No surprise, considering this is a New Glarus beer, but the cherry is not subtle. It's not bad either. It's a candied cherry flavor with a lightly tart edge that's big enough to dominate the dark roast, but the flavor comes out like a chocolate-covered cherry. Tasty beer, but I probably wouldn't have more than two.

Pouring hazy garnet but filling to opaque prune juice hues of purplish-brown, this beer has a large khaki foam head that settles to a bubbly film and thick collar leaving tons of camouflage lace.

Smell is dark toast and dark, roasty malt, almost coffee-like, while simultaneously bringing cinnamon and brown sugar-spiced, mashed and softened cherry jam, almost like mincemeat.

Again I get a mincemeat type flavor, but not in a bad way at all. Spiced and sugared figgy cherry tartness, but not sour somehow, someway...wow. Cherry jam. Dark toast and nuts. Less roasty in flavor than in smell, though.

Medium-thin body with a crisp, thin froth and a perfectly, semi-dry finish.

If you're going to do a fruit stout, this is the way to do it. No tiny hint of fruit, or flavoring extract that comes across as cough syrup. This is all fresh fruit first, stout second. Very interesting and tasty.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall New Glarus Signature glass. 2017 Batch.

Appearance: Pours blackish brown. Moderate amount of bubbles and a solid finger of tan head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A fruity and roasty aroma with a scent of cherries, chocolate, and oak. Upfront scent of cherry juice. Hints of oak. Dar roasted malt with a scent of chocolate, toast, caramel, biscuit, and grains with some yeast. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a fruity and fairly roasty taste with notes of cherries, chocolate, and oak. Big upfront juicy taste of cherries. Some nice notes of oak barrel. Dark roasted malt with notes of chocolate, caramel, toast, biscuit, and grains along with yeast. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and very smooth.

Overall: Another great fruit beer from New Glarus. Very good cherry flavor with a nice touch of oak and roast.

12oz bottle, 2017 version. Pours transparent amber with a large sized head; good lacing. Smells of tart yeast, lemon, cherry, oak, and hops. The taste follows with tart cherry, lemon, oak, and roasted/bready malt. Some cocoa and spice on the finish. Mild sweetness and tartness. Thin body and higher carbonation. Overall, not sure why this is labeled as a stout when it's basically a BA fruit beer. As a fruit beer through, it's actually pretty good with a lively character.

Ok beer if you don't call it a cherry stout. I wanted a stout that had a cherry taste and instead this is just like their belgian tarts with a hint of dark beer. It's completely backwards IMO. I love New Glarus' beer, but I think calling this a stout is very misleading.

12oz bottle of the 2017 release. Served in a snifter glass. Pours a dark cola brown body, slightly murky with a one finger offwhite head, good retention and lots of lacing. Smell is tart cherry, light roast, touch of tart vinegar and oak, a bit of roasted grain, even a touch of lemon. Flavour is a combination of roast, tart vinegar, slight metallic and red vinous character, bit of oak and cherry flesh. It's an odd flavour, I don't think the metallic part is coming from the cherry but rather the yeast. Mouthfeel is a bit thin bodied, good depth, slight fruity and tart cherry juice on the backend. It's interesting, a nice beer to try but not something that really puts it all together for me here.
