Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our American IPA gets its bold hop flavor from 100% American hops and its deep gold and full body from pale and crystal malted barley. A blend of Amarillo, Centennial and Simcoe hop varietals imparts AIPA with bitterness and prominent aromas of citrus and fruit. Our brewers select these hops on an annual pilgrimage to the hop farms of Pacific Northwest.

IPAs (India Pale Ales) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

A: This poured clear gold with a bit of white head.
S: It smelled like mango and pine, with some wild honey malt.
T: It tasted like pine and dank herbal hops, with some unripe mango. It had a clean bitter aftertaste.
M: It was watery with moderate carbonation. Fairly light body.
D: This was a solid west coast IPA, with simple but clean scent and taste. The body was weak, but the finish was smooth, so it was easy to drink. Enjoyable brew.

Pours a beautiful light golden color makes you want to drink it up. The nose is slightly astringent but also has a sweet and sour note with the fruity esters. Taste is a pleasant bitterness from the forefront that melds into a nice subtle malt backing while the sweetish bitterness is sustained throughout the finish. The mouthfeel is nice smooth with a low amount of carbonation.

This is a tasty beverage with the bitterness bite that has a smooth mouthfeel so its easy going, but packs a nice bite for hop heads.

On tap at the Tap Room in St. Louis. Served in a snifter.

Appearance - Deep orange. A little hazy. Nice white head. Sticky lacing. Wispy surface.

Smell - Grapefruit. Hint of tropical fruits. Some orange hops. Toasty malt.

Taste - Grapefruit hops. Much less hop complexity. Toasty malt and then a musty bitter hop finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Finishes dry with a moderate bittetness.

Overall - More impressed by this than any of the other Schlafly beers I tried today. I enjoyed this with my meal.
