Ottakringer Brauerei AG "Ottakringer Gold Fassl Pils"
,5L for €4,50 on tap @ Cafe Diglas, Wien

Notes: Clear deep gold body beneath a pillow of creamy white. Head retention and lacing are good, although I suspect the lacing could be better and I have a less than "beer clean" glass. Aroma: mainly malty, infused with spicy noble hops. Flavor: Lightly caramel-tinted malt with a sweetish edge upfront. Floral, mildly herbal and spicy hops appear across the middle, and then soften in the finish, fading away as the residual malt rises. Only moderately bitter but still dry in the finish. Medium-light in body with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation.

.5L emptied into a Pokal.

A: Pours a light amber with a solid 2 finger head which is slow to receed to a trace ring. Sticky lace stays close to the top, leaving it's tracings on the upper third of the glass.

S: The smell is grassy sweet, with just a hint of skunk.

M: Crisp, very little carbonation, surprising, given the copious head and lace.

T: The Saaz hops dominate, lending an earthy resonance to the taste. There is a slightly bitter aftertaste which lingers long after this beer is gone.

D: This is quite similar to Pilsner Urquell, with the same strong hop presence. One of the better choices from the Ottakring Brewery. I could see myself spending another evening with a few of these.

A: A nice tan, which suggested that this might be a Vienna lager, but no such luck! A very stiff, two inches of white foamy head. Poured from the tap at the Mini restaurant in Vienna, which admittedly specializes in wine.

S: The smell is a little off-putting, like many Euro lagers. Not enough hop aroma.

M: Good body and mild carbonation.

T: I tried to convince myself that there was little toastiness but overall a reasonable malt and hop combination, just not that impressive.

O: Why is it so hard to get a Vienna lager in Vienna! I never got anything as good as Devil's Backbone or Blue Point's contributions to the genre, for instance. But a least I got to take a subway with the same destination as the brewery name; that added to the experience some.

Brewed under license in Hungary.

The colour is signal yellow; the big white head slowly sinks down to a firm uneven finger thick head leaving lots of lacing.

The smell is balanced with both sweet malt and bitter hops. There is a note of herbs and rye bread as well as some sweet citric notes (mandarins, oranges).

The taste is much sweeter than I had expected. Together with the medium-bitter hops and a fruity flavour, it tastes a little bit like cheap orange juice. Odd. There is a note of French loaf, and some non-bitter herbs. The aftertaste got those citric notes as well, but there is a mature note too, almost like it was stored in wooden casks. The bitterness in the aftertaste is low. The “2½” should be interpreted as “Interesting (3) yet unbalanced (2)”

The carbonation is a little bit below average, making it highly drinkable.

A Hungarian lager with a twist (of orange). I have had better ones.
