Our Hefeweizen is a light, unfiltered wheat beer, often served with a wedge of lemon. Made with thirty percent American winter wheat, Hefeweizen is balanced with sweet golden malted barley and Tettnang hops from Oregon that evoke a hint of spice. The American ale yeast is subtle, but the grains take center stage and, when left in the unfiltered beer, gives it that classic cloudiness and additional body.

The German Hefeweizen (say “hay-fuh-vite-sin”) traces its history to 16th century Bavaria and eventually came to America with the wave of German immigrants in the 19th century. Although the rise of light lager beer diminished the sales of wheat beers on both sides of the Atlantic, the sale of wheat beers began to rise after WWII, especially in Southern Germany where a unique ale yeast strain fermented the beer with banana and clove esters. In the late 20th Century, the new American craft brewers sought out a lighter style to complement their beer selection and brewed Hefeweizens with the same yeast strains they used to brew their Pale Ales and Stouts.

A very pale amber color it is, this beer dispensed from a tap. Sitting in a clear pint glass, this could pass as an adjunct lager. There's a nice little white head which doesn't last long and a little glass lacing. This usually isn't a pungent style and the aroma is mildly of beer. Thankfully, this doesn't drink like a true Hefeweizen. There's almost no metallic aspect to the taste, far too often a gift from this style. The body is much more supple than most of its type. It seems to be more of a hybrid lager-Hefeweizen and it's pleasant. In this case, the wheat only seems to add another dimension to taste. It may be subtle, but it's there. Including barley malt certainly helps make this a likeable brew. There is a weird stickiness to the mouthfeel at the finish, but it's not sweet, just there. It doesn't detract from the overall.

A low haze of pale maize displays under a thin dense head.

Light toasted wheat pairs with a very, very mild phenolic spice. It's so mild that the beer in general translates more as an American wheat ale than a more traditional hefe.

The fluffy medium body crisps up before the semi-dry, lightly chewy finish. Overall semi-bitter.

I am trying this beer off the tapper at Overtime Grill in Mount Vernon, Illinois. It poured a clear golden with thin white head that is not leaving much lace. The scent had faint orange cream notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with orange cream notes. The mouthfeel was lighter in body and had good carbonation. Overall it is a good beer.

Light cloudiness over a straw colored body with a small white head and little lacing. Grassy aroma with some spicyness and summer fruit notes. Cereal grains and modest yeastiness round out the taste. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, light bodied, with a short lived finish

A letdown as the airport. The beer looks and smells very nice, but it seemed rather thin and was lacking in flavor. Some banana and bread but that’s it. Had on tap at Schlafly Taproom at Concourse E at STL.

This is the worst Hefeweizen I’ve ever tasted. Not only is it a weak beer (most Hefeweizen’s are 5%+) but this “beer” isn’t cloudy with yeast like a real Hefeweizen. On top of that it’s super fruity and makes a guy wonder how this can be called a Hefeweizen? Put an orange peel and a banana in your Busch Light and you have this beer. It’s certainly drinkable but I’m no way resembles a Hefeweizen.

Cloudy straw. Lightly aromas of wheat, bit of esters. Flavors are mild too, but pretty wheat-grainy. Bit of yeastiness. Thicker mouthfeel. Moderate-light carbonation.
