Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our American IPA gets its bold hop flavor from 100% American hops and its deep gold and full body from pale and crystal malted barley. A blend of Amarillo, Centennial and Simcoe hop varietals imparts AIPA with bitterness and prominent aromas of citrus and fruit. Our brewers select these hops on an annual pilgrimage to the hop farms of Pacific Northwest.

IPAs (India Pale Ales) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

Poured from 12 ox bottle into Belgian style, stemmed glass. Bottled 5/26/2016

L-Hazy orange, nice finger of bubbles that faded over a couple of minutes. Doesn't say unfiltered or bottle conditioned but definite hop or fermentation bits floating around.

S-solid, heavily hopped IPA smell. Citrus, pine and the usual suspects. Citrus is more of that bitter, rind smell than a juicy, fruity aroma. Centennial for sure!

T-follows smell with some slight, caramel sweetness to balance things out but not overdone. Pretty good drinker if not a little more simple than the competition.

F-appropriate carbonation with a bit of lingering sweetness. Pretty pleasant for a largeish IPA.

O-Not the best of the best but would buy again. I could drink this one out of the bottle and not feel too bad about it either.

My first beer from this prominent St. Louis brewer. Pours a hazy golden with wet creamy head and spotty lace. Fresh and herbal hop notes but fairly faint.

Initial balance gives way to a moderate withering of citrus and pine. Not overly strong, but spicy and flavorful. Aftertaste and texture really cooperate into an excellent finish, and you don't notice the 7.2%. Worth the wait, excellent IPA.

12 oz. bottle, bottled 3 months ago so not as fresh as I wish it were.

Orange with a finger of white head.

Citrus, pine, and mild tropical fruit on the nose.

Typical IPA flavor profile but executed very well. Grapefruit, pine, and a touch of malt. Medium bitterness but easy drinking. The bitterness doesn't linger.

Medium mouthfeel.

Overall, I really enjoyed this. Another solid offering from Schlafly. This is an IPA I could easily drink a few of despite the 7% ABV.

Appearance is a cloudy golden with quickly dissipating white foam cap. Aroma is less intense than I had hoped for, but still brings out pine and earthy notes. Taste is more malt forward and the bitterness shows up on the finish with a punch, but not overpowering. Mouthfeel has a nice creamy feel to it and the bitterness doesn’t last too Lon on the finish. Overall very good IPA but would have expected a bit more hop aroma.

Hazey pale orange color with tiny head. Nose citrus strong with grapefruit, piney, and tropical fruits. Tastes grapefruit, orange peel, resin, notes of piney hops and hint of bready malt. Finish lingers on the palate. This is my favorite beer of their lineup. I get it fresh because of where I live so it's a fantastic IPA to drink when you get the chance!

Pours an opaque, and hazy orange-yellow with a white medium-sized head. Head retention is moderately-strong, with a few rings of lacing. Aroma is very citrus forward with specific notes of lemon zest and orange peel. Additionally, resin hops and underlying malt sweetness give it a pronounced and fine aroma. The flavor is big, and opens with orange peel and resin hops. The decaying flavor gives notes of lemon zest, pine hops, and dry malts. While the flavor opens up really nice, it sorta settles in and isn't so good at the finish. Mouth feel is slightly sticky, with a hefty level of carbonation. It has a medium-thin consistency as well. Overall, it's beer that has some nice flavorful and aromatic notes, but doesn't finish well. Certainly not a bad beer, and it is on the more hearty side, but definitely not the smoothest option out there.

Served in a 12oz snifter.

Poured into a snifter.
A - Pours an opaque orange with a 1 inch head, lots of lacing.
S - Very pleasant citrus aroma.
T - Very well balanced with a little grapefruit, then malt followed by some bitterness.
M - Medium mouth feel and carbonation.
O - This is a real good AIPA. This could be a go-to beer if it was available all the time.
