Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Oatmeal Stout is a classic British-style stout brewed with flaked oatmeal and roasted barley. Freshly-roasted coffee beans, cocoa and touches of raisin and dried fruit dominate the aroma of this super dark ale. The richness of the grain blend is balanced by the nutty character of the roasted malt, the creaminess from the oatmeal flakes and a dose of hops.

Before the 19th century, all barley was malted over wood-fired kilns and the resulting dark roasted malt defined the browns, porters, and stouts of England. Near the end of the 19th century, brewers had introduced oats for their purported restorative and nourishing characteristics, producing beers such as oatmeal stout and milk stout. By the 1950’s, Oatmeal Stout had nearly trickled out of existence. Following the beer’s literary rebirth in the articles of English beer writer Michael Jackson in the 1970’s, British and American craft brewers are once again promoting the style.

Enjoyable, lighter bodied oatmeal tout....lacks the creamy texture I like for this style but tastes like an old school oatmeal stout...that is the kind of oatmeal stouts I used to enjoy back 15 years ago...roasty, some dark coca, light dark fruitness. Only knock is the body but it is ok...finishes slightly with a slight unsweetened dark chocolate impression..

L- dark as a stout should be, opaque for the most part
S- Not very aromatic. A sweet flavor is clear from charcoal and strong raisin character. A little fruity, grape-like aroma is also present.
T- Strong malt sweetness with raisin flavors very strong like in the aroma. Toasted oats come through here. Malt backbone is there as it should be, however a fruity flavor (likely from hops) is more present than I would like in the aftertaste.
F- Medium to full bodied, feels like a stout but not as heavy as some.
O- Overall a good tasting stout, nice roasty character with the roasted oats but a fruity aroma and taste is stronger than I would like.

Dark brown with a tan/khaki head, typical for the type. Head durable but not especially thick. Nose a bit subdued but typical also: some caramel prominent. Taste was consistent with smell and expectations for this style but not outstanding given the number of oatmeal stouts available. Thin hoppiness - quite thin - over a caramel body, with some toasty and cola flavors. Did not grow or develop as it might, but a good solid flavor. Mouthfeel perhaps less than I expected, since oatmeal is known for adding creamy notes; this was thinner than it might be. I like oatmeal stouts and I enjoyed this beer even if it is not the most remarkable example of the type in my experience.

Bottled "08/31/15" and drank 10 Apr 2016.
