This beer, with it's low abv and non-barrel characteristics, achieves what many of these BIG, MASSIVE, HIGH ABV beers do not. Subtlety. Only with patience can you taste the complexity that this beer has to offer. Dark fruits, caramel, coffee are amongst many other things going on in this beer. I just drank a 6 month old bottle and it tastes even better than the fresh ones. Drink it at room temperature and give it time. It certainly won't explode in your mouth (and if that's what you're looking for, this beer is not for you) but it will slowly massage your taste buds until your mouth is nice and relaxed...and happy.

Pours a clear reddish-brown with a tan head.
Aroma is toffee, dark fruit, a bit of grain and a touch of fig.
Taste is caramel and dark fruit with some biscuit and slight bitter finish.
Mouthfeel is light to medium and well carbonated with a very clean finish.

L- Pours a murky, reddish brown with a thin, tan head.
S- carmel and dark cherry and other dark fruit.
T- Dark fruit and malt with some coffee notes sneaking in. Finishes with some good Belgian yeast. Some chocolate notes drift from the light coffee. I like.
F- Very smooth.
O- Interesting bock with great fruit and roasty tastes.

Poured 12oz bottle into a tulip. It has a muddy red/brown color with a 1.5 finger tan head and leaves some spotty lacing on my glass. The aroma offers up a nice bready malt with some caramel, toffee, chocolate and cola. The flavor leads with the soft caramel sweetness from the nose, as well as some chocolate nutty notes, sweet bread, and well as toffee and malted milk. The mouthfeel is silky and full, with very little carbonation. Overall this was a very nice beer, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

If this was about 15 years ago would have rated all 5's. My father was always big into New Glarus forever so this was one of my first "craft" beer experiences ever. Remember drinking it around a campfire and just tasting so dang good. Had not seen it for a long time till recently so naturally had to pick some up. Overall it is still a good solid beer, just not quite as good as i remember. Very malty flavor as would be expected just does not quite stand up to other German counterparts I have had. Regardless still a great nostalgia beer for me and still tastes way better than 99% of what I drank in high school and college.

Appearance - The beer was a murky dark brown color with a light tan head.

Smell - The light malty booze sets the nose.

Taste - The initial taste is roasty malts. The roastiness is a step below coffee. There is a dark fruit presnce in the back. The taste is strong throughout.

Mouthfeel - The beer is smooth with muted carbonation.

Overall - This is a fantastic example of the style. It is almost bold enough to be a dopplebock.

Dark mahogany brown with a 3 finger hazelnut colored head. 80% opaque.

Some real serious cheap lager smells going on here, with corn, carafe malts, dry grains, and coffee.

Deep, dark coffee flavors, with roast malts, molasses, syrup, and some spoiled bright fruity notes - perhaps old plum, moldy orange, perhaps some cottage cheese here. It's decent, but at the same time goosebump-inducing.

Feel is carbonated and semi-dry. Some tongue scraping action going on.

Overall, one of the shabbier beers I've had from NG. It's okay, but nothing extravagant.

A very dark pour for a bock, almost brown ale territory. Definitely let this one warm up to release the smell and taste. Cold, it is subdued and just average. A nice roasted malt comes through and very light hops. An uncomplicated, but well crafted beer.

Pours medium to dark brown with some reddishness. Reasonable head that dissipates quickly. Nice aroma with good malt overtones. Low carbonation visible but has a distinct bite upon taste. Some good malts come through. Low on hops (Hurray !!!). This is a much better bock that the old Back 40 from New Glarus. Although I tend to prefer the heartier flavor of doppelbocks, this is one of the best bocks I've tried in quite some time. Well done !

12 oz. bottle, my first Oktoberfest of the year (can I call it that, or do I have to say bock?) As Hans Gruber once said, “Macht schnell!”

Pours like a deep amber ale, smell is light malts & caramel. Quiet; I have yet to encounter the bock that blew my nose .

Uff Da is a super-sized Fest beer that‘s begging for a Michael Moore expose. Sweet malts, tangy caramel, chocolate milk, light nuts, a bit of grain from around Mankato. Taste belies the bigger alcohol content, this could get you a DWI in a hurry. Bock lightly.

