Schlafly American IPASchlafly American IPA

Brewed by:
The Schlafly Tap Room
Missouri, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our American IPA gets its bold hop flavor from 100% American hops and its deep gold and full body from pale and crystal malted barley. A blend of Amarillo, Centennial and Simcoe hop varietals imparts AIPA with bitterness and prominent aromas of citrus and fruit. Our brewers select these hops on an annual pilgrimage to the hop farms of Pacific Northwest.

IPAs (India Pale Ales) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

This is my absolute favorite IPA! It's actually the beer that turned me on to IPAs. The fruit and citrus flavors in this beer are amazing and there is a hint of pine flavor as well.

Sampled at the Good Pie, St. Louis MO.
What a delicious suprise. An IPA unlike any I've ever had before. The hop profile is suprisingly unique...
A: Beautiful golden hue typical of an IPA
S: So pungent and delicious, typical citrusy hops, touches of pine, caramel, and mint.
T: This is where the beer shines. Great malt backbone, but the hops are unbelieveable. Minty, piney, bubblegum, fresh squeezed citrus, and a hand full of other flavors I can't quite put my finger on.
M: Typical of an IPA, wish it was just a touch more "creamy" to match that hop profile.
D: Off the charts...I could sip on this all night long.

Home Run for Schlafly. I wish this was in bottles so others across the country could get a taste of this. Well done.

Bottled on 7-5-2011, in my opinion the best batch of the year.

A: Nice golden amber color. Half an inch of white head with good lacing.

S: Citrus (grapefruit), pine, sweet malt.

T: Wonderful grapefruit taste and nice bitterness from the hops. Finishes with a smooth sweet malt backbone.

M: Medium body coats the mouth and bitterness lingers.

O: One of my favorite Schlafly releases and by far my favorite of this style. Wonderful beer.

Served from a 12oz bottle in a snifter

Appearance: Cloudy, dark golden with an orange hue and a frothy white head.

Aroma: Very nice sour citrus tones with lemon and orange peel.

Taste: Loads of citrus flavors with a strong dry grapefruit taste. I pick up a light alcohol flavor with some yeast esters in the middle and a medium hop bite in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium creamy body, with light carbonation.

Overall: This is a great single IPA. While having enough aroma and taste to keep me interested, it is simple to enough to remain very very drinkable.

Bottled on 06/29/2010. Poured into tulip. Deep, mostly clear amber with moderate beige head. Good lacing throughout. Quite hoppy on the nose - great aroma! As advertised the dry hops are met with some malt on the palate and through finish. A very well-balanced offering - and I am going out on a limb here and will call this awesome! Hope Schlafly makes this a year-round offering. SALUDE to the KINGS OF ST. LOUIS!

Very nice citrus and floral up front.

Cloudy appearance (Cask probably added to this)

Drinkable for such a cloudy hoppy beer.

Nice lingering aftertaste.

I thought it was overall very complex yet easy to drink. I could easily get a six pack down but at 7 - 7.5% it would pack a whollop. Really hope to see this as at least a seasonal offering from Schlafly.

My oh my this is an outstanding IPA. Schlafly has the Seasonal Special Release IPA twins, this one and the Tasmanian IPA. While Tasmanian is still my favorite, this one plays a very close second. I tasted this one on tap at the Bottleworks location.

While T-IPA is a very grapefruit/tropical fruit forward IPA, this one dials that flavor profile back a notch, and pushes the hops ever so slightly forward. The grapefruit/citrus flavors are still there, but seem to be more of a background flavor on this IPA twin. The fresh, floral hops come to the front and dance on your tongue. There is a slight grassiness here ( hop flavor I am not normally a fan of in other beers I have tried) that is exceptional here. I think it is the sweetness that seems to round out this flavor a bit more. All in all, an exceptional IPA that is easily near the top of my list of favorites.

This is the 2nd year the AIPA has been bottled, i have had this on-tap and cask also.

Appearance- This pours a beautiful translucent copper, with great head retention.

Smell- Schlafly has dabbled with almost every batch of this they have made with the last coming in imo as the best, great citrus, grapefruit smell.

Taste- a very nice balance of the sweet malt with the bitter and juicy hoppiness.

Mouthfeel- Is very nice and creamy but not to thick.

Overall- This is one of the best beers I have put in my mouth and when it is on cask is just amazing to me, sadly it is a seasonal release.

12 ounce bottle with bottled on date of 4/26/11. Poured into a pint glass.

Wow what an awesome beer - Schlafly has done it again. This is easily one of my favorite beers and definitely one of the best IPA's I've had. Wish they made it year round.

A - Poured a hazy dark yellow with a 1 finger head that stuck around awhile, and left nice lacing.

S - Awesome on the nose. Hops galore - with pine, citrus (grapefruit), floral and grass notes.

T & M - Very similar to the smell.. I thought last years had too much of a malt character for an IPA, and this years definitely focuses on the hops. Much improved. Lots of bittering citrus hops up front with a little bit of a sweet malt kick. Very 'juicy' and nicely carbonated. Kind of reminds me a bit of Noble Pils from Sam Adams, but I like this much better. Surprisingly smooth taste for the 7.2% ABV... I had 3 last night with no problem.

