I'm genuinely a bit surprised by the *relatively* low marks awarded this beer by the community, as I find it pretty exceptional—a really on-point execution of a style between styles. Wonderful burnished-flax color; furious, fat bubbles throughout; thick, pillowy off-taupe head; tremendous lacing; dry, citric-hop aromatics, with flashes of lemongrass and lemon-oil, hints of orange peel, and a sort of funky wet-hay valence; great mouthfeel, with a measured mixture of weiss-yeast bite and billowing wheat-informed creaminess; and a great combination of flavors, with spicy, velvety wheat, grapefruit bitters, dry grass, wet, immature pine-nettles, clove (they I don't personally pick up any cinnamon), and Kaffir lime leaf all swirling in this refreshing gyre, glued together pleasantly acerbic tart kick impelled by the key inoculation of New Glarus' trusty house weiss yeast.

And the bottle's lovely to boot.

I don't prefer hoppy beer, and I don't believe that mixture of clove, cinnamon and citrus mix well. It leaves a lingering aftertaste that is not pleasant

Pours a clear golden in color, topped with a rather large head.

Nose is filled with an admixture of wheat malt, weissbier character (especially yeast) and aromatic hops, although the hops have by now faded a great deal. A trace of oxidation.

Good first impression, with a slightly bitter, slightly tangy-sweet concoction which heavily favors a traditional pale ale. There's some nice malt character aside from the wheat malt, and I'm wishing I'd had this fresh as that character would stand out more, being bready and biscuity.

Some minty notes from the hops -- not bad if you're into that sort of thing.

It reminds me of one or two other American Wheat ales much more than it does a Hefeweissbier of the traditional variety.

I can't remember Crack'd Wheat being quite the same as this beer, but I was never particularly crazy for that one, either. Both this and that are and were -good- beers and unique renditions of Hefeweizen which some will appreciate, but I much prefer the standard Bavarian style. At 5.9% this is on the stronger side of things. Crack'd Wheat may also have been this strength, but I do not recall it having as much 'kick'; "Dancin' Man" at 7.5% is a Weizenbock by any reasonable stretch, which makes this the more drinkable of the two.

Still, this is a good one and worth checking out -- preferably quite fresh.
