It's been a few months since I last dropped by, but this is inarguably my favorite brewery in the city (not that I've been to them all; dozens, sure). I love lagers and German beer in general (the Czech ones are mighty fine as well) and Human Robot consistently hits the spot for me. I rarely get the same beer but, when I do, it's just as good as the last time. Surprisingly, I've barely touched the IPAs they brew, but the ones I've tried were all nice.

The staff for the most part is friendly and very attentive. And I've had some great random conversations with folks sitting next to me at the bar. Poe's sandwiches... what can I say?... half the reason I go there. Chef's kiss and all that.

Just a comfortable, chill, often lively spot (the outside seating's alright too) to have a great beer and sandwich. Hmm, I wanna go there like right now, but it's 4:45am...

I was here once when it was St. Benjamin's. Taproom still looks the same, small bar, and a few picnic beench type tables. Big Factory space, super high ceilings. Great service, Lots of lagers on, the two czech ones I had were really good. Street parking did not seem to be an issue.

Visited on a Tuesday afternoon halfway through my run. Not many folks were in the place when I arrived around 5:15, but half full at 6:15pm. Sat at the bar.

V - Industrial, small, worn out, but with a warm feeling. More PA old timers bar than a hip lager joint riding the craft beer wave. Side taps for three of the beers. You should have a tube or a milk pour. Good music, not too loud, easy to talk. They have a “to go” window that also serves beer for the covered tables on the street. A tiny bit of Czech in Philly. 4.0

Qual – The Tmavy, a dark lager, was great. 4.5

Sel - A good selection of traditional lager styles but also an IPA and a fruit splash. 4.25

Ser – The folks were nice and helpful. I liked that the brewers came in after they had finished for the day and hung around the bar. They were easy to engage. 4.25

Food - did not try

Carrying much sadness today (fucking COVID!) & hiding from the real world, I’m just going to hit the road, man. Phact phinding Philly Saturday with Zolli, Zolli, oxen free, ‘cause he’s been looking for adventure and he’s is up for taking the ride. Normally beering in Fishtown and/or Northern Lib, we’re a little off the usual course today as there are places to see in coming up North Philly East, Cecil B Moore or less…

Beer is being served through a window, but as we have our papers, we opt for the in of doors (Did I mention there was a pandemic on?) Huh, kind of reminds me of that St. Benjamin place. Anyway, it’s a single room with an ‘L’ shaped wood plank bar, dark wood diagonal panel base, and flat steel foot bar on the rear wall. Seating for a baker’s dozen on brown leather topped steel stools.

Squared dark wood diagonal barback piece just like the bar base, with a 3-panel arched mirror on center. A dozen non-descript handles somewhat labeled above with black magnetic letters on a dinged stained metal panel. Glassware sits countered to both sides, and shelved below, with drawers on the ends. A single shelf above the taps with bottles (guest & house), cans, glassware, hats, a trophy, a pennant, a giant 6L St. Bernardus bottle, a Treehouse growl, White 2x2 tiles to both sides of center barback with a black tile trim. Tap list (beer, style) to the left in black magnets and a can cooler on the end.

Wood plank floors, and a white painted ceiling with 2-blade spinnys on a belt (super cool), drop spots, & light strips over the seating. Arched front door with rounded glass panels above and windows of the same to both sides, the far wall of distressed brick and peeled cement with a logo piece and hanging merch, a clean white painted rear wall with a Human Robot neon, and panel windows offering brew room views forward of there with a peek-a-boo window to Poe’s Sandwich Joint in between (would really like to get my Skinny Joey on, but I’m holding out for Fette Matty’s BBQ ‘cause I’ve been Zolli’d).

A trio of 8 stooled long shared hightops behind us and 4 raised rounds on the far wall behind them. And slight bar counter ledge action below the windows to the brew room. And there’s an outdoor makeshift seating space, these being Covid times, and all. We got seats at the bar due to being awesome.

Sometimes when I scribble notes in my little book of crazy, I later find that I don’t know what they’re about. “Iguana on the bar” and something about a “Wu Tang Clan DVD on the shelf” are things I cannot properly comment on, so I’ll just leave them here.

So, a dozen beers up just now (Czech 10, Czech Pale Lager, 4.2%; Polotmavy, Czech Garnet Lager, 5.2%; Hallertau Pils, German Style Pils, 5.2%; Tin Hoagie, American Light Lager, 4%; Hallertau Blanc Pils, DH German Style Pils, 4.6%; Burgenstrabe, Franconian Style Zwickelbier, 5.2%; Sommerbock, Bock, 6.8%; Kolner, Kolsch Style Ale, 5%; Dreams of Orgonon, IPA, 6.6%; Café Tropical, Coconut IPA, 6.4%; Single Axis: Citra, IPA, 6.5%; Content Therapy, DIPA, 8%).

I’m thinking Polotmavy (Czech Garnet Lager), Burgenstrabe (Franconian Style Zwickelbier), & Kolner (Kolsch Style Ale) for the wins, but having also hit the Czech 10 (Czech Pale Lager) & Hallertau Pils (German Style Pils), really, thems Lagers are all solid.

Some of these are on LUKR faucets, and they’ve got milk tube pours a-goin’ on. Beers are served in very goddamn appropriate glassware. Dylantender this evening; attentive and knows his stuff. Tunes, yeah, 70’s soul mostly. Good crowd of like-minded Lager drinkers. Am talking with old school Deadheads and people who can intelligently back and forth on the Shelton Brothers portfolio situation. I am very much so liking on the Lager program here. Fuck, um, yeah! This place, I do dig.

stopped here for an afternoon of drinking beers in the taproom. located in an old industrial brick building with some character in the arched window and door openings. basic small taproom setup of a bar and some high top tables. they also have built an outdoor structure on the side of the street for outdoor drinking. Not sure if that will last once COVID regulations are fully lifted. About a dozen beers on tap, split between traditional German and Czech style lagers and hazy IPAs, with a stout and fruited kettle sour in the mix as well. I drank 4 of the lagers, and 1 IPA. Served in appropriate glassware, the lagers were very high quality. There is also a sandwich shop called Poe's located in the space, easy to order on your phone and food brought out. great sandwich and fries.

Bustling new neighborhood brewery. Bar can seat maybe 20. Lots of hightops and a few community tables can seat about 30-40 more. They could have a waitress to help take orders from the tables. One bartender working, she was pretty good at handling the crowd.

Eight beers on tap, I tried 4. Three styles of lager were on tap. Also two IPA's, a double IPA, and two stouts. 3 out of the 4 that I had were above average.

The kitchen was very busy, the menu is sandwiches. Didn't eat anything this visit but I do plan on trying the food another time.
