Pours a very large head, close to three fingers, deep tan to lighter brown , good density as well as retention, likewise has pleasing breadth and length in the lacing, very sticky. The liquid has a filminess which serves as opacity, not the pitch black night many stouts can be, hint of yellow at the edges where you can see a swirl of pinprick bubbles sizzle upwards. Very steady but not insufferably thick nose of cocoa powder, caramel, American roast coffee and charcoal to campfire accents, there’s also a strong lactose to vanilla edge, light plum and dark fruits, nothing comes close to the general roast for effect. Remarkably lighter bodied, results in a fluid mouth feel and soft, fresh finish. The carbonation provides a consistent caress rather than prickle. The chocolate, whipped cream and coffee are all sweet in a powdery fashion, flavorful without overindulgence. As in the nose, minimal fruit presence. Slightly grainy at the end, not quite bready nor yeasty. Freshness and drinkability among its strongest attributes although this is not to say it is a weakling.

Nothing tends to the remarkable but it still packs a ton of coffee flavor. Light chocolate malts, roasted coffee, burnt coffee grounds, light lactose cream and a tinge of hop bitterness.

A- Pours a small, tan head. Not soapy. Color is very dark - looks like coffee. Characteristic of the style.

S- Smells of rich malt. Dark fruits are there. A little cocoa. Coffee, too, but not overly pronounced.

T- Strong coffee presence up front. Fades to dark fruits and then another wave of coffee on the aftertaste. Complex for the style. Getting some dark chocolate there as well as I move through it.

M- Fairly wet. Full-bodied. Light carbonation. Like others of the style here.

O- Pretty good. Definitely would be a better option for colder weather, but I knew that before I tried it. Better than others of its style. Doesn't blow me away like some of the offerings at New Glarus, but it is solid. I'd recommend it.

Bottled given as an extra by Tony/Anthony -- thanks again.

Pours pretty much black with some red tinges around the bottom of the glass. Nothing but a ring of head, with no lacing left behind. Looks the part of a stout -- black.

This smells of roasted malt and some dark fruits. There's a milky sweetness in there, too. Coffee? Not at all, really. I'm not sure why this is called a coffee stout, at least if the aroma is any indication... to me, this smells more like a porter. This lacks the bolder notes I associate with stouts.

Exactly like the aroma, I'd say: roasted malt, and a nice balance of dark fruit flavors. Again, there's a milky sweetness... the bottle doesn't say there's lactose in this, but it really tastes like it. It just has that milky sort of sweet flavor that I get in many beers that have lactose. The feel is also porter-esque. There's a nice bit of heft to it for the ABV that I'd expect from stouts, but there's actually a bit of a strong prickling carbonation that's a trademark of porters (at least in my experience. I know many people think stouts=porters).

So, this is a fairly interesting beer. In terms of being a coffee stout, that's a bummer. There's no coffee specifically that I'm tasting in this -- I suppose if I pretend that the roast tastes like it, sure, but it doesn't taste like it's brewed with any. Also, this drinks like a porter. By that I mean the flavors aren't as bold as I expect from a stout, and the carbonation is a bit high.

As a coffee stout, this is a relatively poor beer. As a regular stout, it's a decent beer. As a porter, it's a very respectable beer. My rating reflects how I think it tastes, more than what I think the style should be. Most definitely the weakest New Glarus beer I've had, but an enjoyable one nonetheless.

Pours a blackish brown body, tan slightly creamy head. Nose has a charred bread crust aroma, with roasted malt and faint coffee acidity behind it. Taste is more roasted malt, burnt chocolate, floral hops, a bit of coffee. Dry. Body is light-medium, somewhat over-carbonated.
Lacks body and coffee, the stout notes were on the more mild side of things although their flavors were good, just not especially deep. Yahhhh.... naw.