Overall - get this beer if you get a chance. It's fantastic. I am a big fan of Schlafly, and I think this is their best beer by far.

This beer comes in an attractive bottle with a green label (green for hops) and a big orange "A" - for "American"? (pale ale) or for "alpha"? It is labeled "Bottled with love on" 4-26-2011 - I hope the hops really do have preservative properties, I'd rather have my beer fresher, if possible. The color is dark golden, honey colored, ever-so-slightly hazy, and the head is modest and leaves only sparing lacing. But the nose is pure grapefruit - the juice and some rind - wonderfully citric hops. There are fruity side notes - grape and apple - but not much malt in evidence in the smell.

The taste is hop-forward, wonderful citrus with good malt balance, some toasted grain. The mid-palate is hop-dominated, and the finish is clean and bitter... and bitter... and bitter. Yummy stuff. The mouthfeel is slightly oily and sticky, the carbonation is generous and refreshing, any alcohol is well concealed.

I love a good West-Coast style citrusy IPA, and this is the genuine article... brewed in St. Louis, MO. Drinkability is as good as it gets for a 7.2% ABV brew. I'd love to have MORE, and mostly it's not gonna happen, but I *will* be looking to buy this one again. Yummy stuff. (Did I say that already? Well yeah! In fact, hell yeah!) Drinkability is excellent.

A. Golden color. A bit lighter than your avg ipa

S. smells like citrusy piney deliciousness. A little heavier on the citrus side

T. Fantastical. Reminds me of hopslam. A big hit of citrus up front with a good malt balance. Finishes with different bitter note. Complex taste.

M. Thick mouthfeel but not in a bad way. Medium carbonation.

O. This beer is a contender for a double ipa top 5. Would be a lock if not for it's low for the genre abv.

This was from the latest and final release for this year. Bottle dated 7/5/2011 hit the stores on 7/29/2011.

A: Poured a nice coppery orangish color with a finger and a half head. Decent lacing.

S: Wow what an explosion to the nose. Pine, citrus, a healthy splash of grapefruit. Just extremely vibrant and fresh

T: A really nice dose of hops not too aggressive but fresh , clean and pleasant. Tastes of pine, grapefruit and more hops
M: Perfect balance of carbonation , leaves you clean

O: This is by far the best release of this beer. If you have ever thought about getting one make sure to get one from this final bottling. Exceptional !!!

Taste : The taste is wonderful. Lots of hot bitterness lots of malt sweetness very well balanced.

Mouthfeel : medium bodied brew. Adequate carbonation.

Overall: This beer is very enjoyable. Hop heads will really love this beer. I love ipa and this 1 really delivers big beautiful flavor

A great, hoppy offering with quite a bite but smoother than its ABV would indicate. Overall, a great beer that creates its own sessionability by the end of the first pint. Thin head, great lacing, and a bready aftertaste. Would definitely look for this one again.

Hazey pale orange color with tiny head. Nose citrus strong with grapefruit, piney, and tropical fruits. Tastes grapefruit, orange peel, resin, notes of piney hops and hint of bready malt. Finish lingers on the palate. This is my favorite beer of their lineup. I get it fresh because of where I live so it's a fantastic IPA to drink when you get the chance!

Served on tap in a goblet at the brewery. The AIPA poured a very nice golden amber color. Very nice creamy white head, great retention and wonderful lacing. The aroma of this IPA is full of citrus hop and malt. This is one of the best smelling IPAS this mans nose has come across. The taste of this AIPA was awesome! Full bodied, well balanced. Grapefruit. This AIPA is bursting with citrus grapefruit flavor. Slightly sour, acidic, pine and did I say Grapefruit? Sour/Bitter/Dry Finish. Awesome Beer! Not something I would expect from a St.Louis Microbrewery. I think this one could stand up against the best of them.

This IPA pours perfectly with over two fingers thick of rocky and sticky light tan head. The body is copper in color and has a slight haze to it.

Aroma wise it is a bit piny and robust with a bready, roasty and caramel quality.

In the taste the citrusy hops attack upfront, but are almost countered by a sweet and almost tea flavor.

Overall a great IPA. Well balanced, full in body yet refreshing, and just a hint of warmth in the end.

Poured from the bottle a bright amber orange color with a big rich and frothy off-white head.

The aroma is big and hoppy with grapefruit, tropical fruits, and fresh-cut grass and green onion along with some herbal spiciness.

Tastes of fresh-cut grass, green onion, caramel malts, light citrus, and sugar. The sugar is very present in the newest bottles almost to the point of` excess.

Moderate mouthfeel with a syrupy touch and a light carbonation.

This is oh so drinkable for a somewhat bigger beer. Keep it up Schlafly.

