Pours a murky dark brown in color. There's a nice quarter inch of frothy, off white head. Looks delish.
Smell is mostly dark roasted malts. Some peppery spiciness I'm picking up as well. A little bit of a smoky, tobacco scent as well.
Taste is more of the dark roasted malts. There's a lemony pepper spice going on as well. This is very nice. Plenty of carbonation dances around in the mouth. Medium to full mouthfeel. Very good beer. New Glarus does it again.

Pours black with a thick, off-white head. Aroma of charcoal and roasted malt. Smokey and roasted caramel flavors. Medium body and smooth. Slightly bitter finish with a subtle sweet after taste. Well balanced. Not like any Weiss I've ever seen, this could easily be passed off as a Porter.

Pours from the bottle a lovely onyx with a nice foamy, bubbly light tan head. Strings of lacing adorn the glass...very little light getting through this brew. Very nice! Roasted grains and chocolate hit my nose first along with a aromatic mix of banana, cloves and spice.

First sip brings a robust burnt, roasted chocolate maltiness. Creamy with banana undertones and just the right amount of clove spiciness on the way down. Well balanced between bitter and sweetness along with some earthy yeastiness. A damn good brew and one of my faves from New Glarus.

Mouthfeel has a lovely body with a smooth creaminess that goes down so easy. I could be happy drinking this brew all night. Man..I am kicking myself for not buying more. The next time I'm in Wisconsin I think I will have to buy a case. I'd say this is a must try!

Near pitch black brew, only a bit of Coke brown around the edge. Tan one finger head formed on top but quickly disappeared to only a thin bubble layer.

Banana and clove with a bit of nuttiness. One reviewer said banana nut bread and I totally agree. Nothing overly hoppy stands out. This beer smells awesome, truely inviting. Flavor follows much as the aroma came out but with less of the banana. A little chocolate mixes well with this. A bit of caramel rounds out the sweetness. As soon as it hits the tongue its quite spicy.

Mouthfeel is medium. A bit of carbonation works well with the spiciness. Nothing too exciting here. Drinkability is very good as well. This could be a good "convert" beer, I know I have definately enjoyed it.

12 oz bottle poured into my Back Road Brewery standard American pint glass. Murky brown with a long standing tan head. Rich bready, chocolatey, clovey aroma. Not very assertive. Bitter chocolate wheat flavors. Very drying. Med/Full bodied. Not a fan of wheat beers, but alway up for something new.

Pours a murky dark brown, almost black color with a full finger of tan head...disappears quite rapidly w/ only a thin layer remaining for the duration of the pint...decent lacing forms.
Sweet malt...milk chocolate and a hint of vanilla in the nose...quite inviting.
The taste is decent...carbonation is a bit overwhelming which distracts from the flavors. It must be the wheat that takes over at first, but I am able to grab some of the flavors I detected in the aroma. Very little hop bitterness and the sweetness is more subtle due to the carbonation, but it becomes a touch more apparent after warming up. Alcohol is not detected at any point.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, yet thicker than most wheat beers...not my favorite style, but a very unique take in this one.

Beer pours an almost pure black color with a tan head with a nice lacing. The smell is is of coffee, clove, banana, and chocolate. The taste is the same as the smell, according to notes, it sticks to the tongue very well for a long lasting taste. It has a full bodied mouthfeel, and this one is definately a drinkable beer.

Deep dark chocolate brown color sits under a thick, ultra-creamy, long-lasting head, which almost looks like soft serve ice cream, it's so smooth. Leaves a bit of lace, too, but this head never totally dies.

Aroma is largely nut, grain (rye, mostly) and soil/peat, obviously pretty earthy. A bit of unripe dark fruit lingers in the background, but not enough to influence the earthiness.

Rye influences the flavor is the best possible way, and anyone familiar with even a few different rye beers will recognize it here. Remains as earthy as the nose promises, with elements of poppyseed bread, smoke, lightly burnt chocolate and anise. Ultimate it's pretty husky, earthy and somewhat bready.

Smooth, gentle mouthfeel, thankfully not over-carbonated or prickly. Since the flavor is pretty robust and complex, a low-key but solid texture is needed here, and it pulls through on that score.

I'd call Black Wheat a malt-lover's dream without for a second considering it a malt-bomb. Its use of wheat, oats, rye and malted barley is inventive and tasteful. Woe be to those of us who don't live in Wisconsin, because it seems New Glarus just gets stronger every year.

