Ancient traditions dictate this Belgian style Dubbel was brewed with a long kettle boil, pitching a blend of yeast strains and bottle conditioning encouraged with Belgian Candi Sugar. Dan’s insistence on old world methodology creates the complexity of the Strong Ale you hold 18°P. Sipping will reveal a cordial of caramel and spiced fruit notes. This makes it perfect to lie down in your cellar or enjoy by the fire tonight.

Just cracked another one of these from last year and i am still impressed. tastes of candied sugar sweet maltiness and dates. was very fortunate to lay some of this down and will explore again.

Appearance: a reddish brown color. two to three fingers of a tannish head that leaves a sticky lacing on the sides and a nice coat on the top. fairly hazy and opaque.

Smell: strong caramel malts, followed by dark fruits, mostly plums and some raisins. some dark candi sugar sweetness. light cloves and some spices phenols.

Taste: opens up with some candied sweetness. full of dark fruits, mostly plums and minor raisins. belgian yeast makes itself known with cloves, minor bananas, and a good amount of spicy phenols.

Mouthfeel: somewhat dry. but a bit creamy as well. not very heavy and quite smooth.

Overall: New Glarus makes some great dark belgian ales. between this and the anniversary strong ale, I am really looking forward to more belgians from them. Very true to style and well done. Extremely tasty as well. One of the best american dubbels I have had.

Creamy creme brulee color head, vibrant carmel color beer, light candied notes of fruit, a pleasant sweetness on the tongue, goes down smooth with aperfect light aftertaste. If you like Belgium Dubbles, you will love this one. Good in fall or early spring.

12oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

(A)- Pours a deep chestnut brown amber color. Produced an absolutely sexy cap of off-white to tan foamy froth that stuck around for quite awhile before dissipating. Left all kinds of sticky clumps of lacing behind as it did so.

(S)- Lots of biscuit & bread flows into some subtle dark fruits. Fairly rustic with the almost oaky/woody smell this puts off but just might be slightly nutty instead.

(T)- Fairly similar to the smell with lots of rustic nutty biscuit and bread with some subtle dark fruits and spice to the finish. As it opens up, more fruits start to show and almost takes on this slightly creamy taste to the finish.

(M)- A great carbonation level and balance for the style. Perhaps a touch yeast-driven up front, but really starts to become something nice as you let it sit for just a few minutes.

(O)- If there was a brewery I could always trust to deliver something special, I can always count on Dan over at New Glarus. A great take on a dubbel if there ever was one from the states. You would be hard pressed to tell the difference if tasted blind next to the classics from belgium.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall New Glarus Signature Pilsner Glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep and hazy brownish amber with a lot of rising bubbles. Huge four finger light tan head which slowly fades into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing.

Smell: A toasty, fruity, and fairly spicy malt driven aroma with good hints of dark fruit and yeast. Belgian yeast with some spice hints of cinnamon, clove, and peppers. Big mix of fruit esters with some hints of apple, pear, banana, and dark cherry, raisin, fig, and plum. Sweet hints of candied sugar and brown sugar. Toasted malts with hints of caramel, toffee, biscuit, grains, and toasted bread. Hops are very light. A very solid fruity aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a fruity, toasty, and spicy malt forward taste with big notes of apple, dark fruit, and yeast. Upfront Belgian yeast with some funk and spice notes of cinnamon, pepper, and clove. Big fruit taste with notes of apples, pear, and banana along with some dark fruit notes of cherries, fig, raisin, and plum. Toasted malt with notes of sweet caramel, toffee, biscuit, grains, and toast. Sweet taste of brown sugar and Belgian candied sugar. Subtle background hops. A pretty solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium to high amount of carbonation. Creamy, juicy, and very smooth.

Overall: A pretty nice take on a Dubbel. Good mix of fruit esters with a solid toasty malt presence with spice.

A - Brown, mostly opaque, a bit speckled, with a light tan head that rises high and hangs around, eventually fading to a film of suds. There's a little lacing, but nothing more than a few scattered pockets.

S - Strong hits of alcohol and dark fruits, sweetness and a slight herbal quality.

T - The herbal element comes forward, with dark fruits in support. No sign of the alcohol from the nose. There is an aspect that reminds me of a well brewed tea. A little bitterness, and the close leaves you wanting another swig.

M - Light on the tongue, moderate carbonation, and a clean close.

O - Quite enjoyable, and easily drinkable, it makes me want to find other Dubbels. A bit lighter than your Belgian Strong, but not in the ABV, so it is one to be careful about as you drink.