Had this fresh at the Tap Room... Perfect!
This beer is a beautiful golden honey color with a nice white foamy head that leaves gorgeous lacing on the glass.
The smell is citrus and pine... Very crisp and fresh.
The taste is very piney and citrusy... Floral and very balanced. This is one of my favorite IPAs due to the fact that it is very well balanced and extremely drinkable. Just hoppy enough for a hophead and smoother than a hop bomb. Love it!
Another winner from Sclafly! If you can get this... Grab it! :)

Poured from bottle into pint glass, bottled on May 26.

A: Pours golden brown with a foamy finger thick head that leaves some nice lacing.

S: Hops. Fruity and citrus, not much pine in this one, but it's a nice undertone.

T: This is by far one of the best tasting IPAs that I've had. You can definitely pick out the Amarillo and Simcoe hops they use, and at 7.2% abv it's an incredibly easy drinker.

M: Full bodied with medium carbonation.

O: All in all, an exceptional IPA from an exceptional brewery. It's a shame it's only a seasonal release. If you're ever in the Midwest during summer and like IPAs be sure to pick some up.

A: I poured this beer rather aggressively and it still left little head which was surprising to me seeing this brew is under the Imperial area as far as ABV goes. The beer has a very coppery deep dark golden hue to it, and it seems to be hazy as you hold it up o the light but as i pull it away, it appears more clear. This is probably some Hop sentiment in there which is more visible under the light. The beer to me appears to be a double IPA but it is isnt of course..this is a nice looking IPA.

S: Holy Cow this smells so similar to Hop Slam it is scary! I am picking up on Pineapple, mango skin, peach, papaya and a little bit of orange zest..The sweet malts come through and the more i smell this, the more it smells like Hop Slam! Needless to say this beer smells amazing!

T:Lots and lots of hops on the very front end and then all the sudden the sweet malts and delicious tropical fruit undertones take over my palate taking them away to the place they were grown..SO hoppy and soooo sweet with some alcohol on the back end enhancing these amazing flavors. This beer tastes so much like Hop Slam and i am loving every sip of it! Fresh piney mango skin with a tad bit of meat left on it from peeling it! so delicious.

M: Medium mouth feel here nothing really special going on but that doesnt take away from the taste and aroma of this brew.

O: pick this beer up if you see it! its cheaper than Hop Slam and its very comparable! IT is an amazing IPA but it drinks similar to a DIPA, this is a fantastic beer and its one of the best i have had in a long time(since Hop Slam)..

One of my favorite Schlafly beers. Served on-tap at the Schlafly Tap Room in a nonic pint. Light amber/dark yellow body that is hazy with a two-finger white head. Decent retention and good lacing.

Great hop aroma of citrus, pine, grass. Grapefruit dominant in the citrus and just a hint of sweet malt in the background.

Excellent mix of flavors with the nice bitter hop tastes up front and the sweet caramel malt following. The flavors follow the aroma on the hop side with just a hint more orange and floral notes in the flavor. Super flavor blend for an IPA.

Medium mouthfeel with the oily hop characteristics. Very glad this is back out again this year and looking forward to enjoying this as much as possible. Highly recommend to anyone who can obtain it.

Poured on tap at Meridian Pint DC into a shaker pint glass.

A white cream off white head is poured with some very fast rising carbs in the body. Body is almost orange but mostly a dull dark yellow perhaps pale amber. Good lacing is visible while drinking, looks good to go, have to admit that body color is very interesting.

Giant fruit apricot on the nose, with peach, and a faint citrus hop bent. There's even some slight honey notes here. Fantastic.

Upon taste is a quick malt sweetness, but then that apricot takes over along with it's hop citrus notes in the palate. Great sweet fruit of apricot, peaches, with a mouthwatering finish of honey and lingering sweet without the syrupy thickness. Just a bit sweet though, could tone just down an inch.

Overall, exceptional drink here. Love the feel, nose and just great tasting brew. Goes down like nothing and so tasty.

poured into a widemouthed tulip, deep orange color, slightly hazy. thin white head, looks good.

nose is tangerines, grapefruit, lemon, pretty much a bouquet of great american hops.

big citrus hop flavor in the taste, tangerines, slight lemon rind, really delicious. tastes like sweet tangerines with just a balancing hint of bitterness. this beer really nails it. although this really reminds me of tangerines, the hop flavor is so complex. tropical and citrus fruit balanced

mouthfeel is medium bodied, not too thin. pretty drinkable. this is a great ipa. up there with sculpin and headhunter. tons of hop complexity balanced by a touch of sweetness. gotta stock up on this while it's out.

Appearance: Pours a vibrant, copper-hued gold. Good head and solid head retention. Leaves a little white rim as you drink. Really really good lacing.

Aroma: Huge and outstanding. Big tropical notes with peach and orangey type notes. Some underlying caramelly malt notes. Has that classic amarillo/simcoe nose

Taste: Very nice, but not quite at the level of the aroma. Hop flavor is again really nice. Some piney notes and plenty of that big tropical/peachy/citrusy character. Caramel malt is noticeable, but the hops are the star. Nice bitterness throughout.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Solid carbonation lifts the beer off of the palate.

Overall: Between AIPA and TIPA, I could survive off of Schlafly IPA alone.