Opague burnt clay with a gelatin spire of tan heading fueled by manic jets of CO2.
Nose of caramelized bananas, mocha, dark bread, and clove.
Floods into the mouth with milk chocolate. Inches sweeter with caramel nougat and blackened bananas. Light rye spiciness. Notions of seared vanilla pods. But still, the Caramellow candy bar hues reign supreme. Pinpricks of purple grape sweetness, and Dr. Pepper cola. Yeastier on the hindquarters, with a wet blanket of dough, wax, a restatement of banana, and spritely white pepper and clove punctuations. Ends with a modest grassy hop lean, and the everlingering confections of vanilla-chocolate-caramel.
The body is full and fleece-like. Burly and soft and fuzzy. Drinkable in gulps and nothing less.
This is a very nice version.

Sand-camo khaki colored head clouds, while the inhabitants of the dark hell can only look up at the mind numbing cafe au lait heavens, and scream, for they are the lone inhabitants of the sweet abysmal atmosphere known only... Black Wheat.

Just kidding, and trying to crack myself up.

This looks just like a nice stout. Dark black, with a light tan head. The pour revealed more of a deep red, cloudy pour. But looks black in the glass.

Banana and clove mingle like the easter ham mixed with some sort of banana desert your grandma might serve you. Only, it's in a good way. Like you're starving. And this will save you.

Delicious. Strong banana/clove featured here as well. Cinnamon. Roasted barley, dark bitter chocolate, some good sweetness too though. Shit, I'm just reading the bottle, and it mentions wheat, oats, and rye in here also! Now I see where that fucking epic head came from. Just a delicious beer.

Chewy. Full body. Good.

Of all the beers I love (and there are better than this) this beer I hold over all the others. It blew my mind the first time I tried it at the brewery, and blows it still. I just wish it was a year round offering, but there is something very satisfying in waiting for the sequel.

New Glarus' Black Wheat pours a cloudy brown body beneath a full head of creamy dark tan foam that holds quite well but leaves only standard lacing. The nose is quite interesting in its combination of sweet cocoa, dark chocolate, banana bread, and bubble-gum. It's medium-light bodied; and its efferevescent carbonation is at first prickly, and then airy as it warms in the mouth before fading smoothly away. The flavor is even more complex than the aroma suggests, and there are emerging notes of roasted malts, clove, generic "spice", carmel, and even a touch of what could be perceived as smoke. It finishes with a flourish of banana that fades to toasty and chocolate notes as its bitterness rises, and then lingers dryly with some residual clove and spice. Wow! A really interesting, flavorful, and complex beer that holds your interest!

Thanks to Beerwolf77 for this one. Procurer of obscure Midwestern beers!! Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a Harpoon Pilsner glass.

A: Gentle pour yields a monstrous powdery 4 finger light grayish-brown head with moderate retention. Beer is a surprising, opaque black. Lacing is spotty and with poor cling.

S: Nose is roasted malt, toffee, caramel, and brown sugar. Sweet overall and just a bit tart in the back. Subtle but tickles the nose.

T: Opens roasted malt and caramel. Toffee in the back gives this one a warming sensation. Subtly sour in the middle with some brown sugar. Sweetens towards the end. Liquorice and brownie. Finish is cocoa and aftertaste is sweet.

M: Light to medium bodied, decently carbonated and lively and prickly on the tongue and palate. Goes down rather warmly. Finishes messy with an aftertaste that doesn't linger.

D: A moderately complex brew that's very very easy to drink. Light bodied and robust flavor. Would make a terrific session beer as the Fall turns into winter. Possesses a warming quality and one could nurse a couple of bottles all night long.

the long-awaited black wheat - snagged a sixer from Steve's i think

appearance: served in a great dane imperial pint, big froth cola-cap that one needs to be careful of if pouring quickly...once it settles a lovely dark mahogany body and a creamy tan lace remain, with solid retention, tones of garnet

smell: earthy peat-like aroma, a touch of smoke, quite roasty, char, tobacco and leather...nice

taste: nice refreshing dunkel - dark cherry touched with chocolate, cola, coffee, smoke/char, clove spiked wheat mixed with dark roasted malt. I enjoy this, but crack'd wheat will probably see a little more fridge-time

mouthfeel: great carbonation, very smooth

drinkability: high

I acquired a six-pack of this excellent brew in a trade with natasharai, and now I'm going to need more of it every time it's released!

