northern France was brewed in early spring and stored in cold cellars for consumption in warmer months. While related to its spicier, tarter Belgian cousin Saison, Bière de Garde is a richer, sweeter beer.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep orangey color ale with a small foamy head with minimal retention and no lacing. Aroma of grainy cereal notes with quite a bit of residuals sugars. Taste is also a mess with an overload of residual sugars and some grainy cereal notes with some funny ester. Body is semi-full with medium-to-low carbonation. Incredible mess with a definite lack of attenuation.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a Duvel tulip. Moderate hand. Label on the base reads "bottled with love 3 1913".

A: Hazy, caramel-colored body with 1.5 fingers of off-white head. Ok retention. Light lacing.

S: Sweet malt with a bit of spice, honey, brown sugar. Light noble hops. Some fruit - I detect apple, tangerine/orange. Faintly floral with some touches of earthy funk.

T: Lightly sweet, fruity malt up front with development of a moderate hop bitterness. Semi-dry finish. No significant alcohol presence. Slight tang on the aftertaste.

M: Moderate carbonation with a nice moderately-full body. Nice creaminess on top. Fills nicely.

O: Pretty well balanced all around with some nice flavors/scents happening. A bit malty, a bit fruity, a bit hoppy. Solid take on the style, although the hopping feels distinctly American. Better than I remember - I feel some age has improved this one. Good stuff.

Prost!