Deep in the recesses of the Belgian abbey lies the secrets, divine interventions and distinctive flavors of dubbel ale. That time-honored taste is both respected and replicated thanks to the fine brewers of New Glarus.

In true abbey form, their Dubbel pours with a deep and ominously dark garnet pour. Rusty with haze, its billowing head carries a tarnish tint and generously expels its yeasty bouquet, filling the nose with dark dried fruit, peppery spice and an alcohol laced bready sweetness to suggest rum cake.

The characterful ale continues to unfold throughout the fatty middle palate, laying down a foundation of spice cake sweetness with a doughy center. Dried cherries, figs, raisins, prunes and grapes all carry a vinous tang and condensed sweetness. Balanced with peppercorn, bitter walnut, playful acidity and alcohol, its steely caramels are matched with ease.

Expressive carbonation keeps the ale lighter than normal as the bubbles give the malt a lift, carrying in a quick, tangy and spicy finish. Its rummy warmth keeps the complexities piling on even while the echoes of malt and fruit continue deeply in aftertaste.

Cloudy orange-brown, with a good initial head that fades to a ring of lace.

Wood, clove, cherry in the nose.

Plum, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, brown sugar, and caramel.

Thick and smooth.

This was smooth, and nailed the style as far as I could tell. Would have believed this was from Belgium.

12 oz bottle poured into a Bruery tulip.
7.8% ABV

A - Though dark auburn brown in color, this Dubbel pours nice and clear with a tall off white head that rises up quickly only to sink slowly while leaving lace on the glass.

S - Belgian candi sugar and caramelized malts from a long kettle boil give New Glarus' Dubbel a sweet aroma that's delicately underscored by Belgian yeast nuances of faint, dry and dusty earthy spice and a touch of banana more reminiscent of banana bread.

T - The undertones of dry, dusty earthiness rise up with force, and over take the sweet maltiness which lingers on the tongue with a burnt caramel profile.

M - Highly effervescent, this champagne-like bubbly brew is very dry on the finish, which balances out the sweetness of the malt quite nicely.

O - New Glarus' Dubbel almost immediately mimics many of its Belgian counterparts in many regards but most prominently, its high level of carbonation. The bubbles and dry finish are common for this style as is its sweeter aroma but, this one is quite earthy and doesn't carry with it nearly as much Belgian yeast influence as many others. Quite good nonetheless, New Glarus' Dubbel is another Thumbprint release worth picking up.

From a bottle, pours a murky dark brown and amber color with a wispy white head.

The smell is just a bit of dark fruit, lots of candied sugar, yeast and good spice characteristics. This smells like it will be delicious. The flavors are fruitier than the nose lets on, some figs and raisins, but they have a distinct spice to them, holiday-like. The yeast and caramel malt backbone pull it all together. It is moderately sweet, but the bitterness from some hops keeps it balanced.

I really like this, great example of the style and very traditional.

Appearance: Pours an ice tea color with a massive head and a brief bubble show; great retention and lacing; looks like a Belgian

Smell: Toasted bread, caramel, apple, pear and spice cake tones

Taste: Toasted bread and caramel, up front, with the apple, pear and spice cake elements building, in the middle; after the swallow, the finish is surprisingly dry

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate to high carbonation

Overall: I was surprised by where my score came out as I was initially thinking that this was not a 4+ beer as it didn't have the dark fruit and candi sugar elements of a Belgian dubbel; the more I drank it, however, the more I liked it and I was sold by the relatively dry finish

12 ounce bottle into a chalice.

Nice ruby color, hazy, good sized head with an aggresive pour. Smell is lots of purple grapes, slightly floral. Taste continues the big grapes, some figs, dates and plums. Fairly sweet. Pretty carbonated for the style, but it feels good in the mouth.

Typical solid effort from New Glarus. True to the style, but distinct. Would buy again if/when they bring it back.

In a Belgian Tulip from a 12 ounce bottle.

A- cloudy brown body with a tremendous pale, foamy white head. Healthy carbonation, plenty of lace, and visible yeast residue.

S- Sweet and full of dark fruit, there's a syrupy quality there. There's a tinge of booze, some earthiness, and malt.

T- A sweet, caramel malt flavor, a taste of candy syrup, dark fruit, earthiness.

M- Thick and heavy bodied, with a blast of yeasty effervescence mid-palate, and a almost entirely sweet feel. At the finish, there's a touch of hops that provide slight bitterness. There's almost no booze detected.

Damn tasty brew. Very well-executed.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into accompanying New Glarus stemmed glassware. Served chilled...

A) Ombré amber brew, with a big frothy light tan head. Nice retention and lacing. Good looking brew right here.

