Stopped in last Wednesday (09APR08) with Alewife for Marthas's Happy Hour. Had a big-time hankerin' for more of the "Doctor", but Greg, their brewer, said he was out. Left the building a bit sooner than planned, and Gregs Ryezen was not quite ready, so he threw on this bier, which he'd been sitting on for 2 years...

Poured in a 12oz tulip, it was a clear, deep chestnut hue, with scant carbo within. Head was light tan, creamy and frothy to start, ebbing swiftly to a thin, fine layer. Lacing was quite nice as well. Aroma had some toffee and rich fruit notes, and I found it rather boozy, myself. Body was a solid medium, and it passed smoothly over my tongue.

Flavor had a minute suggestion of malt sweetness, with a little more toffee showing up, as well as subtle vanilla notes. Robust fruit flavors come forth, as from a rum-soaked fruit-cake. There's ample hoppy bitterness here, yet no suggestion of west-coast citrus characteristics. I thought the flavor did have a lot of heat, unlike the earlier review posted. Not sure if Greg cellared this on wood or not, but it does seem to have some whiskey-like implications. Pretty good stuff, though definitely a sipper.

Prosit!!

Had this on tap last night. Apparently it's part of their Reserve Beers list and this is worth stopping in for!

A - rich clear reddish amber hue, nice short white head
S - vinous toffee malts swirl with an aged citric resinous feel.
T - Wonderful toffee / caramel malts swirl with candied orange notes to make a very flavorful experience.
M - full bodied, nicely carbonated, smooth clean finish.
D - served in the smaller goblets, this was a great drinking barleywine. No note of the strength apparent in the taste and dangerously drinkable.

A nicely aged barleywine on tap and local! Get it while it lasts.
