So there’s this bar that’s become a staple of my Tuesday nights. It’s called The Whig and they offer 50 cent tacos made by a black guy who supposedly has a master’s degree in art. I’m not sure if the degree helps or not, but the man does assemble a delicious taco. The Whig also serves a fair selection of bottled beer, and was recently advertising this Maisel’s Weisse. First time I’ve seen it anywhere... I believe it just arrived in SC. Here you have me reviewing it at home on a hot night. (Is there any other kind in my city? But I digress.)

So anyway it pours into my 22oz Weizen glass an amber-honey color, with a dense white head and some yeast globs that fall to the bottom. Cloudy but not overly so. Head leaves no lacing as the beer is drunk.

Smells malty and yeasty, with the required banana-spice notes present. Not overwhelming though. Wheaty and safe smelling.

A long draught (I love that word) yields an impressively creamy, spicy wheat beer. Not as complex or forward as some other Weizens I’ve had, this one emphasizes a full mouthfeel and boasts a mellow, wheaty, banana taste with a mild bitter and sour finish. Not much in the way of hops, but nor should there be. The clove and spice flavors are a bit muted compared to, say, Wiestephaner’s offering, but still present. Actually one could call it “well balanced” and be pretty correct too. All in all, a hearty, warming and pleasant beer.

Mouthfeel is creamy and full, with a nice carbonation level. Warms the throat and leaves a dry, mildly sour apple taste behind.

While not a stunning beer, Maisel’s Weisse is a solid one, and if you enjoy the Hefe Wiezens, you certainly should seek it out. I suppose the highest praise I can give is that even though I’m not a huge fan of the Hefe style, I still enjoyed this one quite a bit.

One of the betters Hefe brewed in Germany. Not to be bought everywhere, but if you spot it, go for it.

Nice taste, not too heavy, not too light, but still full bodied.

One of my favourites among Hefe.

Maisel's Weisse has quickly become one of my favourite beers. After tasting it in Germany a couple of years ago, I hadn't been able to find a supplier back home in Scotland. However last week I discovered a fantastic bar that stocks the beer. After a couple of bottles I had re-discovered my love for the beer from back in Germany.

The beer was poured from a 500ml bottle into a weizen glass.

- Despite being a white beer, Maisel's Weisse pours a slightly darker, more amber colour than most other beers found in this category. Cloudy, with a thin white head.

- Very inviting and complex, however not overpowering. Quite fruity with a malty, wheaty note.

- Delicious! It was quite yeasty and sweet with a lovely wheat malt finish. I was getting slight hints of banana. It does taste slightly different to most other beers of it's kind. There was something slightly sweeter which I can't quite put my finger on. One of the things I love about this beer is that it's one of those ones where the different smells and tastes gradually appear. You might not taste the very slight hint of biscuity banana at first, but maybe after a few sips you will. It also has a very pleasant, rewarding aftertaste.

- Quite crisp and easy going. Very refreshing.

- Very drinkable. Perfect for a warm summer night (or day!). You should always have a few of these in the fridge.

One of the best beers around! Quite hard to find on the high street but you can get it online and may even be lucky enough to find a good bar near you!

1 pint .9 oz bottle served into a half liter Kapuziner weiss glass, this pours a cloudy honey amber body with a large almond hued head. Good retention and lots of clingy patch lace on the glass. Aroma is mostly citrusy lemon and yeast, with notes of coriander and overripe banana in the background. Mouthfeel is creamy and well carbonated, with a solid medium body. Excellent mouthfeel for the style. Taste features bready sweet wheat, lemony citrus, understated spicy clove and coriander, overripe banana, and a strong yeast presence. Very tasty Hefe. A nice rendition of the classic German style that is very drinkable and refreshing.

Pours cloudy browish-peach, some yeasy sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Lifts a respectable white head, which settles to a ring and left a small bit of lacing. Bready, yeasty nose. Spicy and a bit tart, not the usual taste profile for a german wheat. Still a pleasant summer quaffer. Not up the world class standards of some of the other germans, but still worth a try.

For some reason, I love the cloudy appearance of this beer. A beautiful light copper color in appearance with a very nice head that really lingers. Fragrant, citrus-like aroma. Good mouthfeel and very tasty. This is a beer that is really easy to drink and I will definitely have to keep a bottle or two in the fridge.

Appearance: Cloudy orange godlden copper tone for the body with a very fluffy highly carbonated orange tinted cream hue for the head leaves speckled lacing not bad. Aroma: Some ripened apple notes along with the sharp spritzy malted wheat sweetness, very pleasant I am feeling a vibe with the apple note. Taste: Creamy sweetness very nice slight chalkiness blended with a suprising bitterness of hoppage not bad. Overall a bit bready but the sweet tones prevail making this a very flavorful Weiss, not bad at all. Mouthfeel: Creamy and high carbonation I like the combonation this wheat presents. Drinkability: I'm not too keen on this style of a weizen for pure drinkability but I do find it interesting.

11.2 oz bottle. Deep amber body with a durable, creamy head and excellent lacing. Flavorful, with moderate levels of banana and yeast/spice over a good wheat base.

A bit darker than your usual wessbier. Abundant froth as typical of the style. The nose is very distinct: spicy and bready with a dominant "olive" note. Not very complex though and I am not immediately getting the banana and bubblegum. The taste follows on these notes with a dominant bread taste. Very fizzy, as expected. Nothing exceptional but not bad either.

An excellent weizen bier, nice flavour, smooth and well rounded, not as good as weihenstephaner, but still very nice.
