Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

I didn't give this a perfect rating, but this is honestly one of my favorite beers ever. Like I look for ward to it coming out every year. That being said, some years are better than others. 2016 was not that great (it had too much of that kinda cat pee thing on the nose, tasted great though). The 2017 version was far better. It has this real light amber tone to it, and I think it presents well with some haze in the glass. I always kinda pick up a bit of that cat pee smell, but this year wasn't as bad as some years. More of a fruity, funky nose. Not totally pleasant but not a turn off either. It drinks well at 7.2, and gives off some real serious fruity notes on the tongue: citrus is really prominent, but I also get loads of mango and even pineapple. I guess lots of folks are doing similar beers now, but this is one the first to do the Oceanic hop build. Kinda cool to get those notes from a beer that isn't fruited. If you can get it fresh, jump on it because this is literally the best thing Schlafly brews every year

12oz bottled 12/6/17 (48 days old) poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 7.2% ABV 65 IBU per label. The beer pours Hefe hazy golden yellow with abundant and sticky off white head. Retention and lacing are far above average. The aroma offers a glimpse of citrus and a little earth. The taste is a hint of semisweet caramel malt followed by some vague citrus, tropical fruit and earth with a pleasant medium bitter finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, adequately carbonated, dry and a little sharp on the tongue. Overall, very good. Worth grabbing a 6 pack if you find it fresh.

It's hard to judge this beer fairly since the bottle I got was 11 months old and usually for an IPA this means that the beer is simple done. However, this is still very much hoppy and kicking. Not sure whether it's because of the Tasmanian hops or something else but this beer drinks like a fresh IPA. It pours hazy and with a small head. The aroma is of citrus and some lemongrass. In many ways it reminds me of beers with Sorachi Ace hops. Very nicely balanced taste, with a prolonged bitterness and a chewable mouthfeel. I can't imagine how much better this beer must be fresh.

12 oz bottle from Siglers in Chattanooga with a Dec. 2016 bottling date.
With a clear yellow-golden body and visible carbonation, this looks like a pilsner. The white head is somewhat weak but leaves fine lacing on the glass.

Moderately bitter and aromatic for style. Complex hoppy flavor with faint malts. Tropical fruits dominate with a hint of pineapple. Lingering but mild aftertaste of Tasmanian hops.
Medium body and medium carbonation.

This is another one of those past-dated deals I got at my local liquor store a while back for at least half the normal retail price. It was a really interesting citrusy hop tasting beer. Pretty good stuff.

Look: Pours a hazy, golden yellow color with a two finger head of off white, coarse foam.

Aroma: Waxy. . . has an almost bitter scented candle like aroma. Notes of dry, slightly ashy tangerine and orange rind with hints of grapefruit and mild pine. The aroma is rather arid and faintly musky.

Taste: Again, very waxy floral and oily- almost ashy. Like what you would get from chewing on the peel of a grapefruit or tangerine, but not necessarily in a bad way. There is a gentle orange juice and sweet pine resin flavor lurking somewhere but it takes a back seat to the initial flavors. Ends on more notes of dried tropical fruit peels and candle wax.

Feel: Well attenuated, dry, juicy and somewhat floral. Alcohol is detectable but not overtly so.

Overall: This was pretty "meh" in my opinion. The most memorable part of this beer were it's negative traits; the fact that it straight up tasted like dried fruit rind and potpourri with an ashy, waxy aftertaste. Wouldn't repurchase.

An ombré body of hazy shades of gold, with a thin, yet frothy pure white head.

The aroma is a light, yet pleasant combination of pineapple, grapefruit, and some resinous hops. A yeasty underlayer has a bit of a funky lactose quality, but it's intriguing rather than off-putting.

Fresh grassy hops in the beginning blend seamlessly into smoky, damp earthiness in the finish. Reminiscent of pine nuts. A squeeze of lemon and a pinch of black pepper keep things bright and lively, while a low key foundation of toasted malt brings everything into balance. Medium hop bitterness. I didn't taste any of the pineapple promised by the label and the aroma, but I didn't feel that particular flavor would have hives with the rest of the recipe.

The medium viscosity is lightened by heavy carbonation. A moderately dry finish, with a bit of peppery heat which lingers past the swallow.

A truly unique combo of citrus, spice, and earth make this beer one-of-a-kind. Its off-kilter quality makes it hard to compare to other IPAs. It's not the most scrumptious beer in the world, but it's well balanced for its complexity, and is a fun experience to ponder.

Golden yellow color. Aromas of grapefruit, pine, and maybe even peach. Has a bit of a bite to it. This beer strikes a wonderful balance between the hops and the fruit, with notes of grapefruit and other citrus fruits prominent. Changes from bitter to sweet on the palate, with a delayed finish that is a bit earthy and leaves an almost velvety feel in your mouth. The finish reminds me of rooibos tea. Marvelous IPA, with all the complexities of a Schlafly. Each sip I take, I notice something new.

Bottled 11/04/16, bought on sale at The Keg, Clarksville IN for $8.99.

A: Pours cloudy light gold, like a wheat. Half inch head. Lacing continues as I drink. Bubbly enough.

S: Grass, lemon, floral. Nothing strong but nothing foul. Clean nose.

T: This has died in the bottle. And I read the other reviews to decide that, because reviews helped me choose this beer. Light floral, light lemon, light pineapple. Hint of lemon zest and light resin hit, followed by light bitterness. Some malt on the end. I have a feeling this would be a lot better fresh, so I won't knock it too much.

M: Carbonation is below medium. Dry finish with light oil.

O: I really think this died in the bottle. Would like to try some fresh, as there is some potential here that I think wasted away; if I ever do get some fresh I will write a new review. Here is the weird thing: I don't think this works as a Fall release. This tastes like a good hot summer day and grilling beer, what it has become in this bottle is like a decent wheat beer. Strange. Good effort. Will try to get some fresher later this year, because I think there is something really good in here, it just died.
