A: Pours an opaque yet still clear extremely dark chestnut brown approaching jet black in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and moderate dark brown + dark cola brown + dark ruby red colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense fizzy foamy dark tan head that reduces to a large patch of slightly mottled very thin film covering approximately 90% of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of sweet chocolate cake + vanilla + marshmallow + coconut over the top of moderate aromas of roasted + dark + chocolate malts with moderate amounts of lactose sweetness. Light aromas of earthy hops.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of roasted + dark + chocolate malts with moderate amounts of lactose sweetness. That is followed by moderate to strong flavors of sweet chocolate cake + vanilla + marshmallow + coconut. Finally there is a light flavors of earthy hops. Light amounts of roasty bitterness which fade away fairly quickly leaving moderate lingering sweet chocolate cake flavors.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth and creamy with a light amount of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: Drinks very easily considering the strength and sweetness with a very enjoyable smooth creamy mouthfeel. Really nice combination of flavors and aromas that work really well together. Definitely would enjoy another one of these as a substitute for dessert on another evening.

12 oz bottle split with a friend at the end of a tasting session, poured into a red wine glass. Very sweet. Lots of chocolate, vanilla, and marshmallow, some coconut and coffee. Cloying and boozy. Not worth drinking given the high alcohol (which the can didn't state), and I dumped the last couple of ounces of my pour.

 

 

12 oz can from The Beer Station (SC) served in a Belgian snifter. The 30 September 2020 canning date stamped on the bottom of the can is just over a year ago.
Appearance. Clear but nearly opaque brown body that's reddish-brown at the edges. This has a minimal and weak tan head.
The high ABV is all too evident in the aroma but well hidden in the feel and flavor. Aside from being a bit too sweet (but making for a fun new dessert beer) this has a very good mix of flavors. Vanilla, faint coconut, chocolate, faint smoke and brown sugar all appear.
Mouthfeel. Slick, smooth full body with low carbonation.

 

 

Poured from a 9/30/2020 12 ounce can into a DFH tulip. Beautiful two tone large tan and brown head which disappeared before I could get a picture of it, over a dark brown body through which light didn't penetrate. Being used to imperial stouts the lactose smell instead of roast malts and char initially threw me off until it warmed and the initial chocolate smell became supplemented with vanilla and coconut. Taste follows the nose but is even more enhanced. Mouthfeel is suitably less thick and sticky than a big stout and nicely refreshing. For 12% this goes down way too easily. A very nice example of the style.

Nose is vanilla, lactose, cane sugar, chocolate, coconut, and marshmallow. Very creamy. Sweet. Beer opens chocolate, lactose, milk, coconut, and coca cola. Some honey and cane sugar in the middle with loads of marshmallow fluffiness. Sweet cream and vanilla at the finish with molasses, chocolate, more coconut, and cocoa in the aftertaste. Really delicious. Body is medium with moderate to low carbonation. Smooth and velvety on the palate and goes down messy with a lingering finish. Somehow super drinkable too.

This is a pretty impressive beer. Definitely one of the better coconut porters out there.

12oz can poured into a tulip

A- pours a syrupy thick black color with a one-finger khaki head that has short retention

S- chocolate cake batter, vanilla cream, marshmallow cream, coconut, lactose, just a hint of roast

T- sweet chocolate cake batter up front mixes with notes of marshmallow and sweet vanilla cream. Mid-palate brings out some coconut and more chocolate. A hint of roast on the finish, with more sweet chocolate and vanilla on the linger

M- medium-heavy body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into a silky, slightly warming finish

 

Medium black pour with a mocha head. Coconut and chocolate get together wonderfully in the nose with rich vanilla frosting, more chocolate and marshmallow atop this combo. Tastes takes on the chocolate right away, bakers and milk both present, then a huge wave of vanilla hits, then marshmallow vanilla, before finishing with coconut and some receeding chocolate and vanilla. A lot going on and it is lovely. Feel is sticky yet so smooth and sneaky light, helping the palate not get too taxed by the adjuncts. Great dessert porter

 

 

 

 

L: Poured from a can to a pint glass. Had a deep, dark brown, almost black color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a quarter inch of foamy, tan-colored, somewhat long-lasting head. Pretty good lacing.