Appearance: Black Wheat pours an opaque dark, dark brown, bordering on black. I've had a handful of beers that pour darker (Dark Lord, Storm King, and other Russian Imperial Stouts), but this stuff is pretty dark. Robust carbonation yields a four-finger, light khaki head in my 22-ounce weizen glass -- it's a good thing I opted for a glass with this much extra room! After a few minutes, the head settles into a nice half-finger cap that remains throughout drinking. Lacing is a bit on the "soapy" side, but it's there.

Smell: Inviting. I pick up roasted caramel and oatmeal aromas, in addition to a hefty dose of familiar German hefeweizen yeast. The wheat's in there, too, but the predominant aromas are roasty and yeasty. Given that hefeweizens, weizenbocks, stouts, and doppelbocks are my favorite styles, this beer smells like a blend of a lot of my favorite things! My only complaint is that the smell is rather subdued, congruent with the mouthfeel (see below).

Taste: JACKPOT! This stuff is what dreams are made of for a guy like me. All my favorite aspects of stouts (roasty/chocolatey goodness), wheat beers (yeast and wheaty sweetness), and doppelbocks (cracker-like, dry maltiness) are on full display in this masterpiece. It shares several of these features with black lagers, a style I also enjoy. It's got the light, refreshing qualities of a hefeweizen, backed by the dry, roasted, malty vigor of a solid stout or doppelbock. I should note that oats are part of the grain bill on this beer, and that flavor certainly comes through nicely -- I taste prominent echoes of Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout, which I love. Outstanding!

Mouthfeel: This is the most/only disappointing aspect of Black Wheat. With all those strong and fulfilling flavors, I'd expect a much fuller body, with some creaminess to sustain the beer as I sip it. Unfortunately, behind the initial prickle of hefeweizen-style carbonation, the beer is rather watery and empty in the mouth. If New Glarus could just boost this beer's body and perceived volume, it would be nearly perfect.

Drinkability: At 5.7% ABV, Black Wheat doesn't hit very hard, which is just fine. It's like drinking a super-extra-ultra-dunkel hefeweizen, or a weizenbock without the extra alcohol. I could put away three or four of these in a session, which is an interesting thought: this is certainly a sessionable beer, belied by its ample roastiness and overall "oomph." It manages to be refreshing, mildly warming, cozy, and relatively light, all at once. Great stuff.

Very dark, almost black and opaque when held to my lamp. It poured one of the best heads I have seen in a beer and the foam rose quite a bit above the rim of my glass. The head lasted quite a long time as well.

The beer reminiscent of chocolate covered bananas, with a slight spice to it. The chocolate plays very well with the banana ester. There is a slight roasty hint to this beer as well. Some traditional wheat beer aroma will be recognized by anyone who has had a weisse beer in their day.

Rich and malty, with the play between chocolate and banana. Some toffee-like sweetness in the front end, there is just a slight tap of spice on the tongue from the rye, and a mild faint roast in the tail. The beer is not overly sweet, but there is a malty sweetness that lingers for quite a while after the finish. The hops flavor is very low, and for me is hard to pin down. I don't think that the hops were supposed to be showcased in this beer anyway. This is the single most perfect beer for a spring day, or warmer evening by the fire.

This is a very top notch release from New Glarus again. I can honestly say that I had to slow down when drinking this beer in order to review it. I found myself drinking it so fast I was almost out (and I only have 1 bottle at the moment) and not able to save enough for a review. The chocolate is light and so nice with slight banana

Dark brown hazy brew with a large foamy tan head, hold sits own, little lacing.

Rich roasted malty aromas along with pronounced clove spiciness, delicious nose. Crisp tart and fizzy mouthfeel works perfectly to convey this tart fresh yet richer style of wheat beer. New Glarus nails yet another style with a wonderful brew. NG makes me want to move to Wisconsin...

S: Apple skins, bubblegum & peppery rye??

T: Roasty malt, orchard fruit, a touch of licorice & booze notes up front. Wet charred grain, a touch of smokeyness, dryness & pear are all there as this warms. Finishes fruitty & dry with a touch of booze

MF: Medium bodied with low carbonation

Drinks fairly easy, not bad, but not as good as I hoped...

22 oz bottle into a Weizen glass.