S) Bready, yeast, raisin, brown sugar and spices. Really opens up as it gets closer to room temp. A pleasant aroma...

T) A good amount of that Belgian yeast flavor. You get the Belgian candi sugar too. Kind of like candy raisins. A bit woody, with light spices.

M) Medium bodied with active carbonation. Solid texture.... Goes down nicely.

O) Enjoyable... Dan Carey does a nice job brewing up the Belgian styles. Definitely worth a try...

This pours a cloudy, burnt amber color with a slight off-white head. The aroma is mildly sweet with malts and yeast. The taste is quite strong with malt and yeast. There is a full volume with a decent amount of carbonation. It finishes with a bit of a spice after taste and lingering yeast. A very interesting brew from New Glarus.

Appearance: Lots and lots of carbonation in this one! Pours a sizable light-tan head that diminishes pretty quickly. Deep, rich copper color that you can definitely see through.

Smell: Strong notes of caramel and molasses. Subtle hints of booze, but definitely covered buy by the otherwise-sweet smells.

Taste: Hmm. Kinda like some of the Belgian dubbels in many regards, but with a big caveat: The notes here aren't exactly dancing around like what you'd see in the best of this category, but just seem to be one big melted-together flavor. Don't get me wrong, the flavors melded together nicely, but there just doesn't seem to be that... distinct group of flavor notes... that one would expect here.

Mouthfeel: Slightly sticky, but pretty smooth overall.

Overall: This is a tough one to get a feel for. On one hand, it's VERY drinkable. Just to get an accurate feel on the "taste" section took about half the glass. It's a very fair representation of what we've come to expect from Dan at NG with the Thumbprint series: It takes something that we've grown to love in a genre - the dubbel in this case - and puts a very unique twist on this. In this case, the twist is - oddly enough - its balance. When the flavors meld together to the point where it's very difficult to pick out unique notes, that's an impressive balancing act. People are either going to love this or hate it - I really find it hard to picture someone being "on the fence" with this. That said, I'm gonna cellar some and see what happens.

Pours a slightly hazy medium brown with ruby highlights and a huge, billowing, dense, frothy khaki head that slowly dissipates, leaving sheets of lacing.

Aroma is slightly metallic initially, but esters of prunes, raisins, green apple, pear, and dates take over. There's a bit of dark candi sugar backbone, adding sweetness. Floral notes surface late.

Flavor reveals more tart apple character underlying lightly toasted, lightly sweet malt. Pear takes over mid palate. Notes of banana and raisin contrast the toast. The metallic character surfaces a bit in the aftertaste. The balance is estery. Not overly sweet.

Body is moderate to a touch full, with high carbonation and noted alcohol warmth.

Nice estery character, more complex in the aroma. Good balance of malt sweetness and dryness. Wish the carbonation were lower so the flavor would linger more.

Pours a see through coppery amber color, with a thin tan head. Smell is good with nice note of canned peaches. Taste is like WOW, not what I expected. Very boozy yet it is balance out nicely with caramel malt and some sweetness, yet this finishes with a pretty big bitterness. Mouthfeel is sharp at first, then mellows, very carbonated.

Overall, I really like this one. Definitely worth picking up. Would pair great with pizza. I will cellar a couple bottles to see what the age will do.

A - Pours a deep, dark brown in color; 1.5 finger dirty white head. Head fades slowly into a thin collar and leaves behind spots of lacing.

S - Belgian candy sugar, toffee, caramel, banana esters, and spiced dark fruits.

T - Sweet malts with Belgian candied sugar, spiced dark fruits, caramel and brown sugar. Hints of banana esters with some Belgian yeast.

M - Big carbonation that really fizzes in my mouth with a nice light body. A very slight fruitiness lingers on my tongue.

O - Solid overall beer and my first ever Dubbel. It was quite good and refreshing. I imagine that this will age very well.

Received as an extra in a trade and poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a nice crystal clear chestnut hue with a big, creamy two finger off white head that fades slowly to leave a dense creamy blanket but not much in the way of side lacing. The head kind of erupted from the glass too in a concerning manner; still, solid enough appearance. 4 (x .05 = .2)

S - Aromas of darker fruits, grains, yeast, light belgian spices such as cloves, solid esters, nice caramel and sweet malts. The back end though has a rather strong hit of alcohol and deep inhales only make it all the more prominent. 3.5 (x .2 = .7)

T - Taste is similar to the nose, though a bit more of that rustic old world bread/grain going on. Caramel and sweet malts take over along with darker fruit, like a very yeasty potent raisin bread. The belgian spice notes are really spot on and the esters are rather pleasant too. Alcohol is hidden nicely, unlike the nose. 4.25 (x .45 = 1.913

M - Mouthfeel is a bit heavily carbonated, not quite as creamy as I'd like for the style. Not heavy or syrupy though. 3.75 (x .1 = .375)

O - Overall, a surprisingly good offering from New Glarus that isn't a fruit based beer. Nice representation of the style and while tasty I wish it brought more to the table regarding nose and mouthfeel. 3.75 (x .2 = .75)

One week long camping review dump. Full notes taken on phone. This was consumed at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, ND.

