Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Oatmeal Stout is a classic British-style stout brewed with flaked oatmeal and roasted barley. Freshly-roasted coffee beans, cocoa and touches of raisin and dried fruit dominate the aroma of this super dark ale. The richness of the grain blend is balanced by the nutty character of the roasted malt, the creaminess from the oatmeal flakes and a dose of hops.

Before the 19th century, all barley was malted over wood-fired kilns and the resulting dark roasted malt defined the browns, porters, and stouts of England. Near the end of the 19th century, brewers had introduced oats for their purported restorative and nourishing characteristics, producing beers such as oatmeal stout and milk stout. By the 1950’s, Oatmeal Stout had nearly trickled out of existence. Following the beer’s literary rebirth in the articles of English beer writer Michael Jackson in the 1970’s, British and American craft brewers are once again promoting the style.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a clear dark brown to near black and has a small tan head. The aroma is big on oatmeal with some fruit and coffee in the background. The flavor is roasted malt with hops. A real good beer.

I've only started to get into stouts and porters, so perhaps I don't know what I'm talking about here. Compared to the others I've had lately, this one so similar to some good ones (eg, Sierra Nevada's). VERY dark, nice head, decent lacing. Tasted and smelled very rich. Overall, a pleasant libation.

12 oz. bottle poured into a nonic.

A- Deep brown. Brown head retains around a half inch. Good lacing.

S- Roast, a little dark fruit. Light coffee.

T- Roast but not string. Dark chocolate. Some iron.

M- Pretty creamy, roasty, but isn't dry.

O- Only okay. Pretty mild. I'd classify this as a porter.

Black body with thick, light brown head. Smell is a little weak, but hints of chocolate, coffee and alcohol. Taste is faint coffee, more dark chocolate, slightly bitter, and some cola. Feel is mostly smooth, not overly thick, a slight bite, but no carbonation. I'm a stout guy, so I'll admit I probably rate them higher. this is a Nice one though, and I come back to it every season.

12 oz bottled with love on 02/24/2015 at 09:21 so was a bit worried in freshness. Still poured the dark black ale with a white foamy head. I consider this a classic stout, great roasted flavors, easy and pleasant to drink.

I gave this beer a higher rating than it deserved out of respect for Schlafly. I love every other beer they have produced. After the amazing smell I experienced from this beer, I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of flavor. They have the best non-barrel-aged pumpkin beer on the market, among other amazing beers that I have had the pleasure of consuming, all of which have a plethora of flavor. Honestly, I think I may have had an off batch/old beer. So do not let this beer sway you from buying anything from Schlafly, as they are an amazing brewery.