Good stuff.

Pours a ruddy brown color with a tun khaki head. Head dissipates down to a thin ring of foam along the outside of the beer and some tan slick on top of the beer.

Smell is incredibly bready - just straight up liquid bread. Rich roasted and nutty malts come through.

Taste has notes of nuts, bread and a nice roasted malt taste. Not much in the way of hops flavor coming through although the beer is balanced. Bit of sweetness, but not overwhelming. The flavor is very rustic and earthy.

Feel is a bit thin even for a bock. Medium tingly carbonation. Dry finish.

Overall a really nice bock. Nothing crazy, but its a well crafted beer.

Sweet, toasted, nutty caramel malt dominates the aroma, with hint of floral hops.

Flavor is similar, with a touch of acidity lingering in the aftertaste. Well crafted, albeit a bit sweet.

Enjoyed at 48F as recommended by the brewery. It's roasty, malty, very mild (no ABV on the bottle, but tastes lower than 6.7%). A really good bock and great fall beer for Wisconsin.

Nice, mild fall beer. Hints of chocolate and roast grain. More carbonated than most fall brews which adds to the relative mildness. This beer offends in no ways, but also there nothing really going on that is going to make you thirst for another one.

This beer pours a pleasing brown color. There isn't a lot of head, but what there is frothy. The nose has a pleasing smell to it - almost like a barrel smell to it to me. I also get a slight hint of chocolate in the nose. The first sip, I'm taking as it's still cold, has a faint hint of chocolate to it. The second sip , a few minutes later, has even more richness to it - more of the chocolate flavor to it. I have a feeling, as it warms up, the flavor will come out even more. A delicious offering from NG, and would gladly buy again.

One of those darker appearance bocks. This one is brown. Has a roasty nose.

Taste then comes across slightly sweet, brown malt, lager yeast. More bitter than average, could be the carbonation too though. Some caramel and toffee, the body is relatively easy going and carries a bit of flavor. Lots of dark breadiness going on.

Having had 20 more beers from New Glarus than my #2 favorite brewery, I will understate the case and say: I'm a big fan. This Bock is one big reason why.
Mahogany, sweet, balanced with a bittersweet finish. Big, but without lots of alcohol. Delicate and hefty at once. Masterful.
The only way New Glarus can improve Uff-da is to make it every year.

Listed on the "1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die," Uff-da deserves it. Randy Mosher, famous Chicago-based beer author, teacher and entrepreneur, wrote an excellent review; maybe one of the book's Top Ten...and I've read/drank half.

"Uff-da" has many derivations and meanings in the Scandinavian languages; but, basically, it is an expletive suitable for uttering after two feet of snow fell and, now, must be moved. It is unfortunately fitting that I Had this last Uff-da after the returns rolled in from Wisconsin on Election night 2016.

L: Pours brilliant amber brown under a 1” light tan foam collar.
S: Rich malt, a little roast leaning towards coffee
T: Rich malts, a little too much roast, malt sweetness medium, not really complex, the base malt is rich, a lot of flavors but the malt is not as complex as it could be. Low hops, lingering sweetness, caramel and roast.
F: medium to medium full body, moderate to moderately low carbonation

Bottle date 2633. Poured into a snifter.

I loved how unique this beer was.

Great carbination, poured a deep maroon color with a finger of white head. Lots of lacing.

A very sweet bock with hints of cherry in the smell and taste. Slight chocolate notes as well.

I hope they bring this back for fall so I can try it fresh.

12 oz bottle poured into a New Glarus pilsner glass.
No date or info.

A - Heavy carbonation streams through this beautifully clear copper-colored brew, feeding it's lasting ivory head that shrouds the glass in heavy lace. Uff-da is picture perfect!

S - Hearty maltiness offers rich aromatics of baked bread and nuttiness followed by dry toast and a slathering of sweet caramel

T - Chewy caramel cubes offer sweetness through this densely malty brew that leaves heavenly baked bread and toasted wheat and nut bread lingering on the tongue despite it's otherwise clean lagered characteristic.