A- Slightly murky brown body poured to a goblet from the 12oz bottle. Off white head up to two fingers with a thick frothy texture and good retention. Cap falls to many islands and a medium ring. Spotty lace.

S- Dark fruits like dried raisins and dates come to mind with figs and cherry. Brown sugar, medium candi sugar and toasted malts are the base.

T- Fruits seem to somehow even intensify here with plums, raisins, grapes, cherry, figs and dates coming out. Malts bring toast, medium and light candi sugar sweetness and something is a bit tart.

MF- Body thickness is just between light and medium with a foamy and silky texture. Carbonation is on the high side but texture takes off any bite from the bubbles.

Yeast creates a ton of fruit flavors but they are layered nicely onto candi sugar and malts.

A. Dark amber with burgundy highlights. Off white head of 2 fingers that ever so slowly recedes. Nice looking beer.

S. Soapy malt, cherry, caramel, wood aromas.

T. Black cherry, bready malt, zesty yeast though it does seems to be missing something that is typically found in Belgian Dubbels - maybe a bit of funk?

M. Light to medium body. Low carbonation.

O. I don't know when this was released - I believe about 6 months ago. I am glad I waited to review this since it does seem to have added some complexity. This is a well made, easy to drink Dubbel.

Appearance - The beer is a murky brown color with a bubbly white head.

Smell - It does smell like a Belgian, but on the mild side of the equations.

Taste - In the beginning, I detect caramel before the dark fruits hit. Belgian yeast and banana become more detectable toward the back. The beer is moderately warming going down.

Mouthfeel - I have a real attachment to way the bubbles massage in the tongue in this one. There is definitely some texture in this one which allows it to linger.

Overall - I would love for this one to be a little sweeter. Perhaps aging with do the trick.

Itching for a nice Belgian style beer, thanks to rudzud for giving me this.

Pours a ridiculous head, like way overcarbonated beer probably a bit sweet side due to the style and continued fermenting in the bottle a bit more than it should have, large 3 finger head forces me to stop pouring, fluffy fizzy bubbly head leaves wisps of spotty lacing, dark mahogany but clear colored beer.

Nose brings sweet brown sugar, candy syrup like notes, toffee and biscuit notes, faint candi sugar and faint phenols with a whisp of booze, a touch of a yeasty note, mild fruity esters as well. That's about it, fairly light for what I was expecting.

Taste starts a little yeasty, but that quickly fades to the sweet candy, Belgian candi sugar, with caramelized brown sugar, a condensed maple syrup and almost creme brulee like flavor of sweet caramelized candy sugars. A mild booze warmth kicks in, with light phenols and a little tingle, as well as some light fruity esters, a touch of fig and spiced date like flavor, a little effervescence as well. Lots of candied date and bananas foster like notes finishes a little sweet and mild sticky but not much, with more booze warmth lingering, a little bitterness, lots more candy syrup, caramel, toffee, etc, lingering.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, a touch syrupy, some warming tingly booze more than it should for less than 8%, and over carbonated.

Overall not bad, wish the phenols and esters were a bit more for how boozy it seems, nice fruits though but wish they were also a bit more, lots of nice candy flavors without being to sweet or syrupy, so still quite enjoyable.

Poured cold into a UK stout glass. Bottled on Feb 20 2014.
Look = 4.5 Pours a cloudy deep dark carmel/brown color with 2.5 fingers of frothy off-white head that reduces to a ring. Lace is medium dense but sticky.
Smell = 4.0 Sweet malt hit me first; some spice from the Belgian yeast. Slightly boozy. Smell strengthens as it warms, complex.
Taste = 3.5 Sweet malt with a spice kick; Belgian flavor is present but balanced with the candy sweetness. Some fruity esters. No bitterness present, alcohol is absent for the most part.
Feel = 4.0 Full-bodied with active carbonation; perfect for the style.
Drinkability = 4.0 A very good Dubbel. High drinkability at 7.8% ABV.
Overall = 3.9 A very true to style Dubbel - well made and solid across the board.
