Pours black with a thick frothy tan head that steadily dissipates leaving a ring of tan foam along the outside of the beer. Nice looking porter - nothing outstanding, just a solid well done appearance.

Smell has notes of roasted malts, chocolate, cocoa, with a touch of smoke and wood chips on the back of the aroma. Smoke is definitely there, but its more mellow and doesn't really smack you in the face with it. Its nicely balanced. Personally I prefer the balance. But if you are looking for a really smoke(y) forward beer - this will likely disappoint.

Taste is what you would expect from the aroma. Nice rich chocolate, cocoa and roasted malts with a touch of lactose like sweetness giving way to a lovely smoke flavor. Touch of wood, smoked wood and smoked meats come through. Everything is quite balanced and very complimentary.

Feel is very smooth. Medium carbonation, and a nice medium body appropriate for a porter. Finish is a bit dry.

Overall this a really well done smoked porter - a beer to sip on a cold night by an open fire. Love the balance on this - although some smoked beer aficionados may be disappointed that it isn't more smokey.

Pours a dark cola brown body, one finger thick dark mocha head, good retention, thin lacing, bits of lacing. Not a whole lot. Smells of a fair bit of heavy campfire smoke, sweet milk chocolate, a bit of bitter cocoa. Even a bit of cola sweetness. A mix of sweet and tobacco. Flavour is a sweet milk chocolate, bitter cocoa, toffee sweetness, switched up with a fair bit of smoke and a deep, earthy and herbal bitterness. It's almost metallic, though this gets more interesting as it warms up. More of the smoke and sweetness intermingles, and it becomes a bit more interesting. The smoke is more of a dense, cigar-heavy smokiness that yet lingers only for a short while, making you want to take another sip to bring it back for further consideration. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, lighter carbonation, a slight dark fruit slickness followed by a bitter herbal, hoppy finish. As far as smoked porters go, this is a fairly interesting beer and I think this works well enough in terms of the balance of the smoke and the sweet chocolate goes. The smoke is reasonably strong, but it doesn't squat and sit on your tongue for too long. I enjoyed this one a fair bit more than Stone's rendition.

This marks my 47th beer from New Glarus that I've rated. Not a milestone like 50, but it is worth reflecting on how a small craft brewer like New Glarus can brew with excellence in the British and German traditions when I find most brewers can brew consistently well in only one. This porter is proof. And it blends both traditions since smoked beers are mostly a German specialty.

I cannot even suggest small ways to improve Smoke On The Porter.
Its aroma promises the smoky, sweet malt delivered in the taste. Its mouth is pleasant...enough bubbles to let the interesting tastes come out (instead of how sometimes other brewers use bubbles to cover their flaws.)
My only suggestion is to brew it again... next year if you would please.

12oz bottle poured into a NG glass

A- pours a deep black color with a two-finger creamy khaki colored head that has great retention long after the pour and leaves some lacing behind

S- smells of roasted malt, chocolate, smoked wood, peat & bandaide

T- smoky and roasted malt up front leads into some chocolaty sweetness, followed by vanilla whipping cream and mocha coffee. The finish brings out some smoked wood that gives light flavors of smoked peat and pork, lingers of smoke and chocolate

M- medium body and moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into a creamy silky finish, high drinkability

O- smoke is just the right intensity, super drinkable, wish i had more than one

Poured into snifter. It is dark coffee brown with a 2 finger dark tan head. Good retention with a thin collar and minimal lacing. Aroma is campfire smoke, char, along with the wonderful chocolate cola porter. The smoke is not overpowering as it only adds to this beer. Flavor is classic porter with some chocolate and cola. There is a hint of char and earthiness, but does not detract from the base. Feel is medium with a slight butteryness. This beer is made for late summer and fall camping.

Pours very dark brown with a solid tan head. Nice thick lacing left behind. Aroma of peat, some astringent industrial cleaner smell, toasted malt. Peat is dominant flavor here, and as someone who avoids those types of scotches, not really doing it for me. Mouthfeel is clean, smooth, and rich without being overpowering. A good pickup if peat and moss are your thing.

When Dan sets out to out perform the Germans, you know he's gonna hit that right out of the mix some metaphors. A Rauchbier that hits it right on. A dark pour, almost black, with a dark tan head fades away to a light skim. Aroma is a little like peat fire in an Irsh pub. Taste is dry, not heavy and sweet, and the smoked malted barley has no off or artificial notes. ABV is not given, but the light, smooth finish indicates it's at the low end of the range. Some of their Thumbprint series have been not our style. Smoke on the Porter is right in the wheelhouse. Get some before it's gone.
