12oz bottle with no date into plastic cup

Look is a very dark brown with some amber hue around the edges. Small khaki head fades to a ring. Smell is roasted malts, black coffee, and some earthy hops. Taste is more of the same: dark roasty malts, some wet mossy hops, and a blast of iced coffee. Feel is only slightly heavier than your average porter. Still, quite silky.

The best coffee stout I've ever had, should be a year-round brew. Now I need to speed back to Wisco and pick up a couple more six-packs.

2012 vintage, served cellar temp in a Duvel tulip

A - pours a dark brown with a large amount of dark brown head, fades to leave a good amount of lacing

S - very nice amount of coffee and malt, not overpowering at all, a small amount of chocolate at the end.

T - coffee, chocolate, malt up front, great balance of these flavors with a little bit of hops to finish

M - incredibly smooth, a little bit of bitterness in the very end

O - I've been waiting for this one to come back, and I'm glad it's here. This is a great example of a coffee stout, incredible balance and feel. Will definitely stock up on this one, especially at this price point.

Thanks to gratefulbeerhead for this bottle. Cheers Eric!

Pours a very deep brown, nearly black. Slight bits of yeast sediment can be seen floating about. Two finger malted milk colored head. Retention is pretty decent. Heavy lacing left blanketing the side of the tulip.

Java certainly comes through in the nose though not a strong as I had hoped. Chocolate and roasted malt sneak past the bean and make it to the nose.

Chocolate and coffee flavors are immediately picked up on the tongue. To be quite honest the chocolate comes through a bit stronger. Moderate roasted grain contributes a slight bitterness, when combined with the coffee the overall bitterness is moderate but pleasant. Caramel flavors open up midpalate which transition to a creamy sweetness toward the back. A lingers coffee bitterness is left clinging to the back of the palate.

Medium bodied brew with lively carbonation. I typically like my stouts to have a bit more body but that is just my preference. Texture is very smooth. Finish is moderate, flavors linger on the tongue but not for too long.

Very solid beer, certainly sessionable. Although the java flavors are not quite intense enough to simply be called "Coffee Stout", it is quite a tasty beer.

Pours a deep brown color with a moderate mocha head that quickly dissipates leaving little lacing. Aroma features strong coffee notes, with hints of chocolate and molasses underneath. Taste begins with the bitterness of the coffee, and finishes with a subtley sweet note of molasses. Slightly tart as a whole.

Pours black with a medium-sized, very carbonated head. Lacing starts as the head dies, but disappears quickly.

Aroma has tell-tale chocolate smell, but there is something else odd in there. Another reviewer says corn, but for me it's like fake cookies.

Flavor seems pretty rote. Typical attempt at chocolate and coffee flavors that leave a powdered cocoa aftertaste. There is also a milk stout lactose flavor and feel.

Mouthfeel is thin and watery. Quite disappointing.

Drinkability is fine, but it's only average. This was only expounded by having it side by side with Lake Louie's Mr. Mephisto. Bring back Road Slush!

This stout was dark brown and not black which surprised me. It had a faint "stouty" smell to it but no coffee that I can detect. Taste was also standard stout but no coffee. My friend said he could taste it so maybe my palate is deficient. In any case, this was a good stout but didn't live up to the label for me.

A: pours almost black with a thick head that is still hanging on at the end.

S: the only smells i got were roasted coffee and alcohol... sometimes its nice to have it just smell like what its supposed to. i find i'm not missing any of the vanilla or chocolate that usually comes with coffee brews.

T: what can i say, its pretty much the same as the smell. it really is just straight up nice to have a coffee brew that just tastes like coffee.

M: its a bit high on the carbonation but that does not bother me and its a little on the thin side but im not seeing those as complaints because it still all works for me. nicely rounded out.

D: because it actually does taste like very good coffee i can't say i'd want more than 2 or 3 of these in a sitting but i think i could drink that many every day. i wish i had more of them.
