Ottakringer is best known (for me) as a maker of light lagers, so I was quite surprised when I tried their Vienna Lager! Let alone its rich, full golden amber color, it is quite different from all the rest. No smell nor taste of any yeasts, instead rich malts and hops prevail. Reminds me - without any exaggeration - of Fuller's London Pride, a smooth and rich ale! And yes, to the very last drop it tastes very similar to an ale, though might be a little lighter but as full bodied and as rich as its English counterpart.
I was indeed very impressed with this beer, surprised what hidden treasures one might find.

Can & on tap - This is one of my staple go-to lagers. I love Vienna lagers when ever I can find a true representative offering, I load up the fridge. This is a commercial import that is a high quality well brewed rendition of Anton Dreher's copper red elixir. Pours a reddish-orange lightly protein-hazed lager in the glass with a decent rocky white cap. Aroma of toasty malts and hop floral tones underneath a pungent dextrin sharpness - medium bodied for a lager with a solid malt spine yet delicate on the palate with herbal hopping creating a number of flavor amalgams - clan increasingly dry bittering finish - a fine example of the style - probably the benchmark. Prosit!

Ottakringer claims to be "the original Vienna Lager" - a supposed fact that I've only ever read on their label. Books and beer writers often cite the name Anton Dreher but never associated him with the brewery at Wien-Ottakring. Online reviews are few and very poor. Still, this family-owned operation has been brewing at their Viennese facility since 1837...

I'm less concerned with who first developed the Vienna Lager and more interested in who currently makes the best. And this one's pretty darn good! The clear, orange-tinged golden complexion is good and adhering to the Reinheitsgebot has ensured a clean, somewhat toasty, bready-rich (but not sweet) aromatic character that showcases high quality base malts.

Mindful brewing techniques - including a proper lagering time - are also contributing factors to that soft, elegant, yet satiating malt complexity. The hint of spice in an otherwise clean aroma hints perhaps at whole flower Saaz, a suspicion only reinforced by the short-lived but appreciably earthy bitterness on the finish. The balance is a thing of beauty.

I always find it easy to enjoy beers like this on their own but it's certainly got the crispness and carbonation as well as subtle malty sweetness to pair well with traditional Viennese dishes like schnitzel or pork roast respectively. Hey, what grows together typically goes together - and there's no sense fighting over a hundred years of history on this one.

While I can't validate any of historic claims, I can vouch that on technical merit and stylistic accuracy, Ottakringer's Wiener Original is a very fine Vienna Lager indeed. It's got fantastic drinkability and that ultra-clean, lightly toasted, subtly rich maltiness provides a lot of flavour, even if it's not the amped-up, heavily distorted level North American palates are used to.

500ml can, day 11 of the Costco Canada 2014 Beer Advent calendar.

This beer pours a clear, glassy medium golden amber hue, with a fistful of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly eggshell white head, which leaves some stellar layered bike chain lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.

It smells of bready, doughy pale malt, white chalk, tea biscuits, a faint gas station whiff, and prominent weedy, grassy, and leafy hops. The taste is grainy, bready pale malt, a touch of caramel sweetness, oily nuts, muddled drupe orchard fruit, mild clammy yeast, and lesser earthy, weedy, and grassy hops.

The carbonation is fairly alive and kicking with its good to go frothiness, the body on the light side of medium weight, and generally smooth, a slight airy creaminess always at the periphery. It finishes off-dry, the underwhelmingly biscuity pale and caramel malt sweetness starting to curb stomp the lingering noble hops.

Not a bad brew, easy to drink, with no off-flavours whatsoever - sorry that I'm approaching this from the negative, or at least middle ground, as so far, this Advent calendar has been a whole lot of the same blah. Here, it branches out a little, with a decent version of the style - nothing to write home about, especially in this crazy busy season, but simple, and adequately enjoyable.

on tap at bar hop brewco. surpringly well malty Vienna. vg for style, and complex malting going toward old ale. Very good drinkability. Slight reddish tinge.

The Ottakringer is ok. The beer poured from a 0.5L can to a clear golden color with thin white head that is leaving a slight lacing. The scent is carries faint biscuit and tin. The taste is stale yeast with slight metallic twang. The body is light....good carbonation.

Almost clear deep golden color with with some off-white foam. Aroma has fresh baked bread crust, toasted malt and a hint of honey. Taste is quite bland. The toasted malt is present, slightly sweet at first, some bitterness on the finish but also cardboard. Medium body with medium plus carbonation. The aroma was nice but the rest not so much.

Pours a clear amber color with a decent top of white creamy head and lacings on the side of the glass. The aroma is off toasted bread, caramel, grass and grains with some spices. The taste is sweet with malts in the back, the finish is medium bitter with a metalic feel as well. not the best balance in the flavours, especially in the finish and the aftertaste. Medium carbonated with a medium body. creamy but a little watery in the mouth. All in all i was not that impressed. The look and the aroma was good, the rest so so.

Bottle from Pennymarkt. Pours a sparkling, dark amber with a small white head that quickly faded in a tulip glass. Aroma of caramel and hay, some alcohol shining through. Taste is sweet with a light bitterness and salt. Dominant malt, a bit watery, but not thin. Nice, refreshing. It’s a bit fizzy. If this is their new staple - then Go Ottakringer! It’s nothing special, but a nice and refreshing lager that goes down nice and easy. Probably what they aim for.

White disappearing head, crystal clear light amber.
Aroma of the used malts: Vienna and Melanoidin.
Taste follows nose plus little dry and some hop bitter and metallic
light and fizzy
Overall a decent refreshing Vienna lager from the city's biggest brewery. It is good that this style made it back home. However, could be improved.
