BEER INFO

Brewed by:
The Schlafly Tap Room
Missouri, United States | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

Clear, pale golden, modest fluffy white head, a bit of retention, and patchy lacing.

Not getting much from the nose. A hint of sweetness, and some faint lemony hops. Not much else. It's pleasant, just not strong.

Surprisingly there is some sweetness from the all base malt, and it balances perfectly with the light citrusy hop flavors and very mild bitterness. Not crazily complex, but it works really well.

Decent carbonation, thin side of medium body, and a vaguely bitter but quite clean finish.

This doesn't have great complexity or depth, but elements are very well balanced and play well together. Friends had said it was very good and they are correct.

Bottled 12/12

A- poured into an imperial pint. Pours a pale straw, almost yellow color, similar to a light lager. Thick and rocky white head with retention that lasts forever, leaving some lace behind

S- fresh citrus juice from the Tasmanian hops, muddled mint sprigs and a bit of oily hop resin

T- malts are quite sweet and weren't detected in the smell, however I detect no breadiness. hops are citrusy, minty and piney. The finish is dry-yet-sweet with a sharp citrus hop bitterness. ABV is hidden pretty well, just a bit of heat on the backend

M- medium body and carbonation turns to a foamy mouthfeel with a warming smooth finish

O- solid IPA, drinks like a DIPA, the malts are sweet but Tasmanian hops dominate the palate. This one is a must for citrus hop lovers.

I have heard so much about this as the cream of the local seasonals etc. Well, it does not disappoint.

Just looking at it in the glass, I was wary. Extremely pale, light straw, urine, apple juice, however you want to describe it, it is seriously light and translucent. There IS however a nice fluffy white head sitting on top that shrinks down, but still leaves little remnants of itself all over the edges, like finding clothes strewn about long after ___ has left.

Smelling this one brings together a lot of my preferred IPA characteristics. Juicy tropical citrus fruits, some solid round caramel malt backbone... now I'm getting more excited.

Then it hits your tongue.
That caramel smoothe sweetness has decided it's had enough of this party and split, and what we're left with is aggressive tropical and citrus hops. Fruity mango, tangerine, pineapple with a spicy/bitter rind/grapefruit and just a touch of coniferous hints to satiate this northwesterner... This lives up to the hype in my opinion. While this is decidedly a hopthusiasts oneirological canvas, it is crisp and smoothe on the finish, with juuust a hint of honey/caramel/can't quite put my finger on it sweet to balance things out and leave you loving life and craving more. This beer has earned the praise it has received, and I'm already lamenting the fact that I'll probably never see it again after this season (I am not staying in the midwest)

A - Pours a dark gold with a 1 inch white head. Nice lacing all the way down the glass

S - This smells delicious. Tropical and floral. Quite a bit of pineapple comes through, and a bit of citrus. But, the pineapple is really strong.

T - Taste follows the smell. Sweet and fruity. Lots of pineapple and floral notes, and slightly bitter at the back of the mouth.

M - Medium bodied, well carbonated. Pretty crisp and slightly sticky.

O - This is definitely a really good IPA. The hops create a wonderful tropical and floral aroma and taste. Would definitely drink again.

Poured from the bottle into a standard pint glass.

The beer pours a cloudy golden color with just a small amount of white head. The head fades quickly to a ring around the pour. The smell is light and hoppy with a rather strong fruity note. The hops remind me of citrus juice. Citrus peel and pine attack your tongue when you take a sip. The hops are dominant, but the malt really picks it up towards the finish. I really enjoy the hop profile of this beer. There is a lot more carbonation in this beer than I would have guessed from seeing the pour.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a lightly hazed orange-amber color with a two finger foamy white head. The head has a pretty good level of retention, fading over time to leave a great level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The smell is mainly a mix of sweet and hoppy citrus along with some tropical fruit smells. The citrus is of orange and some lemon with the hop being greatest of a grapefruit
smell. Along with the citrus and tropical aromas, there are some notes of a herbal hop as well as some notes of a floral nature.

Taste – The taste begins with a nice bready and biscuit flavor with a good level of some sweeter orange, tropical fruits and a bit of caramel. Along with these flavors there is a nice hop flavor mostly of a grassy nature, but containing a bit of pine as well. As the taste advances the caramel fades, while a bit of lemongrass comes to the tongue. The bready flavors grow stronger and are joined by a little bit of a spice and some light earthy flavors coming to the tongue. In the end a quite smooth and creamy fruit and bready moderately hopped flavor is left on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is on the average. The thick and creamy body are great for the moderate hop profile allowing all those wonderful hop flavors to really be sensed by the tongue. The average carbonation keeps it very refreshing and in combination with the very smooth body, this one is dangerously easy to drink.

Overall – This is a super flavorful, smooth and very easy drinking moderately hopped IPA. A very balanced beer with a great blend of maltiness, sweet and clean tasting hops. Very nice!!

