Has something of a cheap taste, a characteristic I'm beginning to associate with Schönram as a brand.

A subpar pale lager at best, and at worst a beer that's on par with other European beers oft-branded "premium" or "gold" - which is to say the marketing is trying to obfuscate the (lack of) quality.

It is drinkable, though.

Crystal clear, light golden body with a half inch of bone white head. Aromas of lager yeast, pils malt, sourdough bread, cereal. Clean, refreshing flavor. Light in body. Some grain notes in the finish. Solid.

Schönramer Gold is a Festbier, a Bavarian beer lager hiked to 6% for a special occasion. In this case, the occasion is Oktoberfest, but while most Bavarian Oktoberfest beers are dark, this one is a pumped-up Helles.

I poured from a half-liter bottle into a goblet. There was a quick explosion of fine head that fell quickly to a nice activew wreath of foam leaving lace trails on the class. The aroma and flavor both are wonderfully balanced between a slightly sweet, grainy malt and the fresh-mown hay aromas of noble hops--Isuspect Hallertauer.

The balance is perfect, beautiful, in fact. My biggest downgrade is a bit of haziness in the beer, quite possibly a touch of protein haze from the very, very pale pilsner malt used for this beer. The trade-off for that tiny bit of pearlescence is a really hard-to-achieve grainy maltiness which may only be possible with traditional Bavarian decoction mashing.

This is a classy, and classic lager. If all lagers had been made like this, there would probablyhave beenno need for the craft beer revolution.
