how have i never heard of this before? seems like this is one of the better hefeweizens ive had, maybe one of the best in the game overall. cant believe i never knew about it. if i can figure out where to buy it, it may become a staple in the fridge for me, its amazing. quite light as they go, both in yeast flavor and in body, and it delicate nature is really welcome and subtle. more yellow than golden, pale and a little hazy but not super cloudy. less dense head than others too, airy not creamy, looks summery, muted but attractive. smells and tastes like a hefe alright, its got a more mild banana clove thing happening, but this is as much flavored by the wheat as the yeast, maybe fermented a little cooler or something, the balance is different, and it works really well. smooth feeling on the palate, really well carbonated and mighty dry. lighter than many, but still just really authentic and refreshing and bright and perfectly made. not sure ive ever seen the bottles around, but i sure would like to find them. also keen to try their other flavors. really spot on and worth seeking out if you are a fan of the old world hefeweizens.

Cost was 0.79 euro plus a 0.08 euro pfand (deposit) for a .5L bottle at a Kaufland hypermarket in Berlin.

BOTTLE: Half a litre. Brown glass. Blue and white colour motif. Branded pry-off crown cap. Best before: 19.11.16.

5.20% ABV.

APPEARANCE: Classic hazy orange hefeweizen body. Off-white cap of fair froth and good (~6 minute retention). Leaves no lacing as it recedes. No yeast is visible within the body.

It's a decent look for a hefeweizen, ticking all the conventional boxes. But it isn't all that vibrant. Head could be softer and more robust.

Appears well-carbonated.

AROMA: Soft clove and yeasty spice. Banana. Wheat. I don't get any orange peel, unfortunately. It's a classic hefeweizen aroma, but each note lacks the vividness and expressiveness you'd find in a superior example of the style. Leans a bit too heavy on the banana ester, in my opinion. Wheat bill could come off more fresh.

Aromatic intensity is average. I detect no booze or off-notes. Suggests an unbalanced hefeweizen with limited depth of flavour but a pleasant taste.

TASTE & TEXTURE: The softness of the mouthfeel is wonderful; I don't know if that's just German water or if the brewers really know their water chemistry, but damn it's well-executed. Carbonation is near perfect, if a biteen low. Smooth, wet, refreshing, aptly medium-bodied. It's a nice texture for a hefeweizen, but unfortunately there just aren't that many deep or vivid flavours to accentuate.

It does lean heavy on the banana esters from the yeast, drowning out any spicy clove that might inject more balance into this already simplistic brew. The hefeweizen is often simple - that's fine - but the best ones often have so much balance and subtlety to what few notes they're working with that it's artful. This one fails to achieve that; it's heavy handed with its reliance on banana, and lacks the notes of spicy clove and orange peel that you'd find in style paragons. The result is not a bland beer, but certainly a wanting one - especially in terms of depth of flavour. Frankly, it's a bit "one-note."

Flavour duration and intensity are average. It's cohesive enough, but doesn't drink like a gestalt whole.

OVERALL: The mouthfeel exceeds the taste in terms of quality. This doesn't come close to competing with Bavarian entries like Ayinger, Franziskaner, or even Erdinger. That said,at under 1 euro a half litre it's well worth trying (though price points are never a factor in my ratings). Highly drinkable, if a bit plain for a hefeweizen. I'd like to see them retain this mouthfeel whilst adding more flavour and reducing simplicity. It does hide its ABV well, and I could easily finish 3+ bottles in a sitting, but why bother buying this again when Ayinger, Weihenstephaner, Franziskaner, et al. can be had for right around the same price?

High C+ (3.23) / WORTH A TRY

Bottle Date: sometime in 2015
Palate Contaminants: sweets

Appearance is translucent gold. The head doesn't hang around.

Smell is nothing special, slightly sweet grain.

Taste blows everything up, though. I guess maybe the flavors don't get lost in volatilization. The sweetness is like a fresh grain of wheat, and that followed by a very mellow maltiness. There's a little bit of lemon, and something close to vanilla that I can't quite place.

Even though it doesn't appear too carbonated, the feel is moderately carbonated, with a moderate creaminess.

I'm finding Hefeweizens very similar these days. This is no exception, but it's just that 10% better all round. Taste, feel, smell etc and it has a little more bite and sharpness

A - A tad darker than the typical hefe's sunny straw color. More of a honey sunset color. Poured with a nice two finger head into a cylinder. Minimal lacing and mild to moderate carbonation.

S - Smells like the typical hefe, a little clove/banana action going on. It's not at all overpowering though.

T - Not nearly as sweet as the typical hefe. I'm really, really liking this one. Tastes very balanced. Clove and banana notes exist but are definitely muted.

M - Much cleaner and more crisp than the typical hefe with little to no lingering flavor.

D - Fantastic. I'm not too sure that I'd ever session any wheat but if I did it would be this beer. Very easy and pleasurable drinkability. All in all, I am pretty much astonished at the simplicity and awesomeness of this beer. I would definitely have this beer again with zero hesitation. If you like hefe beers but dislike them being too sweet, banana bombish, or too clove tasting give this one a try.

Not the greatest hefeweizen, but it absolutely nails that iconic German wheat and barley taste. Could use more banana and clove flavor. Good head and head retention.

Copper haze with a nice full head of foam. Very clovy smell, which continues in the taste. As the beer warms up, more flavours appear: orange, tangerine, lemon zest and banana. Quite a fruity Hefeweizen actually. I prefer a bit more banana flavour compared to the rest, but still quite nice.