Citrus and hops smell. Taste was similar. Light grapefruit, and a strong bitter hops. Maybe it was the citrus that brought the hops on even stronger than I would have expected. Feel wasn't too 'tangy', despite the taste, and was definitely dry. Wish I could have seen this one...Drank it from the bottle at a housewarming party. Didn't want to be the guy who asked them to dig out their boxed-up glasses. I will definitely have this one again, so I'll update the rating next time around.

Had on tap at Magnolia's in Purcellville

A - Clear gold body with a sticky white head that clings to the glass. Moderate carbonation rising from the bottom

S - Very citrusy and a nice break from the pine-forward IPA's I've been having. Canned pineapple with a good bit of grapefruit. Slightly candy sweet in the nose

T&M - Great burst of citrus hops right off the bat that is neither overly bitter nor sweet. I taste more grapefruit than pineapple but both are evident. A little mango aftertaste once swallowed. Very different flavors from most IPA's I've had which I really appreciate. I absolutely HATE grapefruit but evidently I love the taste in my beer. Very smooth mouthfeel with less than moderate carbonation. Goes down very easy. Slightly sweet taste without making the mouthfeel sticky.

O - really enjoyed trying this one. WIll buy a sixer if I see it around. Would like to compare vs having on tap.

Gold colored and slightly hazy, this beer looks very tasty. It's slightly hazy and has lots of bubbles. There is a one finger, perfectly white head that remains throughout and there is an attractive lacing.
It smells of fruit, pineapple and mango and pepper spice. The aroma is strong and I never have to work hard to pull it out which is a very nice feature.
The flavors are similar to the aromas, pineapple, pepper, and toasted bread being the one difference.
This IPA is medium bodied with hop bitterness up front followed by a slight malty sweetness and a very nice citrusy aftertaste.
This is the very beer I have had from Schlafly. Tasmanian IPA rivals some of the very best ipa's I've ever had and I would love to purchase it if it was distributed to my area. This is a top flight beer that any IPA lover should try.

Cool bottle from Claaark13. Cheers dude!

From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled 5 November 2013 at 16:11

APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, medium looking, white tan head with good retention. Perfectly clear sunglow yellow in color with no carbonation evident. Head fades to a half wisp though only a ring remains with touches of lacing down the glass. This one is too yellow; not attractive for the style.

SMELL: Strong aroma of citrus, lemon, orange peel, mango and apricot. Pineapple and grapefruit as well. Really fruity and citrusy, with light notes of honey sweetness. Label says lots of citrus and they weren't lying.

TASTE: More citrus fruits up front with honey sweetness and some herbal flavors. Apricot, pineapple, mango, orange, and citrus lemon and grapefruit bitterness at the swallow. A long and bold aftertaste is bitter with plenty of citrus fruit flavors. Fresh up front and lots of flavorful fruit and bitterness after the swallow, though a touch more malty sweetness would make it perfect.

PALATE: Medium body, light on the palate, with medium levels of carbonation. Creamy enough, goes down smooth and finishes quite dry. Some bitterness lingers.

OVERALL: This one showcases lots of citrus hops, fruit flavors and some impressive bitterness as well. The nose is great and the flavor is lovely, though it lacks some caramel-sweet malt flavor up front and sweetness on the finish for me. Wonderful hops here, but the malt is lacking, which was evident by the lack of color here. Still, an awesome beer that I was happy to try. Cheers claaark13. Always a pleasure.

Pours a hazy golden yellow with an inch or so of thin head that dissipates rather quick. Taste is pleasant and citrusy with less bitterness than expected. Overall very good and probably slightly superior to Sierra Nevada's Boomerang IPA, which uses the same Australian hops (although Boomerang is still pretty darn good).

While this beer has a fair amount of hoppiness to it, it doesn't overwhelm the palate. A very tasty and refreshing beer that I enjoyed. It wasn't super fresh (a month old), so it would probably be even better (at least for hop heads) than it was. Still, I enjoyed the unique Tasmanian hop flavors and would certainly drink this again.

A nice golden orange pour with a sweet citrus hoppy smell.

Good change for an IPA. There is a big citrus taste with some fruit seetness that come out and overshadow the hops which kick in more at the end to give a bitter crispness. While not not breaking into my top 5 IPA's this one is high up the list. Not exactly a fair competition due to it's uniqueness. I just wish this beer came out in spring or summer.

On tap at Mahaffey's (from notes).

A: Translucent blonde with a light head and a bit of lacing.

S: Excellent. All hops, mainly citrus.

T: Top notch IPA. Interesting profile. Different citrus and pine combo. Quite sweet with minimal aftertaste.

M: Prickly. Lots of tiny bubbles. Coarse.

O: Love the Galaxy hops in this.

Poured this into a standard pint glass and the brew makes a good two finger thick bright white head, with a cleanly filtered body that is a golden white color. Looks kind of like a Kristalweizen.

