Style: Oatmeal Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Oatmeal Stout is a classic British-style stout brewed with flaked oatmeal and roasted barley. Freshly-roasted coffee beans, cocoa and touches of raisin and dried fruit dominate the aroma of this super dark ale. The richness of the grain blend is balanced by the nutty character of the roasted malt, the creaminess from the oatmeal flakes and a dose of hops.

Before the 19th century, all barley was malted over wood-fired kilns and the resulting dark roasted malt defined the browns, porters, and stouts of England. Near the end of the 19th century, brewers had introduced oats for their purported restorative and nourishing characteristics, producing beers such as oatmeal stout and milk stout. By the 1950’s, Oatmeal Stout had nearly trickled out of existence. Following the beer’s literary rebirth in the articles of English beer writer Michael Jackson in the 1970’s, British and American craft brewers are once again promoting the style.

6/22/17...pours dark brown, light rings of off white foam. Patches on top. Light roasted coffee nose, slight oats. Light bodied, heavy oat flavor, creamy mouthfeel. Milk chocolatey taste. Simple, tasty stout.

Had a 20 oz serving at the St. Louis airport for $8.95.

Beer poured black as night with a decent off white head on the initial pour.

Nose was mild roast and slightly sweet.

Taste was good, mild roasted malt and oat base blends quite nicely with a decent amount of presumably UK hops.

Feel was medium bodied and fairly smooth.

Overall this brew was way to easy drinking, I could get used to having this as a go to oatmeal stout. Recommended!

Typical oatmeal stout as far as color and appearance. Not as creamy or heavy a feel as some classic oatmeal stouts I've had. Flavor was real easy, not too bitter, sweet,or malty. A very enjoyable stout that I will try again

Black liquid with a small head that settles to a thin cap. Spotty lacing is left down the glass. Aroma of lightly roasted malt, chocolate, and earth. Pretty mild stout as the roast is light, not bitter, and the ABV is low. Flavors of chocolate and lightly roasted coffee. The finish comes quick and ends with some cereal notes. Light body but has a creamy texture thanks to the oats. Nice carbonation. Perfectly acceptable stout but hardly one to get excited about. Which pretty much describes Schlafly beers.

Had this on tap at Schlafly Bottleworks. Almost pitch black, with a nice rich silky feel. Had it with their pretzel and beer cheese, which was an excellent combination in my opinion. Will definitely have again.
