Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Oatmeal Stout is a classic British-style stout brewed with flaked oatmeal and roasted barley. Freshly-roasted coffee beans, cocoa and touches of raisin and dried fruit dominate the aroma of this super dark ale. The richness of the grain blend is balanced by the nutty character of the roasted malt, the creaminess from the oatmeal flakes and a dose of hops.

Before the 19th century, all barley was malted over wood-fired kilns and the resulting dark roasted malt defined the browns, porters, and stouts of England. Near the end of the 19th century, brewers had introduced oats for their purported restorative and nourishing characteristics, producing beers such as oatmeal stout and milk stout. By the 1950’s, Oatmeal Stout had nearly trickled out of existence. Following the beer’s literary rebirth in the articles of English beer writer Michael Jackson in the 1970’s, British and American craft brewers are once again promoting the style.

Solid, drinkable beer, that lacks the creamy sweetness of the very best oatmeal stouts. Big fan of the dry finish though.

Pours black without much head.

Smell is pretty dark fruit forward. Slight roasted malt.

Taste is like the smell. Lots of dark fruit cut with a slight burnt malt flavor.

Mouthfeel is fairly light and crisp for am oatmeal stout.

Also grabbed as a mix and match sixer. Some Schlafly products are good, some are bad. Only time and experience will tell with some of their products. Side poured with standard vigor from the bottle into a snifter.

Appearance - Pours a flat black with no head and leaves little lacing. Pretty standard fare for a stout. Exactly what I expected

Smell - Smells exactly as described on the bottle. Strong notes of coffee, raisins, cocoa, malts, and oatmeal. I'm enjoying the smell thoroughly.

Taste - Smooth cocoa and chocolate up front, with the coffee more prevalent toward the middle and rear of the drink. Roasted malts are prevalent in the drink as well. Fairly complex flavor, very enjoyable.

Mouthfeel - Finishes smooth and creamy, nice and thick. Very much what I expected out of an oatmeal stout, very good.

Overall - While this is not the best oatmeal stout I have ever had, it is certainly a quality product. I would absolutely recommend this product to anyone. Condor recommended and approved!

From a bottle to a pilsner glass.

A: pour is pitch black color with thin film in top and no lace to speak of.

S: mostly roasted malts.

T: heavy on malts and touches of coffee on the end.

M: thick almost chewy mouth feel. Very good

O: not bad. I would buy this again.

A decent drinkable stout that is non-offensive in it's delivery. This is the foundation for their coffee stout, which I love. This one by comparison still has quite a bit of flavor, but it pales next to the delicious coffee stout.
