What’s this?!? A Weizen I haven’t reviewed yet! How can this be possible!?! Etc, etc… So yeah, without acknowledging the fact that there are probably thousands of different Hefeweizens from Germany alone that I haven’t reviewed, it still comes as somewhat of a shock when I come across a new Weizen I’ve yet to quench my thirst with given my passion for the style. So what we know about Maisel’s Weisse? Apparently someone named Maisel liked Hefeweizens and they started a brewery in Bavaria and brewed Weizens… that’s about it really. Can it beat my all-time favourite Hefeweizen: Weihenstephaner? Only time will tell, mere minutes in fact.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a Weizen glass.

A: Cloudy amber/orange (could easily be mistaken for a glass of fresh orange juice if not for the head and carbonation) body with a cream-coloured fluffy 2 centimetre head that stands up OK, could be denser IMO. 7/10.

S: Really top-notch Hefeweizen aroma of ripe banana with prominent overripened pear and a light hint of clove spice… possibly the most pear ester driven Weizen I’ve ever laid my nose on - this would suggest a fairly sweet Weizen, but then again my nose has be fooled on many an occasion. 9/10.

T: Starts with pear, middle pear, and finishes with pear… oh and there’s ripe banana with a hint of clove and a dash of caramel sweetness too. Finish is slightly on the dry side which definitely adds to drinkability in this style. Quite surprised by how well balanced this one is actually, given how I’ve never seen it before now. Hints of herbal astringency come out as well when the glass drains down a little. 9/10.

M: Medium bodied, as all great Hefes should be, with soft water and good texture from medium/creamy carbonation - this is up there with the best mouthfeel I’ve experienced in any Weizen, or ANY beer FTM (For That Matter)! 10/10.

D: This is one top-notch Weizen that deserves to be in my personal German Hefe pantheon along with the likes of: Weihenstephaner, Franziskaner, Schneider Weisse and König Ludwig. The only thing where Weihenstephaner consistently defeats this (and many of the other Hefeweizens in the pantheon) is on price; at around $8 a bottle it’s hard not to choose Weihenstephan’s $6 a bottle pricing, other than that I say “A Maisel a day keeps the blues away (and your Gastroenterologist happy when your liver eventually fails)”, prost! 8/10.

Food match: This is a somewhat more versatile Hefe than most and would easily match anything from German cuisine/BBQ to pizza/salad.

500ml bottle poured into a weizen glass.

Cloudy dark amber hue that considers darker than typical Hefeweizen, it tops with massive fluffy off-white head that withstands with excellent retention before slowly dissipating to everlasting foamy crown along with plenty of sticky lacing patch and spot here and there.

Led by citrus and banana from yeasty ester, there are also scents of clove spice, bubble gum, and bready malt sweetness.

The taste is purely straightforward to the style with big fruity ester (citrus and banana), clove spice and bubble gum adding more depths to the flavor structure while malt lends notes of bread and sweet. There is not much hop bitterness to speak with that is normal for this type of beer.

Medium body with smooth mouthfeel and lively crisp carbonation generated a wave of soft effervescence through the palate, finish is dry. Classic and genuine Hefeweizen, there is nothing as a twist or new but simple as its best.

Draft at Octoberfest Budapest 2016. Unfortunately i could not make notes but the banana blast in the taste which followed the nose was amazin. Brutally good weizen, one of the best stuff i have ever tasted.

Crowler purchased from Growl Movement in Salem OR $6 Pours a slightly hazy golden colour with a large thick and frothy off white head. Very strong fruity/over ripe bananas aromas. Sweet pink apples come to mind for some reason. Nice. Taste similar to aroma but has a nice creamy aspect. Excellent mouth feel silky smooth. A very good drinkable weiss bier.

500ml bottle into a tall weizen glass. Paid £2.25 for a single bottle.

Pours a hazy, dark, golden-orange body with plenty of visible streaming carbonation. A tall, foamy, three-finger in height, bone-white coloured head with excellent retention slowly reduces to dense cap, leaving behind small amounts of spotty lace.

The subtle nose consists primarily of light malted wheat and faint citrusy sweetness. Some gentle clove spice becomes perceptible towards the back end, but the banana and bubblegum esters typical of the style remain absent. Taste roughly follows suit. Tangy, tart notes of bready wheat and lightly sweet grains lead the flavour profile upfront. Mid palate, a mild fruity lemon peel-like character develops, while faint clove phenols build towards the finish. In the mouth, a light to medium body and ample amounts of lively carbonation give a vaguely smooth and creamy feel, but on the whole, the texture is a little too thin and fizzy. On the end, hints of clove and light malt sweetness linger shortly before finishing with refreshing dry tartness.

Overall this is a decent beer. It’s tart, tangy, dry and refreshing, but its flavour profile is predominantly wheat driven, neglecting in turn the yeast presence I enjoy in the style. As there are a number of more balanced/ flavourful/ estery Hefeweizen’s available to me at a similar price point, I can’t see myself picking up another bottle any time soon.

Yummm! Outstanding traditional Hefeweizen beer. Aroma and flavor have that traditional spicy clove, banana, malt, sweet-tart, thirst quenching thang. Wish it was distributed around La Crosse, Wisconsin again.

Looks like a semi-clear hefe. Smells a typical hefe, too (although I prefer more yeasty banana emanating.)
Tastes very balanced; spices and wheat and barley all play nice. Feel is very soft with modest bubbles.
OA: A very pleasant beer by itself or, next time, with a selection of harder cheeses.
Listed on the "1001" , Maisel's Original probably deserves this because it was marketed so well to the rest of Germany so they could enjoy hefe-s.
MJ's 1999 "Guide" gave it 2.5 stars of 4 and said it has "a big fluffy body."

Tastes more like a dubbel than a weissbier. Considering many hefes taste very similar to one another, this one is outside that pack.

Deep hazy orange/dehydrated urine color when poured, thick porous head as to be expected from any good hefeweizen. Smell is very muted, mostly cloves are all thats detectable. The taste, as I wrote in my first sentence is very much like a belgian strong ale or dubbel. If you like those beers and haven't had a hefeweizen you've enjoyed yet, this one is what you should be drinking.
Personally I'll stick with the more banana ester-type weissbier, those by Schneider or Weihenstephaner or Andechs (which is more a yeast-bomb and looks like butterscotch beer!) This isn't something I'll be returning to even though I respected the end result as a well-made beer, it's just not my taste.