S: A sweet and enticing aroma of marshmallows, malt, chocolate, coconut, and vanilla.

T: Tasted of a little bit of malt (present throughout, though very subtle), a bit of coconut (quite light and sweet), a lot of marshmallows (a major ingredient), some chocolate (less than expected, but still very much present), and a hint of vanilla. This is a well-rounded, sweet and easy to like flavor. Quite tasty.

F: An average amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: On the whole, a super solid porter. Drinkable.

 

Poured hard from a can into a snifter glass, forming a finger or two of light brown head that soon faded to a bit of lacing and eventually nothing. Deep cola brown body. Smell is marshmallow and chocolate. Taste is a well balanced mix of marshmallow, chocolate, and coconut. Somewhat sweet and increasingly so as it warms, but not too strong that you can only sip. High ABV but not boozy. Medium bodied, just a hint of oiliness, and very light carbonation. Very tasty dessert stout, thankfully the marshmallow doesn't overpower.

 

 

Excellent head production, but it's a touch fizzy and very quickly disappears entirely, with no lacing or topper to ever tell the tale it was ever there. Body is a dark near-black, with cola-like transparency at the edges. No floaties, but if you swirl the glass, you can see tiny sediment particles clinging to the glass and slowly sliding down.

I know this is billed as an "Imperial Pastry Porter," so some visible imperfections of this kind are expected, but ultimately it's a disappointing look no matter how you approach it.

Sweet aroma, albeit a tinge metallic. Vanilla and marshmallow are perhaps strongest, coconut following. There's a syrupy-like sweetness along with molasses, but I can't quite find the chocolate - perhaps a bit after searching quite a while. It's a pleasant aroma, but that metallic edge isn't ideal.

Very similar on the palate, but it comes together better than on the nose. At first syrupy, it quickly yields nice notes of coconut, with a growing balance of chocolate, vanilla, and marshmallow. Coconut lingers through most of the sip, and the chocolate grows on the back third. Definitely grows on you with each sip, with the beneficial tones amplified, and no sign of the metallic note present on the nose.

Slick, but not full bodied, which is a bit surprising for a 12% ABV pastry stout. Very low but present alcohol heat; virtually no sting.

Poured from 12 oz can.

Lower carb and fairly thick looking.

Taste comes across as rich cake batter with chocolate, vanilla. Hints of coconut and marshmallow.

Canned 9/30/20; drank 10/18/20 @ the Yarchives.

Black appearance.

A violent pour yielded a huge khaki head; strong lace.

Fresh earth, coconut, burnt caramel & cream notes in the nose.

Medium thick, creamy mouthfeel.

Coconut & fresh earth flavors up front; cream & burnt caramel notes on the finish.

Balanced, at least, but the "pastry" components taste a bit artificial. Decent, but not one I'll return to.

12oz can pour into tulip.

Appearance: Motor oil black body. 2 fingers tall of medium khaki head that drops down to a thin uneven cap. Nice lacing around the glass. When pouring this beer it appears viscous.

Smell: Chocolate and vanilla with a hint of coconut.

Taste: Roasty malt note and moderately bitter cocoa flavor. Big vanilla and hint of coconut.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied beer with almost, but not quite moderate carbonation levels. Oily and slightly silky body. Ever so slight booze note in the finish initially, but as it warms up the booze level increases.

Overall: My first stout from Humble Forager. This stout has got the adjunct flavors that are fairly discernible with a pleasantly thick body. It's definitely a sweet stout / dessert type stout. Thank goodness that it's not overly sweet though. It's also notable that they did not need lactose to achieve the heftier body.

Can. Tan head. Thick black color. Pours more like a stout.

Reminds me of other forager pastry stouts. Thick and dessert like. Vanilla, fudge cake, coconut, and toasted marshmallow. Smooth and creamy. Very thick. Rich and decadent.

For $6 a can, this is a winner. They need to keep this up to keep cost in check.

 

Pours a dark mahogany color with thin khaki head. Smell has roasted malt,chocolate vanilla and toasted coconut ,Taste is superb, roasted malts with chocolate/marshmallow mix then coconut vanilla cream. Mouth feel smooth and creamy with above tastes and smells, dessert in a can.
