Brewed by:
The Schlafly Tap Room
Missouri, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our American IPA gets its bold hop flavor from 100% American hops and its deep gold and full body from pale and crystal malted barley. A blend of Amarillo, Centennial and Simcoe hop varietals imparts AIPA with bitterness and prominent aromas of citrus and fruit. Our brewers select these hops on an annual pilgrimage to the hop farms of Pacific Northwest.

IPAs (India Pale Ales) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

12oz bottle in a stemmed tulip glass.

A- Cloudy golden-orange color. Fluffy white head, 1-plus finger, that gives up the lacing right away. Fat sticky lacing, to boot. This brew is pretty.

S- Citrus hops are prominent, if not powerful. Some caramel malt, just a touch of pine. The hop aromas are clean and citrusy, I had to look for them.

T-Juicy hops , mainly citrus, lots of grapefruit. Some pineapple, too. Sweet malt gives a nice balance. Very flavorful, strong, unlike the aroma.

M-Hop tang and tingly carbonation. Medium body. Long citrus finish, acidic, not overly bitter. A touch of malt sweetness in the back.

O- It's packed with flavor without being boozy or too sweet. That works.

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy copper color. Rocky off white foam that persists and after a little while reduces to a froth. There is no carbonation to speak of.

Smell: Very herbal with big, bold piney hops

Taste: Piney hops, apples and some kind of fruity aroma.

Mouth Feel: Medium bodied, slick and smooth with a long, hoppy finish

Overall: This was a very satisfying beer that you should enjoy over a period of time. Don't just guzzle this one down. Enjoy it.