M - Even though the beer's heavy carbonation is seen streaming through the glass, Uff-da is ultra-smooth; almost creamy in texture, which goes perfectly with it's fuller body and clean finish that leaves light malt traces on the tongue.

O - New Glarus' Dan Carey is a brewing genius, especially when it comes to German style beer, which is no surprise considering his time spent across the pond. Uff-da is a pretty simple bock overall but it's lack of defect and flourishing bready and nutty malt profile make it damn delicious. This beer is one of the best examples of the style you can lay lips on.

A- Medium to light brown transparent. Medium lacing with thin layer of head, vanilla in color.

S- Nice roasty malt backbone, with nutty smell to it. Not overpowering, but def present.

T- Follows the nose with malt backbone forefront, and nutty tones in the back.

M- Kinda watery, but I wouldn't want too thick of a bock, this is about right.

O- I am not too familiar with the style, but here is my two cents.

12 fl oz brown glass bottle with iconic green/gold branded pry-off pressure cap and generally appealing label design acquired in a trade with the very gracious Duff27 and served into a Spaten stangenglas in me gaff in low altitude Austin, Texas. I'm really excited for this one; New Glarus is easily in my top 10 breweries (thanks in large part to Duff27's trades over the years). Reviewed live, as a bock (because the label clearly identifies it as such). No ABV is listed on the bottle.

Served cold - straight from the fridge - and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Pours a pretty standard bock head - one finger in width. It's white-khaki in colour and of decent thickness. Little creaminess. Not particularly frothy or healthy looking. Complexion and consistency could be better. Head retention is above average - about 3-4 minutes. No lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

Body colour is a rich transparent translucent auburn that has a nice glow to it when backlit, but isn't horribly vibrant. It's a clean appearance: no yeasty sediment or floating particles are visible.

Overall, it's not a great appearance for a bock (or a beer in general), but there are no egregious flaws and it's above average I suppose. Not a unique or special appearance by any means, but I'm optimistic.

Sm: Rich bock malts are abundant in the aroma. It's got a strong (and seemingly sweet) malty backbone. Brown bread crust/bready malts. A dash of caramel. Buried hints of dark fruit (plum I guess?), toffee, and chocolate. It's a plump appealing aroma of mild strength, but I do worry about the obvious sweetness - which may be too much.

There's no overt hop profile to speak of, no is there any detectable yeast character. While true to style, it doesn't have the general character of a German yeast.

The fruity notes develop as the beer comes to temperature. I haven't had many bocks with this fruity an aroma; I'm intrigued.

No alcohol or other off-notes are noticeable.

T: Has a prominent though well-rounded malty sweetness, with notes of bread crust, caramel, brown malts, and some amber malts. The hops offer no contest to the malts here, but as sweet as the beer is I don't find it too imbalanced. The fruitiness is just as powerful (for a bock) here as it was on the aroma; I pick up plum mainly, seconded by some fleeting cherry notes. There's also a light, subtle maple tone. The chocolate found in the aroma is nowhere to be had here, which may actually be a good thing.

It's got above average complexity for a bock, but isn't real subtle or intricate. The fruit lends it some nuance; it's not the same build as most other beers in the style. Above average depth of flavour. Average duration and intensity of flavour.

No yeast character or alcohol comes through in the taste. None of the coffee mentioned on the label is coming through for me.

Mf: Filling and medium-bodied, with an apt weight and presence on the palate given the style. It's smooth, wet, and very approachable. A bit overcarbonated, perhaps, but the texture complements the taste well - mostly by staying out of the way and sticking to simplicity. It isn't the meal-in-a-glass of many bocks.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, harsh, astringent, or rough.

Dr: Absolutely a downable drinkable bock if I've ever had one. But it's not as successful a take on a traditional style as New Glarus' many superior beers. It's an inspired take on a bock, but it just doesn't come together as well as most of New Glarus' lineup. Still, it's one of the better bocks I've tried in recent memory, and may well be amongst the best American bocks I've had. I'm glad I got to try it. If I was lucky enough to just come across it on the shelf at a bottle shop, I'd happily pick up a six pack of it to try again.

Likable but far from a stylistic paragon.
