Found at Moscow's best beer kiosk, this 33cl green bottle has a yellow and green label featuring a tree in the seal above the name. Don't see any reason to call this a bock, but whatever. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 2/10/06, I opened it on 9/10/05.
Pours clear gold under a 1.5 finger white head that seems thin at first, but adds some contour as it fades fairly slowly, leaving just a touch of lace. A slightly skunky hops nose is framed by a bit of sweet malt. The mouth is standard light and prickly. A touch of sweet bready grain opens, chased quickly by strong metallic hoppy bitterness. There are shades of espresso, but it is not really dry. There's not much aftertaste - just a quick hint of spice and a bit of bitter at the back of the throat. It's OK, but hardly remarkable.

Less sweet and less malty than Helles from Germany. Surprisingly hoppy yet still very easy drinking.

Pours a clear yellow with fine head.
Smell is light and crisp with some floral, crackery and citrusy hints.
Taste is light with some crackeriness and floral hints. A bit skunky but pretty crisp, with a light bitterness.
Mouthfeel is thin to medium, well carbonated.
Overall, a very inoffensive Helles.

500ml can purchased from Ontario Beer Store. I enjoyed this one, and will definitely seek it out again. A great summer refresher and went down easy. Slightly bready but no overwhelming malt flavours. Fluffy head off the pour that took some time to disappear and left some lacing on the glass. Mild carbonation. Good stuff.

500 mL can from the LCBO; best before Mar 21 2020 and served barely chilled. It's a rare but welcome sight to see a 'new' Austrian beer on the shelves, even if it's merely another industrial lager.
Pours clear and effervescent, with a pale yellow-hued body that is initially topped with nearly an inch of foamy white head. It recedes within a matter of minutes, leaving behind an embossed coat of delicate, even lacing; a filmy-thin cap and modest collar also continue to stick around. Nothing out of the ordinary on the nose, which is about as straightforward as it gets - grainy pale barley malts are the main feature, helped along by hints of hay and bready sweetness, with a very faint hint of earthiness.
A decent, serviceable Helles lager. It's got a grainy flavour profile with some bready sweetness, accented by notes of grassy hay and mildly earthy noble hop bitterness towards the back end. Relatively neutral aftertaste - not exactly dry, but there's minimal lingering malt sweetness. Light in body, with average carbonation levels that provide an appropriate amount of crispness to this German lager. Very easy to toss back, which is a virtual necessity for this style.
Final Grade: 3.63, a B grade. Ottakringer Helles gets the job done, but it's a long way from the pinnacle of its style. I drink a lot of Hofbräu Original these days, and while I wouldn't say that this particular helles is as good as that one, I still like it, and it's definitely a fair bit cheaper. I'll return to this beer sooner rather than later, assuming it remains in stock. If you're looking for comparable offerings (in terms of flavour, quality and price point), Hacker-Pschorr's Munich Gold comes to mind, as does Spaten's helles lager.

Nothing spectacular about this Helles.
Straw yello, with minimal head.
Smelled bready, nice.
Tasted a bit bitter, which was OK, but no crisp, refreshing finish like I enjoy with the style.
Overall, I'd go with Benediktiner.

500 ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase fro around $2.65 CDN.
Appearance - Great clear golden straw color, lots of bubbles, close to a full finger of moderately-lived white head on top. No lacing to speak of.
Smell - Lots of grainy notes, grassy with a subtle purfumey bit.
Taste - Initially sweet, then some bitterness rings in and finishes a touch spicy.
Mouthfeel - Well carbonated, reasonably light bodied very easy to drink. Maybe a touch gassy.
Overall - Decent if unspectacular Helles that hits the spot. Wouldn't rush out to suggest it, but certainly better than most Macro swill by a longshot.