The aroma is very citrus in the way of lemonade... Almost smells like a Shandy. There is some pine, but almost smells like Sprite altogether with odd soapy fragrances.

Taste wise it's grainy huskiness with some lemon, and a hint of caramel.

Oddly feels medium in body, which makes this 7.2% a sleeper and can creep on you very stealthily.

This is my favorite beer from the schlafly family to date. Pours a milky light golden hue with heavy frothy head. Notes of light hops and heavy citrus on the nose. The beer is smooth on the palate, balanced with citrus, light hop and some earth. I would have desired a stronger hop bite especially on the finish. A solid keeper

The head was a thick beauty with a tight knit foam that set to a crust on top. The bodies color was golden and clear with loads of bubbling.

The aromas are creamy, almost a vanilla lacing, with a balance of floral and citrus hops. The scent has a Pina Colada like mixture of pineapple and coconut with some leafy, piney hop aroma. The malt scent has a cardboardish aroma but that is not bad only what I can describe it with.

The flavors are a mixed bag of creamy pineapple, coconut and tropical fruit with an alcohol laced pine, caramelized nut, bran and flower taste. What I find most alluring about this is that as I drink it I keep finding fleeting New tastes that disappear so quickly I can't find the words to describe them.

The feel is easy and crisp but a light astringency seems to pull at the tongue. Otherwise this is quite remarkable.

This beer was bottled on the 9th of September and is fairly mature for an IPA but given its prior reviews I decided to give it a try since there are indications it lasts fairly well.

The beer pours out into a Duvel glass a lightly hazed apricot color with a 1" fluffy white head that slut sowly but visibly recedes to an irregular patch of foam and and thin cover on the rest of the liquid. As it recedes it leaves a heavy pattern of lacing. Sipping leaves some scattered long slender legs of lacing.

The aromas include some pineapple, what seems to be mango and some citric orange zest with a touch of hop resin floating around in there.

The flavors are much as expected from the nose with the pineapple, mango and orange zest. In addition the moderate amount of resinous bitterness stands out more than it did as one of the aromas.

The mouth feel is medium bodied and both smooth and prickly with some light gentle carbonation. The finish is medium length and begins as the tropical fruit flavors begin to disappear followed by the orange zest leaving the resinous bitterness to slowly disappear as the palate goes dryer and dryer to invite the next sip.

Overall I thought this was a well made beer that I've enjoyed giving a try. Since this is a fall release I doubt I'll be picking up any more this year. I will, however, be putting it on my list to get some of in the Fall next year when it is a bit younger. However, I suspect this is an IPA that ages gracefully as I certainly have no complaints about the aromas and flavors.

Pours hazed golden yellow with a thin head that settles and stays. Lacing sticks.

The smell is of citrus - grapefruit and orange/tangerine.

The taste is of juicy grapefruit backed by a cracker-like bread. Bitter bite in the finish. Alcohol is very well-covered.

It has a firm medium body, that could be chewier, but I'm more than satisfied with it.

A juicy, citric, well-hopped IPA!

This is a completely clear, golden brew. The head is white and frothy, tall, and lasting. Fresh hop smell...pine, wood, wine-casks, and a distant malt. Flavorful. Hops, bitterness and great balance. Not much warming for the ABV. The body is full and firm. Nice, clean, and very, very hoppy. Great brew.

Great top beer from great brewer now available in NY-NJ.

A: Pours a clear yellow, bright amber color with a frothy head that leaves a plentiful dotty pattern.

S: Bright like a west coaster. Bright herbal, lemon, pineapple and grassy tones, like a California IPA.

T: Starts a bit bready, English legacy, w hops asserting very ripe pineapple, lemon, passion fruit and a grassy, California trail tone. great finish.

F: Medium body with moderate carbonation, with long drawn finish.

O: Fruity and herbal and big in the California way, but bready, European strain as well - even a Germanic influence. A unique IPA

Great schlafly offering overall… Doesn't drink like a triple IPA. A lot of fruit and citrus character here with a nice smooth finish you would not expect from a triple IPA. Good stuff! Will track down again for sure!

Bottle: Poured an orangey color ale with a rather large foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of fruity and tropical hoppy notes with some light sweet notes. Taste is also dominated by some nice tropical and fruity notes with some light residual sugar notes. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Solid use of hops form down –under countries.

L: Bright gold/straw color with a slightly orange core. Lasting, fluffy head and strong lacing. Lots of little suspended particles.
S: Sweet candy / citrus (especially grapefruit). Tangerine
T: Bitter, not as much fruit presence. Strong malt backbone. Grassy herbal hop flavors.
F: Great balance. Not too effervescent, not too thick and oily. Slightly "chewy"
O: Very good beer. Was surprised by the tropical fruit aroma. Not overly bitter or acidic. Easy drinking.
