Our Quadrupel features notes of stone fruit from a Belgian abbey yeast strain and the taste of sweet toffee from a touch of Belgian Candi syrup. This mahogany-colored ale is fermented with a distinct Belgian abbey ale strain, then bottle conditioned with extra sugar and yeast for at least two weeks. European hops add balance to the sweetness of the malt and yeast.
In the United States, the term “Quadrupel” refers to a very strong, dark ale with a spicy, fruit flavor and high alcohol content. The beer style is intended to be stronger than a Belgian-style Tripel, so the alcohol content tends to be 10% or more. Beyond these guidelines, there is still discussion among brewers as to what constitutes a Quadrupel.

Undated large bottle that's at least 4 years old.
Poured dark red-brown with excellent clarity and a modest, semi-durable beige head.
Aroma: lightly boozy with moderately strong notes of dark dried fruits dominating.
Flavor: moderately boozy with notes of dark dried fruits dominating. Clean for style.
Feel: medium carbonation; medium-full body; smooth; warming.
Overall: this American quad is nicely balanced and harmonious. It is certainly well-crafted and seems refined but is clearly not as complex, yeasty or deep as good Belgian counterparts.

A:
Fairly clear red with tons of scummy yeast chunks and a pop-fizz cap of two inches that dwindles to an off-white film. Ok retention, not a trace of lace. (3.5)
S:
Dark fruits, rustic bread, weird caramelized cereal/molasses-rum/oxidized aroma that only comes out after a swirl, some tart barny-ness from the yeast. (3.5)
T:
Chocolate covered cherry kool-aid, wood, toffee, dark bread, broiled sugar and bourbon. (3.5)
M:
Sticky, medium carbonation, full bodied, some sneaky booze. (3.5)
O:
An okay beer.
Big and sweet. It isn't the 'quadiest' quad I've ever had. It was ok, but it felt like it was big in ways I didn't like and not big in ways I do. A lot is tastes, but it wasn't very faithful to style either. It looks mediocre. The smell is nearly what you would expect with the addition of some acetic tang, and a weirdly chewy sweetness that pops right after a swirl. It is a little bit of a chore to drink. Strong as hell. If I was sure it was fresh I would try it again, just to be sure, but otherwise I won't be having this one again. (3.25)

750 ml bottle into a goblet.
Copper colored pour, mostly clear. Small head, not much lacing. Smell brings malt, cherries, strawberries, caramel, figs, dates, plums raisins. Taste leads with malt, then figs, dates, plums, cherries, caramel. Some alcohol warming. Good body, pretty smooth, taste lingers.
A little lighter bodied than the norm, but the taste and aroma stack up well as a traditional quad. Liked it more as I drank it. Well worth a purchase.

Schlafly Quadrupel is not as complex as a Belgian quad and I would not recommend it as stand-in for, say Rochefort 10. To my palate it tastes like boozier Bass Ale sort of beer, without the same fruity, spicy elements as Belgian Trappist quads and ales. IMO the maltiness is too strong and not well balanced with the other flavors. Borders on cloying.

I bought this an hour and a half ago from Schlafly Bottleworks and poured it into what appears to be a Schlafly tulip/snifter hybrid. I like Gulden Draak 9000 a bit better because it's slightly sweeter, but this is still pretty good. Now that I know I like the style, I'll be sure to seek more quads out. It's going to be tough to beat Gulden Draak for me though.
