On Tap at Figmueller

Thin-to-medium white head that stayed with the beer throughout, the beer was a clear golden yellow.

Sweet aroma, similar to other Helles that I have had.

A light honey flavor, followed by a bready flavor. It's a strange description, but this beer just tastes like Central Europe to me.

Medium bodied that thinly coats the mouth.

Overall, a great beer that went well with a Wiener schnitzel at dinner, as well as a hot dog crammed into a boll while walking the street of Vienna. Would love to be able to get my hands on this here in the States.

A really bad helles. This is as bad as they come. Real flat, bland, and even a bit sticky and rough. Really boring. I can't say too much about this one. I was expecting something just that bit better. It is very rare to find new beers to try in Sydney, and its really dissapointing when you try new beers that taste like this. Dissapointing.

Ottakringer Brauerei AG "Ottakringer Helles"
,5l can, "Best before end: 03/18" and sampled in 09/17
,99€ @ Turmöl Tankstelle, Salzburg, AT

Look: Crystal clear golden body beneath a full head of fluffy bright white foam that holds well and leaves better than average lacing.
Smell: Limited aroma of sweetish malt with just a hint of floral hops.
Taste: Sweetish malt that's fuller than the aroma suggests with some floral and very lightly herbal hops. It's balanced by a moderate bitterness, and while still sweetish upfront, it does dry in the finish. Some minor floral hops linger shortly.
Feel: Light-medium in body and gently crisp.
Overall: A pleasant and easy to drink helles that's lighter than some in many ways but also nicely balanced. Quaffable.

A: Solid pee yellow. Not much of a head.

S: Slightly sweet and malty.

T: A bit soapy, fruity, sweet, malty.

M: Lightish for a lager. Smooth. Not so much carbonation. Quite ok.

D: Quite drinkable, light and you can drink a lot of it. Overall decent.

Ottakringer Helles: Imported in a friend’s carry on bag right from Austria, in a half liter can. Pours a pale yellow, with a bright white head, kind of soap foamy. Bit of skunk in the aroma, not too much else. The taste is what you’d expect from a macro-euro lager: slight skunk taste, weak grainy adjunct taste. Extremely light bodied, and very easy to drink. Not a lot of taste, very clean aftertaste. Do not bother going to Viena to pick one up.

Pours a clear yellow color with a small top off white head that disolves rapidly, leaves some decent lacings on the glass. Aroma is sweet with light malts and grains. The flavour is close to the aroma, sweet with malts in the back and a slightly bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel is clean, but flat and lacks a little crispness. Medium carbonated with light body.
It is refreshing and goes down easy so all in all is a decent enough helles, but is nothing very exiting about it, and you find better examples off this style.

Had to re-review this beer after a few years to appreciate its goodness.
It is pale, yellow like straw in color and has a mild smell, it brings pleasure in its taste: it is said to be a German style pale lager but somehow similar to an American - without the Adjunct: and this is the good part! The smooth and pleasant taste is achieved without any corn or rice and the quality of the beer is great! Clean, crisp in its taste, has more carbonation than usual but just enough to keep the beer taste good and refreshing to drink. Smooth in its taste and is almost without any bitterness.
Easy, smooth, refreshing and good to drink: as good as simple this may get. Much better than any of the Germans.

Found at Moscow's best beer kiosk, this 33cl green bottle has a yellow and green label featuring a tree in the seal above the name. Don't see any reason to call this a bock, but whatever. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 2/10/06, I opened it on 9/10/05.

Pours clear gold under a 1.5 finger white head that seems thin at first, but adds some contour as it fades fairly slowly, leaving just a touch of lace. A slightly skunky hops nose is framed by a bit of sweet malt. The mouth is standard light and prickly. A touch of sweet bready grain opens, chased quickly by strong metallic hoppy bitterness. There are shades of espresso, but it is not really dry. There's not much aftertaste - just a quick hint of spice and a bit of bitter at the back of the throat. It's OK, but hardly remarkable.