Pours a deep murky brown, and makes good use of the volume of this glass, with several huge fingers of foamy light tan head. Despite the huge head, this eventually peters down into just a small layer of wispy foam, leaving back a smattering of lace. Not quite as robust looking as the original pour I must say. The aroma is toasty smelling, with roast, caramel, cocoa powder, and some fruity accents of oranges and yeasty banana. Notes of clove and cinnamon give this a spicy pop in the nose.

The taste is once again more dark feeling, with roasty accents of chocolate and caramel, but I'm also getting that familiar sense of smooth sweet wheat character as well. A bloom of bananas flavor stretches in to the finish, along with lingering notes of roast. That same festive mix of spices from the aroma is present as well, really jazzing the taste up here, and seeming to be much more prominent that what I would find in a regular Dunkel. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with an extremely mellow and creamy feel to the carbonation. There appears to be a beefier feel to the body, but damn, this goes down smooth!

Really interesting take on the Dunkleweizen style. Much more roasty and spicy than what I expected, these dimensions meshed well with the already tasty chocolate banana bread character this had going on. Nice stuff!

Originally reviewed September 12, 2005. 12 Oz Bottle. Pours the deepest, murkiest orange-fringed brown that I’ve ever seen a lager pour. Topped gloriously with a noble diminishing root-beer head of chocolate white. Aroma is a SUPER lemon blast, over hexane and a hint of clove. A background of running yeast. Wow, blast of coffee and dry choco powder. Not expected. Morphs into a typically fruity run. These characters are all well balanced and sweet, with a touch of hops finish. Extremely interesting, drinkable, and not overwhelmed by any one characteristic. Hard to describe. Amazing.

This offering from New Glarus Poured a dark cola brown with a huge pillowy tan head.

The smell was a strange mixture of funky sour yeast and a bit of molasses sweetness.

The flavor follows the smell with a funky sweet and sour taste mixing in with hints of coffee and chocolate. I am struggling to get past the weird sourness in the flavor.

The mouthfeel is very light with a bit of oilyness.

Overall a bit on the poor side.

The appearance is quite impressive and was a good start to an enjoyable beer. The body is a very dark brown that allows just a little glimpse of light to pass through the edges. The head is three fingers thick and soft with a light tan hue.

Toasted caramel sweetness of malt makes up the nose and it's followed quickly by a light clove spice. I also picked up a brief whiff of root beer.

There's a lot more going on in the taste than I expected and I found quite a bit of different qualities in there. First and foremost, the roasted chocolate and toasty malts are the centerpiece. After the swallow this starts to develop a profile of a hefeweizen with a light banana and clove presence. There's also a yeast presence. It really tastes like a combination of a stout and hefe and this gives it a fun little twist.

I can really pick up the oats in the mouthfeel. It adds the right amount of thickness to what would normally be a lighter body. The carbonation is slightly heavy. Finish is dry with a burnt malt aftertaste.

This drinks heavier than a 5.7% abv, but the flavor is intriguing and I went through this one pretty fast because I kept wanting another sip.

Looking forward to trying this beer for some time.

Pours a very dark brown, almost black color, with a very large tan head that fills my weizen glass to the top. Rings of lacing is left on the glass during consumption. The aroma consists of banana, cloves, and a bready malt aroma. Mild spice flavor with some yeast esters. The malt does not give up much flavor. Just some cracker like qualities. On the dry side overall. A light body, a bit thin, but nice carbonation. I was a bit disappointed in this beer. A nice drinker and worth a try as dunkelweizens are not that common. Just could not live up to my expectations.

A nice thick chewy Dunkle. Impressive head atop a very dark walnut brown cloudy brew. Decent retention fades to nothing. Nice bits of lace here and there. Pretty bubbly in the glass.

Smell has dark fruitiness, overripe banana, and coffee. Cloves with a burnt sugary sweetness and dark wheat malt. The rye pokes through as well. Smoke.

Taste is full of raisins, banana and a lot of charcoal smoked coffee. Caramelish sweetness flowing through. This beer has a deeply roasted flavor that is accentuated by the rye in the mix. Finish is clean with a firm bitterness and sour apple and wheat twang. Roasted grains and graham linger with more coffee. A slight warming touch. Feel is thick and chewy for this style. A nice active carbonation breaks it up and keeps it refreshing and satisfying.

Quite drinkable. A good fall quaffer for after the yard work.

I really like what NG does with wheat beers. All have great and artfully done malts and their yeast strains are top notch. A primo wheat brewery!
